Social Security wage limit in QB Desktop with Enhanced Payroll did not stop taking taxes out after reaching the 2023 limit

Hello,

I have one employee who went over the Social Security maximum income for 2023. According to QuickBooks documentation, the system automatically sets the limit with payroll updates. I always run my payroll update at least once per month. Now I am running my W-2s for 2023 and have errors because this person is over the limit. How do I handle the overage?

Hi there, Elysha.

I want to ensure your issue about social security wage limit gets checked, and I'd like to redirect you to the best support group available to get this addressed right away.

You're right that QuickBooks automatically stop the deduction when you reach the Social Security wage limit. Since it still deducts on your end, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. This way, they can further check on this matter and perform in-depth investigation to verify the deduction.

To reach them, here's how:

  1. On your QuickBooks account, go to the Help menu at the top.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help
  3. Choose Contact Us
  4. Enter the issue or topic in the field box.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions.

You can also check out this link for more information on contacting them: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support. Ensure to review their support hours to know when agents are available.

For future reference, here's a great resource to help you close out your current year and prepare for the new year in QuickBooks with your accountant: Year-end checklist for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

Please touch base with me here for all of your QuickBooks needs, I'm always happy to help. Wishing you all the best.

Social Security wage limit in QB Desktop with Enhanced Payroll did not stop taking taxes out after reaching the 2023 limit

Thank you Miriam.

I did that all yesterday. The person spent an hour helping me. What she tried did not work. At 5:10 she said it was going to take a while. I had to get home. So we ended the call. She was supposed to call me back this morning at 9:00. Nothing.

To follow up, I had to call QBs again. I never received a call back. Luckily this time the person I was connected with knew what she was doing and was able to rectify the problems caused by the QB error. However, what is not resolved is why this happened in the first place. This nice woman verified that the appropriate cutoff number for Social Security is correct in my QBs. She also stayed with me while I filled out form 941-X to receive the extra amount I had already paid to the government refunded to me.
