Hi there, qlewis,

Are you getting this message "QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file. QuickBooks could not create a disk image."? If so, the following statement below are the possible reason that causes the error:

  • The primary cause of the error is the unavailability of the storage device that stores the backup file. For example, The external storage device where QuickBooks creates the backup is no longer connected to the computer.
  • Damage in the company file data is also a reason that causes failure to back up the data in QuickBooks.
  • Setting up a wrong backup path can cause QuickBooks to freeze or display backup failed error to the user.

To fix this issue, you can follow the solutions outlined below:

SOLUTION 1: VERIFY AND REBUILD QUICKBOOKS COMPANY FILE

The data on your file may be damaged. You can run the verify and rebuild data tool to resolve this.

SOLUTION 2: VERIFY THE BACKUP DIRECTORY IN QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to Edit, then Preferences.
  3. Check the backup directory you have selected in QuickBooks.
  4. Make sure QuickBooks has a valid path to create the backup file.

SOLUTION 3:  RENAME QUICKBOOKS NETWORK DATA (.ND) FILE

  1. Exit QuickBooks Desktop software and open Windows File Manager.
  2. Navigate to C:\ Users\ Public\ Public Documents\ Intuit\ QuickBooks\ and locate the network data file.
  3. The file will have the same name as your company file but with .ND extension.
  4. Right click the file and select Rename.
  5. Add .OLDFILE at the end of the file name and save the file.
  6. Try to create a backup of the company file once again.

I'll also appreciate it if you can add the exact error, a screenshot maybe. This will help me provide the exact solution needed so you can backup your company file.

I'll keep this post while waiting for your response. Thank you and stay safe!

Hello there, @wwc11.

I'd be happy to help you load your company back up file. First, I'd like to know if you've encountered an error when getting your backup. This will help me to identify what specific resolution I'm going to share with you to fix it.

However, if there's none, you'll have to make sure that the company file where you saved the back up has a .qbb file extension.

  1. Open the QuickBooks Desktop program, then go to the File menu, and select Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and click Next.
  3. Click Local Backup and then Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. This is the format: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open.
  6. Select Save. If you see any messages about possibly overwriting your data, select the option that best fits your needs.

I tried steps 1 and 2. After each of them, I get a small window with just: "! Failed". I cannot do a backup of the file using QB, but I DID make one by copying all the relevant QB files to a separate folder. I was able to do the verify (by skipping the QB backup) and rebuild. Both appeared to be OK. I am running as the Windows System Administrator with all privileges, using Windows 11.  No folders appear blocked. I can get into the company file, but I am not the QB user (our accountant does that), so I don't know how to test the program. Windows event viewer shows this: An unexpected error has occured in "QuickBooks: Premier Nonprofit Edition 2021":
DBConnPool::HandleConnectionError errorCode:-6069, dbCode:-103 from file:'src\connpool.cpp' at line 1043 from function:'DBMgr::DBConnPool::init'

Hello, jfgb.

The error you've encountered is part of the 6000 error series that prevents users from accessing the QuickBooks company file. The error takes place when the original company file is replaced with a copy or a backup file having the same name, and the original file has been moved to a different location.

There are several instances when this same error can crop up, such as the installation of the QuickBooks software or the start-up or shutdown of your computer. When you keep track of the error code, you can fix it with utter ease. Below are the steps that can help you in resolving the Intuit QB Error.

  • Before getting started, log into your computer as Administrator
  • Now open Intuit Sync Manager
  • Move to the Options and then hit Show Details
  • Next, select the company name and right-click on it to display the drop-down
  • Select Company Info from the list
  • Check if the path listed as the location is correct
  • After verifying, go back to the company folder again and replace the copy or backup file with the original company file that was moved.

Now try to open the company file again.

If the same thing happens, I'd suggest reaching out to our QuickBooks Support Team. They have the tools to do a screen sharing to further investigate the root cause of it.

You can also get back to me if you need anything else. I'll be around to help you out again. Take care always.

We don't keep our files at Intuit (or any other online service) so we don't have a link for the Intuit Sync Manager. We can open and use our company files, but cannot do a backup using  File>Backup Company>Create Local Backup. The verification process succeeds.

Try opening the sample company file to isolate the issue. Are you able to create the backup file?

I have the exact same problem, and it also just started out of the blue a few days ago. I have followed the rebuild and verify steps and the issue persists.

Good morning, @MarthaCPA.

Thanks for swinging by the QuickBooks Community for support.

Since you can create a backup of the sample company file, this let's us know there's an issue with your company file. I see that you've tried using our Rebuild and Verify Utilites. When you used the utilities, did any error messages show on the Rebuild Results? Were any left unrepaired?

If you wouldn't mind, could you clarify a few additional things for me?

  • Are you the only user effected?
  • Have you tried creating a backup at a different workstation under the same username and was successful?
  • Did you save the sample company backup in the same folder as your company file's backup?

I also wanted to ask if you would mind sharing a screenshot of the error message you receive when creating a backup? This way, I can take a better look and investigate further.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you reply. Chat with you soon!

@MarthaCPA

There is a possibility that your company file is corrupted. Chat Support and ask Data Service to fix it. Otherwise you have to purchase a 3rd party file repair service.
