Hello there,@chrissa2.

When you set up your company in QuickBooks Online, it automatically creates certain default accounts in your chart of accounts based on the business entity you selected. Additionally, other special accounts will be generated when you take specific actions or enable certain features in your QuickBooks settings.

It is important to know that not all default accounts in the chart of accounts can be modified. We will guide you through understanding which default accounts each business entity receives, and identify which accounts are editable, mergeable, or can be made inactive.

Note: Should you need to eliminate an account from your chart of accounts, find out how to deactivate accounts you no longer use.

For more details, you can refer to this article which will help you identify which default or special accounts in QuickBooks Online can be deleted, edited, or merged: Manage default and special accounts in your QuickBooks Online chart of accounts.

However, inactive accounts for customers or vendors change status if they have an open balance, making them active. If there is no balance associated with a name, it will be moved to inactive status (deleted).

If none of the accounts mentioned in the article can be deleted, I recommend we perform some troubleshooting steps. Start by signing in to your QBO account using a private or "incognito" browsing mode. Here are the shortcut keys for the most common browsers:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If this works, let's clear the cache and cookies. If it doesn't, use another supported browser. This process plays the same role as clearing the cache from your web browser, which helps us start again with a clean slate.

Additionally, financial reports provide a concise overview of your business. In QuickBooks Online, you can generate reports that help track your business performance and inform decision-making: Run a report in QuickBooks Online.

Additionally, you can access the valuable support of QuickBooks Live Experts to enhance your financial management. These professionals offer customized help, simplifying complex accounting tasks and ensuring compliance with regulations. Whether you require expert advice, help with tax preparation, or comprehensive financial management, our experts are available to assist you in making well-informed decisions confidently.

I'm only one reply away if you require further assistance with handling your chart of accounts concerns in QuickBooks Online. Have a good one!
