I have 3 items that need to be merged. I did the first two into one, now want to merge the last one, but nothing happens when I click OK.
All details are aligned, tax codes etc. are all OK, it just won't merge. Even tried it the other way around as I can always change the name of the remaining... it won't merge
Hi jaapkrijger,
You can merge more than two items, given that they have the same type. If the items don't have sub-items, however, you're still unable to merge them, let's run some troubleshooting steps.
To start with, let's re-sort the item list:
If the same thing happen, let's perform the verify and rebuild steps:

None of those suggestions worked.
Have played around, made a bunch of new items, merged without issues.
Replicated the scenario with another couple of items I need to merge, no issues.
Seems it is just one particular item that refuses to merge completely. It won't merge into another item, it won't have other items merge into it. Got well over 1,000 posts on it, so not really want to delete and redo....
There must be another way around this. I tried exporting all transactions via excel to iff, and re-import under the item that is supposed to remain.... QB tells me it imported, but no transactions were updated anywhere... so where it imported to???? Nobody knows.
Hello, jaapkrijger.
I appreciate you for letting me know about the steps you've taken to resolve this.
The Intuit Interchange Format (.IIF), shows the number of list and transactions that both failed and was successfully imported. QuickBooks provides a new.IIF file of the failed transactions, along with the descriptions of errors found. Let's also ensure QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release and you meet the system requirements.
Also, I like to add the lists and transactions you can import and its limitation.
To learn more about the import and export of IIF files. Please see these articles:
If the problem persists, you can also repair QuickBooks Desktop to fix any damaged components in the software. Or you may reach out to our Customer support team, they can initiate a screen sharing session to help you get to a resolution quickly.

I've tried all suggestions, nothing worked.
I manually merged the items. The one to be discarded is now empty, took 4 hours.
Upon trying to delete the item, guess what... it refuses, yet there is not a single transaction in it's history.
What on earth could be wrong here?

Am not going to call the support team, sorry. From the other clients it's obvious that I'd just be wasting resources.
As I've reported the problem, I believe a moderator with technical knowledge will be able to assist. If not, let it be. The item with an attitude is now inactive so only bothers me on stock adjustment as for some unknown reason, you insist on listing every item, inactive or not, on that list and we can't exclude them....
Your sentiment is very much understandable if you refuse to reach out to our support team, jaapkrijger.
But I'd still recommend contacting our customer support so they check the issue further. On the other hand, we'll share this post with our engineering team to further investigate any issue with item merging.
In the meantime, we'd love to offer a suggestion to get the old item deleted. Sometimes transactions may remain that don't appear when looking at the item. You can locate them by pressing Ctrl+F or Cmd+F(Find) and searching for the item, then looking for transactions that may still be attached.
In case you still encounter any trouble merging items in the future, don't hesitate to reach out to us, it will help us to further troubleshoot and collect more data on the issue.
Tried the find, didn't report anything. I guess it's just a different kind of issue.
