Can I move a new client, who added me as a standard user, into my practice?

Their QBO company is showing up as completely separate, and I have no access to Accountant Tools from there.

Yes, you can move them into your practice, dls954.

When the client adds you as a Standard User, it treats you as a regular user and not a connected accounting firm. This is why you're unable to access any accounting tools.

To regain access, the client must invite you as their Accountant. They can follow these steps to send you the invitation:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Manage users.
  2. Select the Accountants or Accounting Firms tab.
  3. Select Invite firm.
  4. Enter the accountant's email address or their firm's user ID.
  5. Click Send the invitation.

Once you receive the email invitation, you'll have access to their QuickBooks Online Company. I'll share this article for more details: Invite accountant users.

Thank you! I suspected this, but I was hoping for a less disruptive solution.

Hello dls954!

I’m glad my colleague was able to help! I understand it would be great if there were a more seamless way to resolve this without requiring the client to resend an invitation. However, the Accountant role is the key to unlocking all those tools in QuickBooks Online.

A little tip that might help: when walking your client through sending that Accountant invitation, you can let them know that it won’t affect their experience, and it’s a quick adjustment on their end. Once you're connected properly, it'll make working on their account way more efficient for both of you moving forward.

If you bump into any hiccups or have more questions about the process, feel free to pop back into the Community. We're always here to lend a hand!

Take care, and happy accounting!
