Big Leap: Upgrading company file from 2007 to 2021.

Trying to upgrade my company file from (very old) 2007 version to the new Desktop Pro 2021. When I try to open the company file in 2021, I get a 6094 error. I do not have my files on a server, and there is no antivirus software blocking Quickbooks. I've called four times and no one has been able to help me. Is there a way to upgrade my file from 2007 to 2021, or did I waste my money on purchasing this new version?

Yes, you're right. Upgrading your company file from the 2007 version to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro 2021 is a big leap, @splander. However, I'm here to guide you in resolving the error 6094 so you can get back to business in no time.

The QBDT program has a 3-year life cycle. You would need to go from 2007 to 2010 to 2013 to 2016 to 2019 to 2021. Then, restore the file in between. This may be the reason you've encountered error 6094. It usually occurs due to anti-virus software (PC Tools Internet Security, AVG Anti-Virus, and SpyHunter Malware) and when the system fails to launch the web database. To resolve this, I'd recommend performing the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure your anti-virus software is on the latest update.
  2. Restore qbdmgr.exe and qbdmgrN.exe from the virus vault or quarantine.
  3. Prevent QBDT Directory from being scanned by adding exceptions on your anti-virus software.
  4. Repair the QBDT program.

Once done, you're able to upgrade your company file. This way, you can utilize it using the 2021 version of QBDT. You can refer to this article's Step 3 section for the step-by-step guide: Upgrade your company files after switching to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

In case the issue continues, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care team again. They can securely pull up your account, have all the necessary tools to upgrade your company file, and guide you with a fix. You'll first have to check out our support hours to ensure we can assist you on time. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the Help menu.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  4. Click the Contact us option.
  5. Give a brief description of your issue.
  6. Select Let's talk and then choose a way to connect.

In the meantime, I'm adding this article to help you get familiar with the program: QuickBooks Desktop user guides. It contains do-it-yourself articles, training, and pro advice links to name a few.

Please know that you're always welcome to comment below if you have other concerns or follow up inquiries about upgrading the QBDT program and your company file. I'm just around to help. Take care.

@splander

You have to convert your data file(s) in stages. You should find and install the trial license of QBD 2011 and 2015 prior to converting the file(s) on QBD 2021. Contact us should you need those trial licenses. Another option, you may purchase a 3rd party conversion service.

I am experiencing similar issues with my desktop 2021 version.  I installed QB Desktop Pro Plus 2021 version on my laptop and tried to upload data from my 2008 version via thumb drive from another computer.  Receiving the same error message.

Find the trial license of QBD 2011 and 2015 as I mentioned in earlier post or purchase a 3rd party conversion service.

Thank you for your post.  I am in the process of upgrading my QB 2007 to QB 2021.  I have spent a considerable amount of time on chat (over 3 hours last night).  The support person installed QB 2012 Accountant instead of QB Desktop Pro 2012.  I asked if this was an error since I am not an accountant. She removed it and then reinstalled the same software.  She told me that she confirmed with the back office that the accountant version is the one I need.  Additionally both times that I have spoken with support no one has advised me that this has to be done in 3 year increments.  I am home on a Friday night ready to get this done only to learn that there is no support over the weekend.  Perhaps I should be looking for different software.  I cannot even load the 2021 version at this time.  I am not a happy customer right now

@Quickiemcquicker

You may self install the trial license and upgrade your file. Installing QBD 2011 or 2012 is one of the steps to upgrade it as I mentioned earlier.

I realize this is a little late to the game but I figure if anyone else runs across this via google search it may help them.

I had tried the mentioned fixes on this page, but didn't have third party av or anit-malware so nothing was getting quarantined (checked windows defender, etc.), Also tried finding and downloading the between versions of qb to update the data file progressively through the versions ex: 2011, then 2015, etc. No luck finding any trials, all links seemed to be dead or take you to an upgrade page or sales page for qb online.

What worked for me: First, Backup your file manually, or through your current version of QB if it's still available. I had installed the 2021 version and was getting the 6094, -1 (I think).

Downloaded the Quickbooks Tool Hub

Run it, Selected the option for having trouble accessing the data file, Locate and select your data file. It will run a repair on said data file, Then after it had completed the repair I attempted to open it in 2021 and the option to update the data file to the new version was offered. I suspect the data repair tool makes adjustments to the tables which might bring it's compatibility up far enough to update the data file itself natively through quickbooks? I have no idea, but the data was all there and working in 2021.

So this is a vote for the quickbooks tools hub, Whoever came up with the idea of combining all of the needed tools into that one piece of software deserves a raise.

@mwwebster

Do you need to upgrade data file from QBD 2007 to QBD 2023?

Can you still run QBD 2007 on your machine?

Big Leap: Upgrading company file from 2007 to 2021.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, mwwebster. I'll show you how to move data in QuickBooks Desktop and how it works. I'll also make sure you can transfer them from 2007 to the current one.

The QBDT program has a 3-year life cycle. You would need to go from 2007 to 2010 to 2013 to 2016 to 2019 to 2022 or to the current one. To accomplish this, I recommend downloading and running our 30-day trial version of QBDT. You can then restore the file between the versions and open your company file from there using the backup company file (.qbb). Before doing so, you'll have to make sure that your computer's operating system, hardware, software, and other requirements are compatible to run QuickBooks Desktop. You can open this article to see extra details: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

Once everything looks good, here's how to back up your accounting data in QBDT.

  1. Go to the File menu and select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  2. Click the File menu again and hover over Back up Company. Then choose Create Local Backup.
  3. In the window, select Local Backup and Next.
  4. From the Local Backup Only section, select Browse and where you want to save your backup company file.
  5. This runs a test to make sure your backup file is in good shape before you save.
  6. Click OK and select Save it now and Next.

Then, you may open this article on how you can use your backup company file to restore your company file: Restore a backup of your company file.

Lastly, you may refer to this article if you need help resolving any issues that cause QuickBooks Desktop to stop working: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.

Please keep me posted if you need additional assistance on how to transfer your data in QBDT. I'm always here to help, mwwebster. Have a great day!
