Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

I'd like to be added to the mail list for updating my Quick Books 2016 to Big Sur.  It won't open at all so I need a way to upgrade without having to open it.

With the fiscal year closing upon us I'm flabbergasted that a major accounting software company would put its customers in this predicament.  None of the corp speak answers to the many questions in this thread are relevant.   If you want to keep customers you will have to do better.  I switched from Quicken for Mac to Banktivity for similar reasons and will do the same here if this isn't resolved quickly.

I'm more than happy to move over to QB online, but I can't migrate my data until they fix this and I can open QB on my desktop, and they already started charging me for the online subscription. SO BAD.

Hi there, paigeaxel.

We want this to be fixed as much as you do.

While our engineers are still working on it, you'll want to temporarily use at least macOS 10.14 (Mohave); supported by macOS 10.14 (Mojave). That way, you'll be able to convert QuickBooks Desktop for Mac file to QuickBooks Online.

Here's the link to get the best experience in QuickBooks: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.

Leave a comment again if you have more concerns. Wishing you all the best!

Is there any update on when an update will be available?  Not being able to open Quickbooks is preventing me from completing my PPP loan forgiveness application.

This is ridiculous. QB can certainly email me my monthly invoice every month, but can't send an email suggesting NOT to download BigSur until they're ready for it? This is incredibly bad timing, being end of year. My QB won't open at all and I can't track my time or send end-of-month invoices, which means I likely won't be paid this year for current work. Completely unacceptable and I am looking at alternatives. Please emails ALL Mac users when you have restored functionality.

Hi there, @KaizenDad

Thank you for following up with us about the compatibility between QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac and Big Sur.

There's no specific time frame as to when QBDT for Mac fully supports Big Sur. Rest assured that our engineers are working nonstop to ensure the option becomes available soon.

In the meantime, you follow the suggested steps above to temporarily use the supported software (least macOS 10.14 (Mohave); supported by macOS 10.14 (Mojave).

To learn more about the system requirements as well as the possible risk when attempting to run QuickBooks on unsupported versions, you can check out these links:

You can as well read the topics from our QBDT for Mac user's guide in case you need related resources while working with QuickBooks in the future.

Please feel free to leave a comment below if you have any other questions. I'm more than happy to help. Have a good day!

I'm confused about your reference to making a fix, where you refer to the "above" information. Which above information?  Are you referring to using QB online and will that be free until QB can do what it should have done weeks ago?  I bill by the hour and needlessly spending my time trying to get something I have paid for to work is incredibly frustrating.

I wish I could make it better, @ILS1.

As of the moment, any supported version of QuickBooks Desktop is not yet able to work with the latest Big Sur OS for MAC. This is the reason why you receive an error message and unable to install it successfully.

Learn more about this update with this article: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

Also, the information mentioned by my colleague, @Angelyn_T, is about the supported version of the operating system for QuickBooks Desktop for mac shared also by my colleague, @AlexV.

That being said, you can consider downgrading your OS and installing QuickBooks base on the following requirements outlined in this article: Find out what your computer needs to run the best QuickBooks Desktop experience.

Additionally, you can also browse for the content of this helpful article so you can keep up with the latest released updates: QuickBooks Resource Center.

If you have any other concerns. please let me know by leaving any comments below. Stay safe!

Before making such a ridiculous suggestion , have you ever done that especially if you have updated other applications that were ready for Big Sur?

Quit marketing to us and fix it!! 12 days now without accounting. How about you try running a small business without accounting?

So QB is not going to provide free online access to address this critical mistake made by QB? Downgrading the upgrade involves deleting the hard drive of the computer. Guess what -- I am not at all interested in doing that.

Please confirm that there are no current fixes for the problem as references to articles about why it's not working are completely uninteresting to me. I just want it to work. Providing free access to the online version is the absolute least QB can do to address this massive failure on QB's part.

I just downloaded the Quickbooks Mac 2021 30 day free trial and was able to open my company file. Hopefully they will sort it out for the older versions before it expires.

Hello @Per8hed,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. Allow me to step in and provide some clarification about the Intuit's support policy.

Currently, all supported versions of QuickBooks for Mac aren't fully supported yet with the new macOS version. However, Intuit is diligently working to ensure the program will be compatible with Big Sur very soon.

For more information, as well as some updates regarding the support policy, I recommend the following article: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

Hello, @Sdrkbr15.

Let me share some information to ensure that your QuickBooks is up and running.

There are two possible reasons why you're unable to open QuickBooks on your device.

  • An obsolete operating system
  • You are using an old version of QuickBooks.

To resolve this, you'd want to download the latest release version of your QuickBooks software. Just a heads-up, we've sent a notification to inform you in advance about the services for older versions of QuickBooks Desktop that are scheduled to be discontinued. This includes the discontinued critical security updates for QuickBooks Mac 2016 that helps resolves unexpected behavior while trying to open it.

Also, with the release of the new macOS 11 Big Sur, QuickBooks is also set to release updates to its supported versions to ensure that it is compatible with it.

Feel free to leave your comments below if you have other questions about using QuickBooks. I'm always here to help.

Will QB 2015 be able to run on BigSur? Currently I cannot even open it so any comments from prior moderators regarding a lack of functionality are a big understatement since it will not open!

@ILS1 @Sdrkbr15

QBD Mac 2015 and QBD Mac 2016 are outdated. They won't support BigSur. You may utilize the trial license of QBD Mac 2021 as the workaround.

If you don't want to spend $300 go to: https://www.etsy.com/shop/Freshwowdeal .  I got a Quickbooks for Mac desktop 2020 license from them for $69.99 and it is working with Big Sur so far including data migration from Quickbooks Mac 2016.

Hello, rtsdesign12.

I have an update regarding the newly deployed release for QuickBooks Mac 2021.

Yes, the new update for QuickBooks Mac 2021 (R3) has been released to support the new Big Sur system. You can download the release by following these steps:

  1. Open the QuickBooks drop down menu, select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. On the prompt window, click Install Update.
  3. Hit Install and Relaunch.

Additional reference about downloading updates can be found in this article: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

We plan to release the compatibility update for the rest of the supported versions. When they're available, we will automatically deploy them for download.

After installing the update, you're free to check out our QuickBooks Mac articles if you need help. I'm sure they'll guide you in doing a specific task in the program.

I have you covered if you have other questions with the Mac version. Just create a new thread or post your replies here, and I'll be there to help.

I am in exactly this situation.  The offers to update to QBD for Mac 2021 are of no use to me because the first step requires having the ability to open QB .  I'll have to change to another system as well if this isn't resolved soon.
