Why does self employed intuit force me to enter auto details or mileage? I don't have a car.

Hi there, kevzettler.

I'm glad to see you here in QuickBooks Community. I'll share details about entering auto details or mileage.

Entering or recording mileage information is not necessary especially if you aren't using a car or vehicle. However, the system will prompt you to enter mileage or vehicle details once you're trying to export tax data to Turbotax Self-employed. To stop this, I suggest looking for all the transactions that are categorized under Schedule C: Car and Vehicle. Then, change its categories.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu at the left panel.
  2. Find the transaction you want to edit.
  3. Select the icon to expand the transaction.
  4. Edit the transaction name, add notes or attach a receipt.
  5. To change the category, select the link in the Type or Category column. Then, select a new category.
  6. When you're done, hit Save.

For additional information, you can click this article: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Please refer to this article to see steps on how you can split a single transaction between a business and personal, or into multiple categories: Split transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Feel free to get back here if you have other QuickBooks-related concerns. I'm here if you need further assistance. Have a good one.

hi @ChristieAnn

I am indeed trying to export to turbo tax and getting blocked for mileage info. Per your directions, I cannot find any car and vehicle related transactions to change category. See attached screenshot. I tried other search permutations as well

Hi kevzettler!

Thanks for the reply. Let me show you how to fix this prompt.

I'd like to reiterate what ChristieAnn mentioned. The prompt will trigger if there is/are transaction/s that were categorized as car and truck. You can follow these steps on how to review your transactions:

  1. Go to the Reports menu and select Business and personal expenses.
  2. Set the date and click the View button.
  3. Under the Business expenses section, locate the Car and truck and click the corresponding amount.
  4. You'll see all the transactions with that category. You can edit them from there.
  5. Click on the Save button once you are done.

If you're unsure of how to categorize these transactions, you'll want to seek some help from your accountant.

Each category in QuickBooks Self-Employed matches a line on your Schedule C. Check this link to know when and how to use them: Schedule C and expense categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

If the same thing happens, please don't hesitate to reach out to our QuickBooks Self-Employed Support Team. They can conduct an investigation to see what's causing this behavior.

Hi Alex, I followed your directions and there is no amount listed for car and truck. I even tried dropping the date range back to 2019. see attached screenshot.

I'll point you in the right direction, @kevzettler.

I appreciate you for checking the report and for the prompt reply.

Since there are no amount and transactions categorized under Schedule C: Car and Vehicle, I'd recommend calling our Customer Care Team. They have available tools to investigate why you force to enter mileage details in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu, then click Contact Us
  2. Type your concern in the box and tap Continue.
  3. Choose either Get a callback or Start a chat
  4. Complete the required data and submit the request.

Please call them within business hours to ensure we cater to your concern quickly.

Additionally, I didn't see any attached screenshots of your reply. You may refer to the sample picture on how to append it.

I'd also encourage you to visit these articles underneath about the updated categories names and other relevant matters.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have additional questions about mileage or how the call goes. I'm continuously here to help you. Take care always.

I called support and the agent had to manually delete the vehicle and mileage entries for me. They were not rendering in the self employed quickbooks UI.
