Wages-chart of accounts

Why would the total payroll randomly change to show as a total under Wages on the chart of accounts instead of under each separate account that it was set up in originally and has been in since last August?  This random change happened the week ending January 15th.  No changes were made on our end.

Wages-chart of accounts

Let me help you go over to your account and have your total payroll show on their respective wages account, sandywat.

You might want to check your Accounting Preferences if the default account used was changed. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the upper right corner and choose PayrollSettings.

  2. Go to the Preferences tab and click Accounting Preferences.

  3. From the Wage Expense Accounts, double-check all the accounts used.

If the wages accounts are set up correctly, performing the recommended basic troubleshooting steps will resolve the issue. Let's access your account in incognito mode. You can use any of these keyboard shortcuts to launch a private window on different browsers:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

Once signed in, go back to your chart of accounts and check if it's still showing under one wages account. If it rectifies the problem, clear the browser's cache. Clearing the history or log of sites resolves most issues with the web pages.

However, if the problem persists, either delete and recreate the transactions. and ensure to use the correct wages account or record a journal entry or post them on the right ledger.

Please be reminded that using this method (journal entry) needs the assistance of an accounting professional for the accounts you need to use. Also, your accountant can help and guide you on which account to debit and credit

For your payroll reference, check out this article: Payroll 101. It contains more information about the different types of compensation as well as on what are the types of federal forms you need to file. Also, this will provide you a sample breakdown of a paycheck.

Let me know if you still need help with this or if you ran into a different situation by adding a reply below so I can look further into this. I want to make sure your payroll records are accurate. Have a lovely week.
