Crashes on Sonoma

I got really concerned from this thread but...

Installed macOS Sonoma 14.0 today on my m1 Pro MBP. Quickbooks Desktop Mac 2021V20.0.12R13.2 seems to run fine. I created a couple of invoices and printed them.

What's NOT supposed be working?

I have an iMac 2019 & a MB Pro and it doesn’t work on either of them. The program hangs until you force quit it.

macOS Sonoma 14.0, QuickBooks Desktop Mac 2021 V20.0.12 R13.2 (Build 1060)

Same old story, Intuit seems to have long since decided it doesn't like Mac users. Not sure why.

Anyway, I upgraded to Sonoma like others here but was surprised and not surprised QuickBooks was broken. I think it's the same bug that has plagued QuickBook for Mac thru a number of past macOS and QB versions, having to do with the Home Page, especially the Company Snapshot view.

Here's what I think works...

  • Quit/Force Quit QuickBooks
  • Back up your data file
  • Back up  ~/Library/Preferences/com.intuit.QuickBooks2021.plist
  • Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.intuit.QuickBooks2021.plist
  • Launch QuickBooks directly from the /Applications folder (don't open an existing file)
  • In the Open dialog select Sample Files > Sample Product (or Sample Service)
  • At this point QuickBooks will beachball, so Force Quit
  • Relaunch QuickBooks from the /Application folder
  • QuickBooks should now partially work in the Sample Product file
  • Quit QickBooks
  • Open your own data file, it should now mostly work
  • DO NOT try to open the Home Page, this will crash QuickBooks!
  • Use ribbon or menu bar to navigate

HTH, YMMV,

-Max

U must be a unicorn, lol.  Running QB 20.0.12.1060 R13.2 on MacBook Pro M2 Max w/Sonoma 14.0.  You can run the app, but as soon as you open a company file, even the sample ones, the app freezes and it shows "Not Responding" in Activity Monitor. I checked all the logs (/var/log) (~/Library/Logs/QuickBooks/) and nothing provides any kind of feedback to troubleshoot this.

This worked for me. Thanks!

Ah that’s not a working program in my opinion.

Not a working program or solution -- just a workaround to get back in until a permanent solution (patch) is released.  Have a good night!

Ah, what I think is happening is that just the "Home Page" window is what's messed up under Sonoma. Since I never use the Home Page, my company file was not left there on last close and works fine for me. If you never select the Home Page, all seems to work fine.

Unfortunately, I already did the update and found out this was a problem only when my Quickbooks did not work at all.  I am starting to work with customer service. I find this unacceptable as companies rely on ready access to their company information.

I have the same issue.  Apparently QB is not compatible with Sonoma.  Unfortunately, I found out only upon trying to open my QB after the installation. It does not work at all.  I am starting to work with customer support.  I cannot open my company's files at all.

It will not open at all.  It goes on a spin wheel function and does not stop.  In speaking to customer support, apparently they are not compatible.

I hope you told them that is a totally worthless answer! Are they EVER going to get it to work? I am absolutely LIVID.

Ok, do you just use the program menu bar?

I spoke with an Intuit / Quickbooks Mac support rep in Kentucky this morning and she assured me that they were aware of the problem and definitely working on a patch for update to the application and that it should be available in 24 to 48 hours. Fingers crossed!

Do I have better odds by buying a lottery ticket? I was just looking at QB alternatives.

Sonoma is no longer Beta but quickbooks 2019 is still crashing when opening a company file.  Even after erasing all the plist files and re-installing it is still happening.  How can we get this fixed?

According to Apple, you need to wipe your computer (and restore a pre-Sonoma backup) in order to return to the Ventura operating system.

I have QB 2019 as well, with the same problem as everybody else. I looked into returning to the Ventura OS. Apple said the only way to do it is to wipe your computer, then install a pre-Sonoma backup. Rather than going through that, I'm gonna wait. In the meantime, I used Adobe to edit all my last month invoices in order to bill my clients for October. Once QB is fixed, I'll need to go in and enter everything I handled outside the system. What a mess.

I can attest that my Quickbooks WORKS on my M1 MacBook Pro but does NOT WORK on my M2 Mac Studio. I upgraded my MacBook to test all of my apps and everything worked fine. I updated my Mac Studio and I got the same problems everyone posted in this thread. Overnight I downgraded my Mac Studio to Ventura (erase and reinstall). I will upgrade it to Sonoma on Jan 1 after using the holidays to possibly move to another accounting platform. To be honest, after looking around, they are all subscription and are not that different in price. This is the new reality that we live in.

As StevenKansasCity mentioned, the team is aware and working on a solution/patch.  (I have also heard this through my own channels that I have with Intuit.)

Sonoma was being tweaked and changed up until the VERY end with a new developer RC build just DAYS prior to the release this week, so please allow Intuit some grace and time to get a solution tested and publicly available.  (Software companies will generally wait until the final release is available before verifying and validating their software is compatible - Intuit is no different.)

While things could always be better and a DO NOT UPGRADE notice should have been posted, it wasn't and sadly many of us were bitten.

Just please be patient and I'm sure that we will see something soon...

While this issue plagues me on both my M1 and M2 systems, there is DEFINITELY some differences between Sonoma on both these platforms.  (I have some other software that runs fine on the M1, but not on the M2.)

That very well may be. If you stay in the QuickBooks environment, then all you're left with is QuickBooks Online. For what I need, that will cost me $100 per month where as the desktop subscription is half of that (more or less). I also was looking at other similar tools and as you point out they are all subscriptions with a web GUI. I'm all for web GUIs when they make sense, but not so keen when there's a better way.

Maybe you should have issued a notice to your company proactively instead of telling people DO NOT UPGRADE in a form where it is already broken!

Crashes on Sonoma

Hello everyone.

I understand how important it is to resolve this issue, especially if you're having trouble opening the company file. Let me explain to you some information about installing QuickBooks Desktop 2019 for Mac on a new MacOS computer.

Keep in mind that QuickBooks Desktop 2019 is no longer supported, it may or may not be fully optimized or compatible with the Sonoma MacOS, which could be causing the crashes you're experiencing. This is because as new operating systems are released, our product developers and engineers focus their updates and optimizations on the most recent versions.

In this case, I recommend considering upgrading to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop that is compatible with Sonoma MacOS. The newer versions often include bug fixes, stability improvements, and support for the latest operating systems. If you're interested to know more about the new features in the recent version, see this link: What's new in QuickBooks Mac Plus 2023.

Feel free to let me know if you have other QuickBooks Desktop Mac concerns. Keep safe!
