Withheld Oh tax from an IN employee!?!

Hey there, @jasuter.

I'm happy to provide information on the taxes for employees. If your employee lives in one state and works in the other, it is considered multistate. In this case, you would check for reciprocity agreements between the two states. I checked and found that Indiana and Ohio do have an agreement. What this means for the employee and you is that if they work in one state but live in the other, the state that they are working in is the one that collects the state withholding tax.

Example:

The employee works in Ohio but lives in Indiana, then Indiana would be the state to collect the tax.

If your concern is not towards multistate tax and you made a mistake, I recommend checking the employee address that you have on file to ensure that it doesn't have the work address listed. This way, we can make sure that is the root cause of this issue. To edit an employee:

  1. Select Workers > Employees.
  2. Under Action, select Edit.
  3. Edit the information you want to change.
  4. Select Save.

If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to reach back out anytime. Take care, and have a great rest of your day!

Withheld Oh tax from an IN employee!?!

Thanks but this employee works in Indiana and lives in Indiana for over two years. But for one paycheck in Dec. Ohio PIT is w/h. I can't even replicate it paycheck and have Ohio PIT w/h. It's a one time happening that really massed up my w2's for two states and the IRS. Of witch QB's will not help!

Withheld Oh tax from an IN employee!?!

Thanks but the employee lives and works in Indiana. The location is Indiana. Everything is INDIANA. Get the pic? For the past two years its been Indiana. So one check in December there is Ohio PIT w/h and the Indiana PIT is also w/h but at a higher rate. Now that's just a mess up! I tried to replicate the paycheck but can't.

Thank you for coming back here in the Community, @jasuter.

I've already checked if there's an ongoing issue about the location of the employee. However, there is no reported investigation at this time.

To correct the W2's and the location of your employee's in QuickBooks Online, you can follow the step by step instructions below.

If the W2's form is not yet submitted to the IRS, you have an option to delete and recreate the paycheck. Let me guide you how:

  1. Go to the Workers tab, then Employees.
  2. Select Paycheck List under Run Payroll,
  3. Change the date range if necessary, then select the paychecks that needs to delete.
  4. Hit Delete.
  5. Mark the check-mark box to confirm the deletion, then select Delete Paycheck.

Once the paycheck already deleted, you can recreate it. For the detailed guide, check this article: Create paychecks in online payroll.

If ever, you're unable to delete the transaction, I suggest contacting our Payroll support. They have availability to void the paycheck and tools to correct the taxes.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Choose the Help (?), then select Contact Us.
  2. Enter your concern in the box, then click Let's talk.
  3. Choose either Start messaging or Get a callback.
  4. Complete the information needed, then tap Confirm my call or Send a message

However, if the forms are already submitted to the IRS, you can do an amendment outside QuickBooks. You can call the IRS to get the form and visit their website to see the detailed steps on how to amend forms. Refer to this IRS link: https://www.irs.gov/.

If there's anything else I can help you accomplish, or if you have more questions about the product. I'll be happy to assist you further. Have a great rest of your day.
