Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Happy Thanksgiving, Tom.

Our engineers are still working on releasing the compatibility update for the rest of the Mac versions. If you're using QuickBooks Mac 2021, we recently deployed a new update to make this version run on the new Big Sur system.

You can check this article for the steps on how to update your 2021 Mac version: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

If you're using earlier supported versions, you'll want to revert the Big Sur update so you can open QuickBooks and run those reports. Reach out to Apple's support channels for assistance regarding the process.

In the meantime, you can visit this article from time to time for updates regarding the compatibility issue: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

After successfully opening QuickBooks, you can visit this article if ever you need help running or customizing the reports.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving. I'd be glad to help out if you have other concerns. Just post them here, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Glad to have you here in the Community, @joeduckbutter.

At this time, the compatibility of the rest of the Mac versions to the new Big Sur system is still in progress. We encourage you to update your QuickBooks regularly, so once any updates are released will sync into the program.

Here's how you can update it:

  1. From the QuickBooks▼ dropdown, select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version is available, select Install Update.
  3. When prompted, select Install and Relaunch.
  4. When the update is complete, QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens.

For additional information on the different ways of updating QuickBooks, please see this link: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

I'd also recommend visiting the link shared by my peer jamespaul above to be updated with the status of this compatibility issue.

Know that you can always get back to us if you have any other concerns. I'll be right here for you. Have a good one!

Chris, NEVER update your MacOS if keeping QB working is a priority. Intuit is notoriously slow on responding to MacOS updates. I’m guessing your 2015 desktop version isn’t going to work even after Intuit’s update. I’ve been using QB for Mac for almost 20 years, and this has ALWAYS been the case.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

When I attempt to open QB Pro on my MacBook Pro after Big Sur version 11.0.1 update I get a giant error message.  What's scary to me is that there are no dropdown options along the top of my screen ... not even the word "QuickBooks" shows up.  So how, if an update becomes available, without the availability of a dropdown option of "update" etc., how will I be able to update to the QB version that works with Big Sur?

Trust me when I say that I'm not a high tech user of QB.  I hope and pray that updating to a compatible version will be "EASY".

I’m not a software consultant and can’t really answer your question but I would hope that the lesson learned here is as I have previously stated: NEVER  update your Mac OS until you get the word that there is a compliant version of QuickBooks available. (If you need to use Quickbooks) This will usually not happen for several weeks if not longer after the Mac OS has been released as Intuit views Mac users as more of an “inconvenience “ than paying customers.

Is there an update on the time frame for the Big Sur patch?

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

I have Quickbooks For Mac 2019 desktop version, what is the best solution for the future? I have not done the Big Sur update due to past experience with the Catalina and Mojave. And I want to avoid that and wait for the official word to upgrade. Does the cloud based Quickbooks offer a more trusting environment that mitigates these update pitfalls before being released to the Quickbooks online users?

Quickbooks still won't open after Big Sur update and it's been over two weeks.   When will this be fixed?

Make sure to always update QuickBooks to the latest release, b99nafus.

Doing so ensures QuickBooks stays compatible with the device you're using.

QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 R3 is now available. This release is required to make your QBDT for Mac compatible with the new macOS Big Sur.

You can refer to the steps provided by my colleague above on how to update QuickBooks.

If you want to check out QuickBooks Online, here's an overview: Getting Started With QuickBooks Online.

Here's another one for future reference if you decide to convert to QB Online: The QuickBooks Guide to Converting QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

If you have more questions about QB Online, just leave a reply. I'll be more than willing to answer them for you.

I have Quickbooks for Mac Desktop 2020, when will this be compatible with MacOS 11.0 Big Sur?

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Hi QuickBooks (Mac) Team

Do you have an update on when you'll fully support MacOS 11.0 (Big Sur)?  Two weeks ago you said we should anticipate "a week or two" to test your products and make them compatible with the new OS.  I appreciate that it takes time to update your software when Apple decides to update their OS. Just need to know if you think a fix/update will be soon (within a month) or if I should look for alternate ways to perform my bookkeeping.

Your answer (hopefully not a canned response) will inform your 1 million+ businesses that use your products on the Mac. All of us would appreciate a candid and transparent answer from senior management.

Unfortunately canned responses are the norm in this group. MacOS reconciliation for previous releases of QB for Mac (even 2020) appear to be a low priority since Intuit appears to be pushing everyone to buying their "new" 2021 version of QB for Mac. I bought QB for Mac Desktop 2020 and am holding out little hope it will be made compliant with Big Sur. If there was a better Mac-friendly book keeping option out there, I'd be gone in a heartbeat from QB.

What is the status of the update so that Quickbooks is compatible with Big Sur?

The post states that this would be resolved within one or two weeks and it has been two weeks. I am unable to access Quickbooks, invoice clients, etc. Please advise.

Greetings, @sherrie LBR.

I can imagine the situation you’re in right now. Please do know this isn’t what I want you to experience with QuickBooks.

Currently, our engineering team is still working on the compatibility update for Quickbooks with Big Sur. Rest assured they’re all hands in implementing this update to all Mac versions.

While I can’t provide you a specific time frame as to when the update will roll out. I suggest checking this article for reference on any news and updates regarding the compatibility issue: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

In the meantime, you’ll want to revert the Big Sur update to access your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac. For this, I’d recommend checking with Apple’s support team for guidance.

Additionally, once the updates are released, you’ll need to update your QBDT software to the latest release to ensure a smooth synchronization.

I appreciate your patience while we’re working on implementing this. In case you have other concerns with your QBDT, you’re always welcome to post a reply. I’ll be around ready to assist you. Keep safe and take care.

When will an update for QB Desktop for Mac 2020 be available?

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Here are three questions easily answered with a simple "yes" or "no."

Do you understand what is involved in rolling back the Big Sur OS to an earlier version?

Do you understand how rolling it back will affect other 3rd party programs that have been updated to run on Big Sur?

Do you understand how placing the burden on us to work around Intuit's untimely updates causes customer dissatisfaction?

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Thanks for posting here, @nacamera and @mike40ryan,

We acknowledge the urgency of having QuickBooks for Mac to support the MacOS Big Sur. At the moment, we don't have any communication on when our engineers will release the update patch for you to download on your computer.

Our developers are working internally to get this available in no time. The alternatives you can temporarily try is to install QuickBooks in a Mac PC that has not yet updated or roll back to an older MacOS version. Please note that these are completely optional until the update is released.

To be updated with the QB Mac 2020 software updates, see this link here: Release notes for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2020

We ask for your understanding and patience while we are working on this concern. This thread will remain open for questions and updates. Stay safe and thank you.

Jen_D:

One question I have repeatedly asked that I have yet to have sufficiently answered is: Why does it take QB/Intuit weeks if not months to update QB Desktop for Mac to a current MacOS compliant state?

It always seems to be a "surprise" to the Mac QB team when a major new MacOs update is released. As you can see by the flooded message boards from desperate MacOS business owners trying to use QB for Mac this is not a good thing. As previously stated, I don't work in the computer industry or with software as my profession, but I'm aware that Apple sends out developer versions of the new MacOS MONTHS before it's released for the purpose of allowing software developers (like Intuit/Quickbook for Mac) to be prepared for when the MacOS public release happens. In my 20 years experience with Intuit/QB for Mac, I will say that they have NEVER been prepared for a new MacOS release! Can you tell me why this is, as it seems unimaginable for a company the size of Intuit to be so ill prepared when so many customers paying good money for your software expect better service.

Gross incompetence?

Perhaps, it's really that it's not a priority for them, because Apple DOES provide early releases and toolkits that they could be developing against BEFORE the final release.  As a consumer, I've been running Big Sur for almost 3 months (on a second machine).

As I previously stated (somewhere) Intuit/QB has a LONG history of treating Mac users as a nuisance rather than a growing-important part of their client base. As Apple continues to make inroads into the computer hardware side of the business (laptops, iPads, iMacs) you'd think Intuit would get the hint...

I just purchased QB for Mac 2020 desktop and installed it. The installation was easy (which surprised me). I upgraded the files from QB2016 and it is working awesome! It was 399 for the new version, but I can access everything! Just glad I can actually access everything.

I just got off the phone with QB. They are no longer supporting QB for MAC 2015. Has anyone else heard this?
