I have business records in Quickbooks Pro 2015. I purchased Quickbooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022. Can I open the old database directly in Quickbooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022? Do I have to do something to prepare the old database first?
Hi RD48!
I can help you with upgrading QuickBooks Desktop and your company file.
QuickBooks Desktop has a 3-year lifecycle. Due to feature or version differences, it's best to upgrade your company file from 2015 to 2018 first before you jump over to 2022 to avoid data issues.
You don't need to purchase the 2018 version. Simply contact our Support Team so they can help you install the QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2018.
Check this link on how to upgrade your company file: Upgrade your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

So are you saying i can't upgrade directly to 2022 or that i shouldn't?
I'm glad you ask about this, Jabba513.
I can help bring clarifications to your question about upgrading QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
The QuickBooks Desktop software is a one time purchase. That means, no matter how old your version is, you can still use it for basic accounting purposes. However, QuickBooks Desktop can only be supported for 3 years. If you are using online services in QuickBooks like Payroll, Merchant Service, Online Banking and others, we encourage you to upgrade your version to continue the said services.
You can check this article to learn more about the discontinuation policy of QuickBooks Desktop: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.
This year 2022, QuickBooks Desktop only supports the following versions: 2019, 2021, and 2022. Since the latest answer on this thread is dated last year, therefore, it means you have to install 2019 version instead of 2018. This is done because you cannot transfer the files from an unsupported version to the latest version.
That said, please contact our QuickBooks Care Team so they can help you install a free trial version of QuickBooks Desktop 2019 and help you transfer your files once you have your QuickBooks Desktop 2022.Follow AlexV's instruction on how to reach us.

Do you have any specific reason to upgrade your version? You can still purchase the one time license for QBD 2021 if required.
I am using QB 2015 on an older computer. I am thinking to purchase a new computer and install QB 2023 and start anew in 2023, keeping the older files and SW on the older computer which still works just fine. Is this a workable solution, from your pov?
I appreciate you taking the time to reach out and joining this thread for assistance, @pcirvin.
Yes, it’s a workable solution. Since you’ll start a new in 2023, you can keep your older files and SW on the older computer.
The only thing you’ll keep in mind is when you transfer your company files between different locations and systems or computers, you’ll need to ensure they are running the same version and release.
And if you decide to utilize your previous QuickBooks version, you’ll have to manually reenter the transactions you’ve added in the upgraded file in the old backup file. In addition, you need to reinstall the old version in a different folder to restore the pre-conversion if you install your new version on top of the old one. Madelyn, I found this discussion and it is similar to what I need to do. I have 2015 QB Pro desktop and tried to do a Upgrade to 2023 desktop. I can type in the License Number ok , but when I type in the Product ID number which was furnished by QB I get an error message that it is the incorrect Product ID #. Is my version to old to upgrade?
Thanks for chiming in, Arlina. I'll share some details to help you upgrade from your current version to the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
The error message you're receiving indicates that your current license is a one-time purchase, which means it does not include access to future updates or subscriptions beyond the year 2023. To continue enjoying our services and receiving updates, I recommend purchasing a new desktop subscription.
By purchasing a new desktop subscription, you will have access to the latest features, improvements, and support throughout the subscription period. This ensures that you can make the most of our software and stay up to date with any advancements or enhancements we introduce.
