Upgrading from 2010

Still using QB 2010 (V11.0.13 R14) on my ancient office desktop Mac (running OS 10.6.8) and have been reluctant to upgrade to a new Mac and QB 2020 fearing I might lose records and/or screw things up by upgrading since I'm not very tech savvy. If I buy a new Mac running the latest macOS (Catalina?) can I assume I'll be able to upgrade my QB 2010 to a QB 2020 desktop version that will work? Also, my CPA is all Windows so can I assume QB 2020 for Mac will still allow me to create a back up copy for Windows? Thanks Community.

Hi there, @CBJR.

If you plan to use a QuickBooks Desktop product on macOS Catalina, let's ensure to use the latest releases of QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 (R7) or 2020 (R2 or later). This is to prevent the risk of data loss and crashes.

To guide you on how to use QuickBooks Desktop for Mac safely on the new macOS, Catalina, you may check this article for additional information: Risk of data file corruption QuickBooks Desktop for Mac users who attempt to run QuickBooks on macOS....

With regards to creating a backup copy from Mac to Windows for your accountant, you can perform round-tripping.

You may want to upgrade your QuickBooks version, I recommend getting in touch with our customer support care to guide you with the process. They can walk you through in converting your file successfully.

Also, I've added this article that provides helpful info about the operating system, hardware, software, and other requirements to run QuickBooks Desktop: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020 and Enterprise Solutions 20.0.

Reach out to me anytime if you have any other queries. I'll be right here to help you. Keep safe.

I am not sure you will able upgrading directly from QBD 2010 to 2020. You may need to purchase a 3rd party upgrade service later. Aside of that issue, if you want to purchase the license of QBD 2020 within this month, make sure you secured a free upgrade option to QBD 2021.

Sorry, but after looking through this info some more I realized I'm still not completely clear if I can upgrade directly from 2010 to 2019 (or 2020) or if that will have to be done incrementally? For example, can you confirm that I'll be able to simply do a "Back Up" from my current 2010 version and expect that it will open intact in the the 2019 (or 2020) version?

Also, your reply suggests getting in touch with your customer support care but its not clear how best to do that. All I seem to find on this site in the "support" tab is an opportunity to search for articles, video tutorials, etc. but not a direct link to someone who can provide more specific and detailed support. Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to us, CBJR.

You can upgrade your QuickBooks version from 2010 to 2019 (2020). However, you'll need to do it incrementally to avoid any data loss or damage. With that said, our Technical Support Team will be there to ensure that you can go through the process without any issues.

The suggestion of Fiat Lux - ASIA to use a third-party upgrade service provider will also work. The service provider's support will also be there to help you complete the process.

Let us know how this goes so we can further assist you.
