Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

I really hate it when Apple has an update and then Quickbooks doesn't work.

I just updated to Big Sur not thinking that Quickbooks Pro 2015 desktop for Mac would not work.

Is there a new version of Quickbooks that works with Big Sur? Or, do I somehow have to uninstall Big Sur and return to Catalina?

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Hello, PastorReformed.

It's my pleasure to provide insights about Big Sur and why it doesn't work in QuickBooks for Mac.

Currently, our QuickBooks for Mac product doesn't fully support Big Sur 11.0. We hope to fully support this new macOS in the next week or two. Once the final version of the macOS is released, it takes some time to test our products against it to identify any issues that need to be addressed.

Then, it will take a little time to resolve any issues to declare it officially compatible. Also, make sure to check our system minimum requirements before downloading the new version. To ensure QuickBooks can be installed without any problem.

So keep an eye on our QuickBooks Blog. From there, you can see the future developments and the latest news about QuickBooks and what our Product Care Team is working on. You'll also find information as to when Big Sur is fully compatible.

Thank you for your time and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to post here. Have a great day!

I already installed Big Sur so what do I have to do to now use quick books? Do I need to remove Big Sur?

You'll have to change the Mac OS, BP1952.

To ensure you're able to use QuickBooks, the computer needs to meet the minimum system requirements. See the details below:

  • Intel processor, Core 2 Duo or higher.
  • Multi-user Server: Intel Core 2 Duo or higher processor to run a server.
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB RAM recommended).
  • 250 MB of available disk space.
  • CD/DVD drive or Internet connection for downloaded installation.

Once Big Sur is compatible with QuickBooks, an email will be sent to inform everyone. You can also visit the QuickBooks Blog for more product updates.

You can contact Apple directly to have them help you in downgrading the macOS.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Mary, your reply was unhelpful. What is the value-add of referring to "Minimum System Requirements"? Anyone attempting to run Mac Big Sur would surely already own a Mac that meet these minimums!

The remainder of my post will be addressed directly at Intuit Mac Team and in particular the Product Owner:

Lets talk about lack of planning, lack of clarity on the release date for compatible versions:

As an Apple Registered Developer myself I'm familiar with the access that Intuit has had. Since June 2020 WWDC, Intuit has had access to early releases of Big Sur, and early releases of the M1-based Mac hardware in the form of a $500 Mac Mini M1 Kit. Every few weeks Apple would release new versions of Big Sur beta to Apple Registered Developers. As the dates moved closed to GA (general availability) Apple makes available release candidates, aka GM (gold master) and sometimes several weeks and several releases like GM1, etc.

So this begs to question...why is Intuit ALWAYS days or weeks behind Apple when it comes time to product compatibility updates? Please tell me it is because you do manual testing only, you only have 1 offshore developer, and they had no access to the Apple M1 hardware kit that Apple made available?? Otherwise,...frankly there is no excuse. For a company with Intuit's size and reputation, we die-hard QuickBook for Mac users expect more. Get your act together or sell off the Mac division to some angel investor group so it can be properly supported.

I hope that QB fixes the existing issues in a timely manner. Last time with Catalina, QB lagged for weeks. QB should be better prepared given that the Beta version was available for a long time. Disappointed with QB yet again.

Please add me to the update when the email is sent out - I also cannot access my QB on Macbook / Big Sur. I surely hope you all can fix this promptly.

Absolutely.  It's astonishing to me the misses the QB for Mac team has. While I'm glad they brought it back, they really need to support Apple Ecosystem and do beta releases aligned with the OS updates... you know, like every other major software provider does. Literally this is the only product I have that precludes my going to Big Sur on my primary device.

It's not just QB2015...QB2019 doesn't either. I do not understand why QB always lags behind Apple's updates...frustrating and annoying. I can't update accounting, prepare invoices or get paid as a result. QB continues to get low marks for their lack of attention to current their applications current - abysmal service. I'm looking to change software given that QB is pathetic is keeping current and this year in particular I can't wait for them to get their act together.

Too bad Intuit QB doesn't care about their customers.

Well said. I swear the reason behind it is because all they really care about is moving us to the online version so they can gouge us with subscription fees.

I agree. Quickbooks is ALWAYS the reason I have to wait to upgrade the Mac OS. EVERY TIME!

It makes me wonder why I trust my accounting to a company that lags behind.

How can we be notified  when older versions of Quickbooks will be able to open on BigSur?  I couldn't even change to online QB since I can't open my desktop version.

@janneraine

Consider to install your QBD Mac on other machine as the workaround and migrate to QBO.

Otherwise you have to wait until Intuit supports BigSur or purchase a 3rd party conversion service as the last resort.

Please reply back to this thread with alternatives to QB for small business owners who don’t wish to pay monthly fees for something used for accounting basics.

Intuit Staff, please STOP using canned replies. We are not requesting new features! We just want the software to work, period. If you have no value to add about our Big Sur crisis, just refrain from replies.

Count me as another outraged Mac user who just installed Big Sur and got the nasty surprise that it won't open Quickbooks 2019. I don't even know what to say. I did not have this on my 2020 Bingo card, although as I write this, I can see how foolish I was not to.

I appreciate you all for coming in.

The Big Sur 11.0 is not yet fully supported in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac reason why you're having trouble opening QuickBooks after downloading Big Sur.

I understand where you're coming from. We hear all your feedback and suggestions. I want you to be updated with the newly added features in the product by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Click New Features.
  3. Choose either New Feature Tour or What's New.

@Charies_M why are you posting screenshots for QuickBooks for Windows on a Mac thread and telling us about new features for that product?

Here's my strong suggestion: Be Transparent. Tell us WHY Intuit wasn't ready when Apple has been giving internal beta builds of Big Sur for 6 months. Tell us what the current internal estimates are for a release date for each of the products (FOR THE MAC LINEUP). This will help customer that are now stuck have some hope and allow them to decide what steps to take.

With all due respect, what's the use of checking out new features when the stupid application won't open? You clearly how no REAL idea how much this affects small business owners, especially at this time.
