I am not able to restore a file from a backup. I get the error code 6000-83. File doctor doesn't fix the issue and neither does renaming the file.

I had several other files that were saved on the same USB drive and didn't have any issues. I had just upgraded from 2019 to 2020 version of Desktop Pro.

I've got your back, @francie7463.

Let's take a look at a couple of solutions to get this error resolved and get you back to working order.

First off, please make sure that the backup company filename doesn't have symbols, special characters, or spaces on it or the folder holding the file. Here's how to check:

  1. Click the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type File Explorer into the search and open File Explorer.
  3. Locate and open the folder with your backup company file.
  4. Right-click the file with .qbb at the end of the file name and select Rename.
  5. Remove any symbols, special characters, or spaces from the filename.

Once done, let's try restoring your backup file again.

If you can't restore your QBB file, let's go back and open the company file where you create the backup file. Then, make a portable company file (QBM) and use it to restore your company file.

If the issue persists, you'll have to move your backup company file to a local hard drive. This is regularly your C: drive. Then, restore your company file.

While saving a backup TO a USB thumb drive can go off without a hitch, restoring FROM a USB thumb drive can cause problems and it is wise in such situations to copy.move the backup file to the same hard drive as the program software before restoring.

Additionally, you indicated that you upgraded from 2019 to 2020, Any possibility you are attempting to restore a 2020 backup into 2019? It cannot be done

We have tried all of the suggestions you gave with no success.  We have tried to restore multiple backup files and get the same error each time.  Data Services is currently working on restoring our backup but it's been 6 days with no word.  It's the end of a quarter and we are at a standstill until this gets fixed.  HELP!

Consider purchasing a 3rd party file repair service as another option.

@Wade_smartcpa

Do you have any other backup file to restore?

Can you open the sample file without any issue?

Hello, Wade_smartcpa.

Let's perform some troubleshooting procedures so you can restore your company file from your backup copy.

Your backup up file may be damaged, or there are some missing components on your QuickBooks Desktop. We can do a series of tests to determine the root cause of this.

Let's start by opening a sample file as suggested by Fiat. It's one way to identify the issue and take the necessary action to resolve it.

If you can open a sample file without any issues, you can download and install the QuickBooks Tool hub and then run the Company File issue to fix the data issue in your backup file. Check out this article so you'll have a guide on the process: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

If unable to open a sample file, let's run QuickBooks Desktop repair to ensure that there are no missing components that cause the software's unusual behavior. I'll show you how.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu, then click Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs and Features, then Uninstall a Program.
  4. Choose QuickBooks from the list of programs, then click Uninstall/Change.
  5. Select Continue or Next.
  6. Click Repair, then Next.
  7. Once done, hit Finish.

I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Support if the problem continues. They can do screen sharing to further assist you with retrieving your company file.

I'll also include this link for your reference to learn more about restoring backup files: Restore a backup of your company file.

If you have any more issues, feel free to post a response in the comments section below. I'll be around to take care of it.

@Wade_smartcpa

It is very possible that your company file is corrupted. Utilize QB ToolHub and Chat Support to fix your file. Otherwise, you will have to purchase a third-party file repair service.
