Print set up

After upgrading to the new desktop version, my print setup can't 'find' my printer. Now my only options are PDF or TPVM. The former printer name is showing up correctly but it has the PDF or TPVM options only. How do I remove those?

Print set up

Hi petheri,

Thank you for upgrading to the new version. You can make your printer as the default one, so QuickBooks will detect it when you print a file. You can consult an IT professional if you're not familiar with your printer setup.

If you get the same thing, you'll want to follow the steps to troubleshoot printing issues in QuickBooks using the Print and PDF Repair Tool.

Please let us know if you have questions.

Print set up

This is coming from your Computer; QB finds what the Computer has installed.

If this is Windows 10, go to settings for Printer and devices and remove the checkmark for Allow Windows to Manage My Printer. Here you also see the installed Printers. QB cannot find what doesn't show here.

Thanks for joining this thread, @Linda9877. I'd like to share some troubleshooting steps to isolate the printing issue in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

First, let's test your printer to see if it can print outside of QBDT.

  1. Click Start and browse to Notepad.
  2. Enter some text and choose File, then Print.
  3. Select the correct printer and select Print.

If printing works outside of QBDT, you can use the Print & PDF Repair Tool from the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This fixes most of the common printing issues.

If the tool doesn't work, you can manually rename the QBPrint.QBP file. It's usually saved in these folders:

  • Windows 10, 8.1, and 8: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20xx
(20xx represents the version of your QuickBooks.)
  • Server 2008 and Server 2012: C:\Program Data\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR and C:\Users\**remote user**\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\ YEAR VERSION\TSPrinterSettings
Note: Terminal Service users report finding duplicate copies of the Qbprint.qbp file with the stored client data files; double-check all folders for odd instances.

Then, follow these steps to rename it:

  1. Right-click the QBprint.qbp file for your QuickBooks version and select Rename.
  2. Add the word "old" to the file name (i.e. QBPrint.qbp.old)
  3. Launch QuickBooks once more.
  4. Click the File menu and select Printer Setup.
  5. Choose any transaction in the Form Name list and select OK. This will create a new QBprint.qbp file.
  6. Try to open and print any transaction.

If the issue persists, I recommend following the steps from this article. It also includes other alternatives that you can take to isolate this issue.

For more hints about sorting out printing errors, you can also check out this article: Troubleshoot Issues with Printing and .PDF Files.

Please keep in touch if you need more help with printing your transactions or forms in QBDT. I'll be always around ready to help. Have a great day!
