I have a service that I need to change to Non-inventory.

I am changing a few of my services in QBO to Non-Inventory items. All the items I wanted to change, changed with no issues except one. It will not allow me to change the service to non-inventory. What could cause this issue? Screenshot is attached.

Hello there, @DanW1.

Thank you for taking the time posting in the Community. Allow me to help share some insight about changing your service item type to non-inventory.

You can edit the Service item you created and change its type. However, if you're trying to replace the type of the default Service (Sales) item, you'll get this error message.

You have the option to rename it, but you're not able to modify its type. I recommend you create a new non-inventory item instead to get you back on track. I've attached an article about this for additional reference: Change Product and Service types.

That should point you in the right direction today. The Community is always here if you need more assistance with Product and Service in QuickBooks Online. I'll be delighted to be your guide once again. Wishing you and your business continued success.

I haven't found any difference between Non-Inventory and Service type items.

I am curious why you want to make the change?

I have a service that I need to change to Non-inventory.

We are integrating mHelpDesk CRM/Scheduling software into our business. The software syncs with QBO and  I needed to change the type because mHelpDesk treats the type "Service" as an hourly billing charge. We charge flat rate for services and so I had to change the items to type "Non-inventory" to get the billing charges to work correctly.

It's good to see you again, DanW1,

Thanks for providing more details.

In QuickBooks Online, there are pre-created accounts for Products and Services like Sales and Hours that cannot be changed.

The error message “You cannot change the product and service type for this item“ happens if this item you’ve been trying to change is the pre-created accounts.

To help us resolve the problem, you can create a new item for Rad Survey as a Non-Inventory type.

If you have further questions in creating Non-inventory items, please feel free to reach back out. I'd be happy to answer it for you. Have a great day!

The easiest thing would be to deactivate that service item and create a new non-inventory item. You may be running into trouble because you are trying to change a default QB item. You can map the new non-inventory account to the same income account as the old service item. Just be sure to rename the service item something like "xService Fee" when you make in inactive so that your new non-inventory item can be named "Service Fee" without a problem.

I have used mHelpDesk with QB. One thing to watch out for is making sure all the payments and invoices import. I regularly ran into issues with invoices not importing and it was usually a service or inventory item that got created in mHelpDesk that wasn't already set up in QB. If the invoice still won't import after adding the new service/inventory item, then you may have to manually enter it in QB. For the majority of invoices, the import worked just fine. The problem happened when my client would make new items in mHelpDesk.
