When I am in the last stage to process my payroll I am getting an error message that states: {"Either the Payroll Liabilities account, or its parent account, is an inappropriate account type. Please check the account types in your company's Chart of Accounts"}

Error with Parent Liability Account when processing payroll

Hi there, dowdyd12.

I've checked on your issue and identified that we have on-going investigation (INV-53367) about the error you're receiving.

As a workaround, I suggest opening your payroll liabilities account and change it to other current liabilities. Also, I recommend contacting our payroll support so you'll be added to the notification list.

Here's how you can contact our payroll support:

1. Click the Help(?) icon at the top right to open the QB Assistant window.

2. Press the Talk to a human menu and enter the issue/topic.

3. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the process.

4. Choose Chat with us or Have us call you.

You can check this article for the list of payroll reports available in QuickBooks Online to view your payroll and employees: Run payroll reports.

Feel free to reach back to us if you'll need assistance in dealing with your payroll tasks. Just leave a reply below.

Neither of these solutions help as they were already completed prior to contacting qbo support.

I was unable to complete my payroll this week due to the negligence on QuickBooks end. I have contacted them 11 times and am still being told that this is an “on going issue”

I had already done this prior to contacting qbo support.

I was unable to process payroll for my employees last week due to the negligence of QuickBooks.

I’ve called in 11 times and am still being told “this is an ongoing issue”

I had the same issue and am unable to process payroll for March 15th

Quickbooks isn't treating this with the urgency it needs.

I am stunned that they have not resolved this yet and we have to manually write paper checks and FedEx to employees

I'm also experiencing this error. I've already had to contact support 4 times today for various payroll issues.. this is getting ridiculous. Definitely planning to change all of my payroll clients to another payroll platform ASAP.

I am having this same issue with one employee. We're going on our second payroll in a row I cannot process her payroll. I've talked on the phone with multiple individuals and spoken on chat with even more. The customer service I've received has been horrible. NO ONE has been able to help me, and I'm desperate. Any advice?

This isn't the kind of service we want you to experience, KaylaEH.

Not to worry, I have all the steps you'll need to successfully process payroll.

if you're using a standalone payroll, I'd suggest following the steps below to resolve this error:

  1. Go to URL: https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/reportv2token=ACCT_LIST&show_logo=false&edited_section[…]ny&footer_cu...
  2. This will open the account list report, displaying the 'hidden' chart of accounts within the standalone payroll.
  3. Find payroll liability account, then click on it.
  4. Change from Expense to Other Current Liabilities and then click on Save.
  5. Once done, run payroll, enter adjustment checks, etc.

If you're using a different payroll service, let's access your account using a private window. This helps us determine if there's an issue with the browser. Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + P

Once signed in, process payroll. If you're able to do so, let's clear the cache of your browser. This helps improves QuickBooks performance.

If private browsing doesn't work, I'd recommend using different browsers. They'll provide you the best and most secure experience with QuickBooks. For more details, see this article: System Requirements For QuickBooks.

Additionally, I encourage running payroll reports in QuickBooks. This helps you view useful information about your business and employees.

I'm always here if you need any more help processing payroll in QuickBooks Online. Have a great day!

Error with Parent Liability Account when processing payroll

ERROR  "Either the Repayment account, or its parent account, is an inappropriate account type. Please check the account types in your company's Chart of Accounts."  ERROR

My accountant has reached out to Quickbooks and this is what was said:

"james Carlou E on May 4 at 11:39

Okay we found out that this error we are experiencing is actually a known issue on our end.  Our system engineers are already aware of this issue and we're working on fixing the said issue as soon as possible.  I already aded your account on the priority list as one of the affected customer to make sure your account will be fixed ASAP."

What is the status of this being fixed.  I have had to manually run payroll for 2 weeks.  I need to pay taxes, 401K, etc.. If this can not be resolved, I will need to find another payroll service.

Please advise with status.

Can you please provide that URL link again.  I keep getting error.  I spent over 12 hours on the phone with QB and two weeks later no resolution.  I will need to look for another payroll service.

Getting same error for the last two weeks.  Countless hours on the phone with QB no resolution.  Please help.  We are in July and same issue is still here.  What is that URL for hidden chart of accounts? I have standalone payroll, this makes no sense at all.  I had one of your support people tell me to pay in cash!

We're here to ensure this gets taken care of, NOPAYROLL1. Let me assist you.

The URL is no longer available since the investigation is already closed. I'll share another way to fix this.

We'll have to ensure the payroll is mapped to their correct account types. Once they're incorrectly linked, you'll encounter the error.

If you're still encountering the same issue after checking the accounts, I suggest reaching out to our payroll support. I know you've called in before. However, they have more tools and resources to better check your concern. You can follow Rasa-LilaM's steps on how to get in touch with them.

You can also take note of their support hours so you can immediately get hold of an agent.

We're available 24/7 if you have other payroll concerns. Feel free to visit the Community any time. Take care!

THANK YOU! Unfortunately all the steps were done and still no solutions.  At this point I am looking for another payroll provodor and suggest others don't waste their time calling your payroll support as it's only a colossal waste of time,   I spoke with 5 people with no resolutions and been waiting for supervisor call fro 12 days.

Glad to know the investigation is closed. I have been having this issue all month and the payroll support team had no idea how to fix it. Quickbooks is a train wreck

@NOPAYROLL1 Did you figure it out? I sat on a lovely 2 hour call with support and while on the call figured out a fix for myself. Can you tell me the name of the liability account that is causing the error? Not the account type... just what you named it

@midsouth elevator Have you resolved this yet? after a 2 hour call with QB today and no solution, I figured it out myself while waiting on support. Can you tell me the name of the account you are getting the error with? not the account type.. just what you named it on your COA

Did anyone ever figure out a solution to this problem?  After being on the phone with QB Support for 50 minutes, I was told I needed to change a long list of expense accounts to Assets.  When I explained that didn't make sense from an accounting perspective, she just said "well that is what you will have to do in order to run payroll."  I asked to speak to a supervisor or someone who understands the accounting impact and she said "there is nobody here higher than me."  I have no choice but to switch payroll companies.

@jreynolds I am having this issue and cannot find a permanent solution. Last payroll it worked one I got rid of the word loan from the account description and deduction description on the employee. Then this week it did not work again. Quickbooks sat on the phone with me for 2 hours and the only solution they could find was to call these accounts assets instead of liabilities. technically its fraud because these deductions are not assets, they are basically garnished wages. but sadly enough it worked. yayy for quickbooks, the only solution was to fraudulently record the data.

I received the following error: "Either the Payroll Liabilities account, or its parent account, is an inappropriate account type. Please check the account types in your company's Chart of Accounts."

I had JUST changed am employee deduction account (it was a 401(k) loan repayment account) on the COA from a current asset to a current liability, so I knew that must be the problem.

It seems there are certain employee deductions that MUST be either an asset or a liability.

I changed the 401(k) loan repayment account back to a current asset, re-adjusted the payroll accounting settings, and then the payroll processed just fine.

It seems ridiculous that this is how QuickBooks Payroll is set-up, but that's at least how I was able to fix it.

Error with Parent Liability Account when processing payroll

After being baffled by the same error yesterday I contact QB Support today...I am responding so that others reading this forum know to be aware that this error is still happening and not resolved!!

I was on the phone with support for an hour, and their final instruction was for me to coordinate calling back in with our accountant to review how all payroll accounts are assigned. I had already explained several times that as the primary bookkeeper I was aware of why our accounts were setup the way they were, and confused as to why they had not caused this error before when we ran our last several payrolls? The Tech did attempt to help me reassign various accounts, but that still did not resolve the error. I asked what they recommended next and they sent me a link for an outside payroll service to calculate taxes for us and we could enter paycheck history manually later, until we sorted out our COA. I have been working with our accountant reassigning the accounts and it still has not resolved the error as of yet...

Then my accountant and I found this forum and I am amazed that if there was an 'internal investigation' going on earlier in the year that it still has not been resolved all these months later! This is not a small issue!!

Because of this error we were unable to complete our payroll on time for our employees, unable to submit 401k and payroll taxes, not to mention the backlog of other tasks set aside to deal with this.

We switched from the desktop version to online during last month and have had issues from the start. Our owners are considering if we want to continue using this software service.
