Let me know if you have other questions. Take care!
Can anyone recommend a reliable alternative to QB for Mac? I need a product that I can depend upon and it doesn't look like Intuit. At this point I may have botched my PPP loan forgiveness application because I wasn't able to pull information from QB. Their proposed solution involving reverting to a previous OS version isn't realistic.
Thanks for dropping by on this thread, @KaizenDad. At the moment, the alternative way or other software is to use at least macOS 10.14 (Mohave); supported by macOS 10.14 (Mojave).
Check out this article for more insights: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.

Kaizen dad:
if you locate an alternative please post here. I’ll jump ship with you!
Hello there, @navydoc.
To stay in the loop whenever any updates regarding the compatibility of Big Sur to the other versions of QuickBooks for Mac are released, I recommend visiting this link: Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.
Moreover, I encourage you to update your QuickBooks regularly, so once any available updates will sync into the program immediately.
Here's how you can update it:
l also suggest checking out our QuickBooks for Mac site to be updated with our latest happenings and product road-maps: What's new with QuickBooks for Mac.
Know that my doors are always open to help should you need anything else. Have a nice day!
Tomorrow, Dec. 3rd will be three weeks since Mac OS 11-Big Sur was released to the public. I don't understand why we have to wait this long with Intuit. Every Mac upgrade takes forever. You are so far behind every other company when I know you get the pre-release like everyone else. QuickBooks 2019 for Mac
Give us an update!
Armadillo:
Stand by for a canned answer about rolling back your OS from Big Sur (Ridiculous) or buying the new 2021 version, because that magically is Big Sur compliant! Intuit really sucks...
I upgraded to Quickbooks 2020 Desktop for Mac and it works perfect. Got it on eBay for $45...worth a shot.
I must be the odd duck here, as my QB Desktop MAC 2020 will open after upgrading to BS. I have three companies, two of which will open and function normally as far as I can tell.
The third, will not open up, and gives me a little pop up window saying [The document "BT WHITE PROPERTY LLC.qb2020" could not be opened. Operation not permitted]
Obviously this is a problem.
What to do while we wait (again) for an update from Intuit?
Going back to Catalina is NOT an option, and "be patient and wait for an update" is hardly any better.
Lots of us small business owners need a fix ASAP.
Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to fix this, @tankerdude.
To start, we can reset your admin password. Let me show you how:
You can also transfer the location of your third company file. If the same error happens, I recommend contacting our support team.
Here's how:
I've also added this article that can provide additional information about QuickBooks Mac 2021: New in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021.
Please let me know how it goes by leaving a comment down below. I'll be glad to assist you. Have a great day.
Unfortunately, I installed Big Sur and cannot open Quickbooks. In order to upgrade QB, I have to uninstall the version that I have, pay for and reinstall the new version, and restore my company files? Otherwise, I have to revert the OS so I can open and access my existing version of Quickbooks to upgrade? Is this correct?
@tankerdude Mac using business owners are WAY down on Intuit's priority list. How else can you explain keeping thousands of people waiting for an update to their software that works with the current MacOS? I learned this 17+ years ago: NEVER update your MacOS until Intuit can "catch up" -----which can take many weeks (usually). They really don't care (obviously) to service their Apple/Mac clients needs in a realistic timely fashion.
Any update on this issue with Big Sur and Quickbooks 2019 yet? This is getting ridiculous. I need to do payroll and pay taxes. When can we expect this problem to be fixed???
I can provide some information about QuickBooks for Mac and macOS 11 Big Sur, @quickhlp1.
Intuit is still working to create a supported version of QuickBooks for Mac that’ll work perfectly with Apple's new macOS 11 Big Sur. You can always visit the Firm of the Future site. It contains resources and tips to help easily use QuickBooks.
See this article to know more about the necessary system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019.
Can you tell us more about the error you're having with running payroll and paying taxes? That'll help us get the best resolution for the error you're having.
I'm always here to help you run your payroll with your QuickBooks for Mac and or anything else. Take care and have a wonderful day!
Just to put it out there, if anyone starts a class action lawsuit for this ridiculous, unnecessary problem, I will happily join in.
Please advise, this was three weeks ago with no update.
I received a laptop with Big Sur installed on it - I need to migrate my data to this new computer asap so that I can send this computer in for repair... and I can't do this until I am sure that Quickbooks 2020 for Mac works on Big Sur.
Absolutely, I'm not surprised. Last year we had to upgrade from 2012 to 2020. Sadly, 2021 wasn't available... now I'm stuck with 2020 and I don't want to try on Big Sur and have it fail.
The old versions of the software will simply not run on the newest machines. The amount of work to try to maintain them becomes too onerous.
When or IS Quickbooks ever going to work with Big Sur? I made the mistake of upgrading to Big Sur, can't access Quickbooks files, I do NOT want to pay monthly fees to infinity!
Thanks for joining the conversation, @crsofttroy.
I'd like to reiterate some information that was shared by some of my colleagues, in case it's gotten buried in this thread.
Apple's new macOS 11 Big Sur was just released on November 12, 2020. As it was mentioned, no supported version of QuickBooks for Mac is fully compatible with this new macOS version.
Rest assured, Intuit is working very hard to ensure our supported versions of QuickBooks for Mac will work as designed and hope to have this completed very soon.
I hope this was helpful and please feel free to reach back out with any other questions you may have!
Jessica_young:
I think most people in here realize MacOS Big Sur was released 11/12/20. Most people also know Apple was releasing developer versions of this OS SIX MONTHS AGO, so we're ALL just a bit confused as to why it seems like Intuit is starting from scratch on 11/12/20 in getting us our Big Sur compliant versions of Quickbooks. THIS is the real question on everyone's minds...
Looks like a ploy to get people to purchase the most recent version because they are stuck in limbo and not able to open their files. Answers from Intuit in all threads are non-productive and do not give any information about WHEN we can expect compatibility. Because this has happed with pretty much every MacOS update, there is no way you can tell me this isn't on purpose to force people to upgrade. Adobe has a ton of programs and they all work fine currently - only one had an initial issue (Acrobat) and it was fixed in a timely manner. There is no other reason Intuit - there has been plenty of time to develop an update with the pre-release of the OS - not taking care of your current client base is shameful (In 5 days it will be a whole month!). If I hadn't been through this so many times with Intuit before I would be more understanding. It is so frustrating. Thanks for making us Mac users know where we stand once again!
This is ridiculous! It’s December 8th and I have tons of work to enter and bills etc... it’s year end and if something don’t get done soon I’ll have to work 24 hrs a day till the end of the month to catch up!. Bad enough Covid-19 put enough businesses on the brink of no return, I don’t need something else keeping me from running my business, everything’s been on hold for almost a month now!. Stupid that apple would do a system update in mid November, even more so QBs not being in the ball so their thousands of their loyal customers wouldn’t get screwed by it! I’m beyond a little upset.
Im done with quickbooks. Im not buying another quickbooks ever!!! I will do my accounting in a paper notebook before I ever buy quickbooks again. Maybe The quicklook team could really answer your question instead of just spewing out a crappy reply of how they are working so hard to resolve this issue. sounds like they have a huge team of one person working on this issue in their spare time. F off Quickbooks.
