Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I've had the same guy call me off and on for over the past several weeks telling me that I'm not getting my updates and that my file is 43.9% corrupt. He told me that  I needed to write down a transmission # which I did.  Then he told me that I would have to pay support to repair my file. When I asked him what it would cost he said 90 days coverage for 199.00, or one year for 299.00. This was more than the first time he called where he quoted:

Data Service Team

1 Year 199.99

3 Year 299.99

99.99

[removed]

[removed]

Those were the phone numbers he gave me then.

I didn't get a phone number this time.  He spoke with a Indian/ Hindu -ish accent and told me his name was Brian Cox.

When I looked at the Quickbooks Intuit website, they didn't list any packages described this way.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Hi, VWeathers.

I appreciate you reaching us here in the QuickBooks Community. Let me help you get pointed in the right direction.

There are so many online scammers that wait for the right moment to trap you with wrong intentions. These scammers will call you and claim to be from Intuit QuickBooks. Be savvy with any information you give out over the phone.

Scammers ask clients to wire money,  they will ask for your financial or personal information with the unknown message senders or phone calls. This is called 'phishing.' Eventually, these people try to trick you for stealing sensitive information, do not act unless you are sure about the authenticity of the deal.

Since the Community is a peer-to-peer forum, it would be best to reach out to our QuickBooks Desktop Support to have this investigated. Agents have the necessary tools to check your account in a secure environment.

Here's how to reach us:

  1. Within your QuickBooks Desktop, click Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Enter a brief description of your concern then click Contact Us.
  3. To the correct support expert, we need to know what type of question you have. Give a brief description of your issue and click Continue.
  4. We’ll provide you a few options. You choose which one is best for you.

I'm including these articles for your future references:

Should you have additional QuickBooks concerns, please let me know. Have a good one.

Similar experience on 11/22/19 with the "Quickbooks Pro Advisory Team".  Call back number was [removed].  INTUIT OWES IT TO ITS CUSTOMERS to distribute this information, particularly the phone number.  In businesses with multiple users, it is likely that one will not recognize it for the fraud that it is and provide the caller access to the company file and all of the sensitive data in it.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I think I fell victim to a scam. An Indian guy called and said he found a problem with our company file with data loss. We ironically do and have reached out to Quickbooks recently. He remotely logged into my computer. He looked into Quickbooks for a while and then started running something under command prompt. That made me suspicious, so I Googled his number and found the website below. I immediately closed out of command prompt and the chat. I ran a virus scan and malware scan, but I didn’t see anything come up. I’m going to shut down my computer and unplug my computer from the Internet. I’m going to have an IT expert come in the morning and look it over. Beware!

I received a similar call yesterday, 12/3/19, from a gentleman with a middle eastern accent named "Savio". Sounds like a similar story everyone has shared. He honestly had me until he said he needed to access my computer and then the red flags went off. He gave me the number of [removed] to call him back on. I did not call him back.

Hello, @mbf1.

I appreciate you for sharing your experience with these phone fraudsters. This information will set as an early warning for other QuickBooks users.

To avoid these scam phone calls, we highly recommend using the Contact Support options inside the QuickBooks software.  You have three ways to contact us:

  • Message an Agent
  • Talk to a Specialist

Meanwhile, I'd strongly suggest contacting our Customer Care Team so a formal complaint would be filed against those people who keep on calling you.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click on the Contact us link.

It just happened to me, too. Claimed there is a communication error with the server. I explained I've been using QB with no issue and she was very persistent. I asked her to email me info and the call ended.

Be careful - scammers will ghost numbers and the number they called from matches an intuit customer support number.

We received a call today from [removed] claiming to be Quickbooks. They said the card on file was declined. This seemed odd to me since I know that our account is up to date. I logged in to our account and checked and all is up to date, called and verified with the REAL Quickbooks as well, and they did not call. Beware, the scammers are at it again.

I hope you're doing great today, LYNN25.

You did the right thing on being vigilant and cautious after receiving that random call. We only contact our customer if they request a callback from us.

I've got you an article to learn how to handle suspicious calls or emails from parties claiming to be affiliated with Intuit: Reporting fraudulent calls or emails.

I appreciate your contribution in raising awareness to other QuickBooks users about this fraudulent acts.

Thanks for joining the thread, @jj virani.

I appreciate you taking the time to inform others about the calls you've been receiving over the past three days. I wanted to share some information about QuickBooks calls for you and others.

The only time QuickBooks Support contacts you is when you go through the help menu and select the Get a callback option. The call usually comes through as an 800 number that tells you the call is recorded for security purposes. Then you're connected with one of our agents who won't ask for any personal information to access your account. If you haven't requested a callback from QuickBooks directly, I wouldn't call the number they provided solely for security reasons.

Feel free to comment below if you have any more questions or concerns. Take care!

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Received 2 calls in the last month about upgrading and renewal.  Last phone # was [removed].  They were asking for our credit card #.  The person was not able to answer any questions and said the last 4 of our credit card #### was declined.  It just so happens that i have a list of our cards (even expired ones) and it wasn't one of ours so I knew right away it was fraud.  BEWARE~

Hello there, @HonzBigB

Thanks for sharing your encounter with the scam call. I'm here to share how these fraud calls from parties claiming to be affiliated with Intuit can be prevented.

As mentioned by the previous reply on this thread, outbound calls from a QuickBooks representative shouldn't ask for any personal information. Additionally, you'll only be called if you request a call back through the Help function within your account. If you keep receiving this kind of call, I suggest reporting this information via email.

For further details on reporting the phone number, you can refer to this article: Protect Yourself from Tech Support Scams.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I just had guy with an Indian accent telling me that our account was showing a 202 error and that our credit card account information for billing needed updated. He wanted me to give him the information over the phone and I refused. I went online and updated, but he told me he was still getting an error after refreshing? I told him when I saved it everything went through. Then I asked him to tell me what I would see on my end to show this error.  He told me he would get back to me.  Is this a scam.

Thanks for sharing this with us, @dggrammie.

From what you described, it sounds like that wasn't a valid phone call from us. Good to know there's no credit card information shared over the phone. To prevent this, we recommend not including any private information about your account. Refrain from posting your personal/business phone numbers and email addresses here in the Community and other public forums.

You can report this incident to us by providing the details of the caller to spoof@intuit.com. Just check out this article for the steps and details: Recognize and report suspicious emails (Phishing). Rest assured, everything will get taken care of from there.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

ALERT:  I have received 2 calls from CA numbers in the last week. [removed], and then [removed].  The 1st call went to my voicemail, they left message, stating their first name, Kelly with Intuit, and as our Quickbooks advisor, and she has a couple of questions on our Quickbooks account.  I knew this was bogus, because QB/Intuit have never called me for a vague reason unsolicited.  They have only called me with I submitted a help request.  I called the number back and let them know I had not called them, and they would have to prove who they are before I disclose ANY information about our company.  She never returned my call.  However, I got another call today from the 2nd number I listed, and I answered this one.  It was a man, and I do not remember his name.  He said he was responding to an inquiry that I made, regarding payroll.  I knew that was a lie.  And I let him know that.  He tried to continue asking me about who we use for payroll, and why we are using QB.  I told him I absolutely did not call and that I would not give any information.  And I had to aggressively end the call.  BEWARE.  The other thing that concerns me is that they had my number and knew I am with QB/Intuit.  I am now concerned about Quickbooks security of my information and the information about our company.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I also just received a call from Quickbooks Support Team.  Unfortunately, he seemed legit after asking him some pertinent questions.

He also said it was about some downloads that were not being installed and he advised me to go to Help>Update Quickbook Desktop and update the files.  Some files were not being downloaded and some errors were present.  He had me reset the update and try that and some files downloaded but one did not and there were two errors.  He asked me to download Logmein123 and set up remote control for him.  Unfortunately, I did this.

The conversation and trials went on for anothe 20 minutes and finally he said I needed another service that he downloaded which I could purchase for $399 dollars.  That's when I got suspicious and ended the conversation and he warned that Quickbooks could not guarantee that problems would not  happen to my software if I did not buy this extra service.

Now I'm not sure I'm even talking to the real Inuit support online.   I have changed the password for my Admin.  Anything else I should do?

Welcome to the Quickbooks Community, Dave Modisette. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. That was a brilliant move to change your Admin password. I suggest that you uninstall the LogMeIn software. Just a friendly reminder, Quickbooks doesn't do outbound calls. The only time we will call you is if you request a call back to fix a situation. I encourage you to report this incident, including the caller number, to spoof@intuit.com, as my colleague mentioned in the thread. This way, our team can investigate this matter. If you need to reach our actual team for assistance, here's how for Quickbooks Desktop:

  1. Go to the Help menu, then click Quickbooks Desktop Help or press the F1 key.
  2. Hit the Contact Us button, as seen in the display.
  3. Enter a brief description of the problem.
  4. Select Continue.
  5. Choose which method you would like to connect. The options will be chat or our call back feature.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. I'll be around. Take care and be safe.
