State w2 excel compile error

Using 2023 Enterprise Solutions.

From the Payroll Center I click the E-file State W2 that has an excel icon beside it.  Have used this since 2018.  When it opens excel is has a compile error in a hidden module.  I spent over an hour with tech support on screen share and they could not get it to work.  On my own I have brute forced it to work.  What I have done to get it to work is from Programs in the Control Panel is i have repaired quickbooks 23 and immediately repaired microsoft office. The problem is this does not always work and i have several company files that i need to use this export wizard to get my data file to upload to my state agency.  Am i the only one having problems.  Also i am using microsoft 365, so i know i have the latest of microsoft and quickbooks.

None of those steps resolve the problem;however, i have discovered a combination of steps that will.

1. Open company file.

2. From employees tab, get payroll updates (update even if current on updates).
3. Go to state e-file state 22. Excel sheer should now work. Note. If you have in the current session been in any payroll tax forms at all you will still get the compile error in excel. Will have to close all forms and payroll center, close company file. Reopen company file. Repeat step 2.

Repairing qbooks and office from control panel will work 50% of the time, but the combo above has been the most successful.

State w2 excel compile error

We didn't expect this error, @2092691. I'll be with you in sorting out this error to ensure you can export your payroll report in Excel.

First off, let's ensure your version of QuickBooks is up-to-date. Here's how:

  1. From the Help menu, select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click Update Now, then click Get Updates.
  3. Close and reopen QuickBooks when it's done.
  4. Select Yes when asked to install the update.
  5. Restart your computer.

Once done, relaunch QuickBooks to see if it makes any difference. If the issue persist, check out this link to guide you in fixing export to Excel issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

Update us here or let us know if you have additional concerns. I'll be there to help again. Take care!

State w2 excel compile error

Thanks for sharing this fix with us.  I had been working on this problem all week, and the "Official" fix from Inuit tech support was "uninstall and reinstall Office" - which I knew was not the proper solution from the beginning, but it was all I had - so I proceeded to do so (with mixed success) on over 30 workstations. This fix has worked on the 10 workstations I tried it on today and takes about 30 seconds per station - so thank you very, very much for giving me back the rest of my weekend!

One note - there is a typo in the above solution - where it says, "Go to state e-file state 22."  It should be, "Go to state e-file state W2."  Most people will likely figure that out on their own, but some may be confused by it, so it seems worth mentioning.

Btw - I'm an IT provider, not an accountant.  That being said - I want to make anyone who ends up on this post aware of another particular threat that the problem could pose.  If your end-users (accountants, or whoever) tried to fix this themselves prior to finding this solution - it is very possible/likely that they will have changed the trust settings for macros to "Enable VBA macros (not recommended; potentially dangerous code can run)" - which is definitely NOT a state you want to leave those workstations in.  Macros without notification can be a huge security risk and should not be allowed to run in that manner.  So if you're responsible for taking care of workstations that dealt with this issue, be sure to check that setting and get it back to "Disable VBA macros with notificiation."  I know it's a nuisance to have to click "Allow Content" every time, but it's worth it to mitigate the potential security risks.

Hope this helps.  Be sure to drop a like for the OP for being kind enough to share.

Thank you so much for this simple solution. It worked for me.

A week ago, the State W2 process worked fine but this week I haven't been able to get it to work in any of my files. So frustrating to have issues like this in January! Now I'll have to go back and make sure my macro settings are correct.
