Attempted to run client ready payroll reports in QB Desktop 2020. Only the first tab pulls up. No box to select reports or tabs, time period ext. Just the one tab with "Please Turn on Macros".
Hi @dso0216,
I'll handle this query for you.
You'll have to toggle macros for Microsoft Office applications to enable them. You need to click the Enable Content button on your MS Excel file that appears when you run the report, so you can proceed and generate it.
I recommend you view this article: Accountant tools: Review list changes. It allows you to see and review all changes made in your items.
If you have other concerns, share them in the comments below, and I'll get back to you.
This has happened again with the latest payroll update. The Enable Macro or Enable Content button is not there like it usually is. It "broke" overnight with the payroll update.
This is not part of the accountant review. It is specific to enhanced payroll for accountants. This has happened again with the latest payroll update. The Enable Macro or Enable Content button is not there like it usually is. It "broke" overnight with the payroll update.
Let's get this working so you can export your reports, LizCPA.
Most of the time, errors when exporting reports to Excel are usually caused by any of the following factors:
I can't also see any posts or open alerts that are related to Client Ready Payroll report after the payroll update. You'll want to repair either Microsoft Excel or QuickBooks to isolate the issue.
You can follow the steps in these articles for more details:
Once done, go back to QuickBooks and check if you can already export the report.
I'd also to leave some some articles in case you need more references with payroll:

It should work
I just installed 2022 QB Desktop Accountant from the 2021 program. I want to know if your solution fixed the problem with the Client Ready Payroll report blocked by not being able to Enable Macros. I've done the Trust Center Settings several times to no avail!
Hello there, ELundy1971. I'm joining this thread to share some information about fixing the payroll report that was being blocked by Macros.
I appreciate you for installing the 2022 version of QuickBooks Desktop Accountant and trying to fix the problem from Trust Center Settings. I would like to know if you've tried the steps below. If not yet, we can do it to solve your current issue with your payroll report. Here's how:
If the issue persists, I'd recommend contacting Microsoft Support for further assistance. They can also guide you thoroughly on how to get this right.
I've gathered some articles about exporting payroll reports to Excel in QuickBooks Desktop. Each link contains information on how to get the correct data from the program to Excel.
Feel free to add another post if you have more concerns about payroll reports and anything related to QuickBooks. Stay safe always.
I can't open a Client Ready Payroll report from the Report - Employees & Payroll without it automatically going to Excel so your solution doesn't work. So what payroll report are you talking about in your message?
This doesn't work. First I click Report then Employees & Payroll then Client Ready Payroll Report. The report automatically goes to Excel and says Macros are Disabled. The cursor doesn't hover the word Macro. So what payroll report are you referring to?
I appreciate you for trying the steps shared by my colleague, ELundy1971.
At this time, I'd suggest reaching out to Microsoft Support so they can guide you on how to enable the Macros.

This didn't work.
I know this hasn't been easy for you, ELundy1971.
I'll share further troubleshooting steps to ensure you can run the Client-Ready Payroll report.
One of the Excel-based reports available in QuickBooks Desktop is the Client-Ready Payroll report. It's possible that you exceeded the limit of 65,536 detail lines that's why you received this error. To fix this, ensure your Excel is a 2015 or 2016 64 bits version. Then, let's run a report such as the create State SUI Efile to enable the macro contents.
Here's how:
If the issue persists, I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Support. They can pull up your account and submit a ticket for further investigation.
Additionally, I've added this article to guide you if you want to personalize reports in QuickBooks Desktop: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.

This fix did not work for me, but it did help tremendously. Thank you so much for identifying the file and location. Rather than deleting/renaming QB_Payroll_Rpt.xlt I just doubled clicked on it while the QuickBooks file was open that I wanted to pull the reports from. The macros worked perfectly! So, I created a shortcut to the file and pasted it to my desktop. It works every time. I just don't have the menu option in QuickBooks. I spent two hours on the phone with QuickBooks support who ended up blaming the issue on Excel. Boo QuickBooks. Get your act together!
I was able to fix this issue by changing my Microsoft Office to the 64-bit version. I had to uninstall Office and download the 64-bit installation file. None of the other suggestions here worked at all. Updating to the 64-bit version of Excel allowed me to print the Client Ready Payroll Reports again.
Colleague and I had the same issue and even after having the latest payroll update downloaded, we both had to Employees>Get Payroll Updates> select radio button "Download entire payroll udpate" and click update button. This enabled us both to get export the Client Ready Payroll Report that we have done for years.
A colleague and I both couldn't export the client ready payroll report after years of doing so with no issues. We had no changes when it suddenly couldn't export. All updates were done, BUT apparently there must be another fix just added.
Employees>Get payroll updates> Click radio button "Download entire payroll update" and click Update.
it now works again.
That still doesn't work for me, I have tried everything, including called QB and Microsoft and both quit on me and sent me here, anybody?
I know this hasn't been an easy process for you, PayrollHR.
Let me make it up to you by making sure you'll get detailed troubleshooting steps to resolve this.
I understand that you've contacted our support team, but I would still recommend reaching out to them again. They have full access to your account and can check how to connect or share the data to QuickBooks. They can also determine its main cause to ensure it won't happen again.

I appreciate your understanding on this matter. Please know that I'm determined to get this resolved.
The same thing with me. Been on and off chat support with QB chat & phone support and also Microsoft. They each say it's the other. I believe QB phone support and I have narrowed it down to it being a problem with Microsoft 365 Excel. I'm able to run the report on older versions of Excel. Anyone else using Microsoft 365?
I did both of those things and it's still not working
Thanks for joining here, @JocelynJohnson. I appreciate you for trying the steps shared in this post.
Have you tried updating your QuickBooks? If not, ensure your version of QuickBooks is up-to-date. Here's how:
Then, reopen QuickBooks to see if it makes any difference.

Yes I did. I have spent all day on the phone with QB and Microsoft. The last call that I just got off of with QB, they are aware that it's an issue on their end with MS 365. He said the back door would be to install Excel locally on my computer and not have it connect with online. I'm in the process of finding out if that is possible with Microsoft 365. If you have an older version of Excel, the reports are working. Not only does this issue concern the Client Ready Reports, but also the upload for SUI and W2's.
This is definitely happening after the update and none of these solutions work.
I do not have office 365 and it's happening to me
