Change starting check number in QBD

Hi,

I recently created a new checking account in QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021. A week later my checks arrived and they start at #1101, yet QuickBooks is defaulting to check #1.

How can I change the starting check number in QuickBooks so that it matches my actual check number?

Thank you,

Change starting check number in QBD

As you enter a new check, enter the desired check number and QB will start counting from that point.

What if it doesn't? I enter the new number, save and close and it defaults to the previous (wrong) sequence the next time I go to write a new check.

Do  you mean that when you use the Write Checks window to create a new check, not marked Print Later, and you enter a check number, and then close and reopen the Write check window, the number isn't +1 from the check just created?

If so, what happens when you try the same thing but click Save & New on the Write Checks window?

Also, what version-year of QuickBooks Desktop are you using?

I appreciate you for connecting with the QuickBooks Community, @manthony95. QuickBooks reverting to a previous sequence when you write a new check can be resolved by updating your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to the latest version. I will guide you through this process.

You are taking the correct approach by following the steps provided by BigRedConsulting. However, since the problem continues, we can update your QBDT version. Updating your software can help resolve these issues, which enhances stability and updated features that improve your overall accounting experience.

After updating your desktop version, let's utilize the Verify and Rebuild Data to check if this is a data-related issue. This process helps identify and correct errors or damaged data within your QuickBooks company file.

To get started, let's create a backup copy of your company file. This backup allows you to restore your original data and reverse changes if necessary.

Once done securing a backup copy, kindly proceed to these steps:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Hover over Utilities.
  3. Select Rebuild Data.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the data rebuild process.

Just in case you want to print checks in the future, here's an article you can refer to for detailed steps: Create, modify, and print cheques in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you need clarification or further assistance entering the check number, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are here to make things easier and assist you every step of the way. Have a great day!
