I Was Forced to Upgrade to the $150/month Pro or Pro Trial Version of QBO!

I have two hours to get my work done today. I log in and am met with a pop-up that says we have been selected to try the new QBO Pro. I am used to these kinds of pop-ups and am looking for the "Dismiss" button. But, my two options are "Upgrade Now" or "Start 3-Month Trial Upgrade." I am just furious. I get on a chat window and a phone call to see how to dismiss this pop-up so I can get my work done. The chat window has me clearing caches and opening logins in different browsers. Nothing works--everything goes back to the ad. On the phone, the rep explains to me there is absolutely NO WAY to bypass the screen, but she will assist me in upgrading and then immediately downgrading to my current plan. I express concern that I will have data problems and that I will be charged for something on the card they have on file. She assures me neither of those things will happen. She also said we were selected because our list of accounts is at 180 and the max for our current plan is 250. It is upsetting to see them putting arbitrary caps on Online features that did not exist in the Desktop version. So, HERE'S THE PROCESS: Click the free trial button and then go to your dashboard. Enter the following URL into your browser bar:

https://c6.qbo.intuit.com/app/changeplan (you should be just changing the last word to "changeplan" Then, select your plan (mine was the already overpriced $60 plan) which she assured me matched exactly the plan I had already been on.  The first time I did it, I got a 404 error, but we started over and this time I was able to downgrade back to my normal plan.  Then, you have to click on a series of "Next" buttons as you are forced to tour the product you have no interest in. Again, this pattern of treating loyal, long-term customers more like hostages is INSANE, insulting and upsetting. My hands are actually shaking. This makes the company appear to only care about bottom line and big clients. I am a part-time bookkeeper working for a three person firm that is downsizing. I shouldn't be forced to upgrade to a $150/month plan and spend 1/2 hour figuring out what the heck is going on just to access my books. My biggest regret from the last year in my life is upgrading our company to Quickbooks Online. Thank goodness the phone rep was really professional-thank you to her for keeping her cool. I asked her to relay my concerns to whoever is making these selfish decisions. I'm sorry to all the other bookkeepers out there that had to go through this experience, too. Please, can I get some support to let corporate know that small firms have lost all faith and trust in the Quickbooks company?

The more people that revert back to or go to Desktop at $200 for a 3 year supported product the sooner they might get the message.

There is plenty of support and help to get you back into the Desktop realm. Nobody I know of is happy with the usage limits and supposedly anyone with more than the limits before next week was to be grandfathered in.

Another option for those on the west coast or willing to travel - buy 1 share of Intuit stock, itself overpriced at 45 times earnings ($256 +/-)  [makes apple look like a bargain - 15 times earnings] and attend the next shareholder meeting and do what you have to do to be able to speak and tell off the board.

Yes it's obnoxious.

At least it will automatically revert back.  Just have to endure 30 days of the shrieking monkey

I was forced into doing this today as well for one of my clients. Am seriously considering going back to desktop.

Same thing happened to me!  Thank you for the url code to downgrade.  If you just try and downgrade from the dashboard without it it gives you a pop-up telling you to call customer service (so they can sell you into the upgraded plan I'm sure).    And you were right, the first time gave me an error (hoping I'd give up) but the second time worked.  However, what happened is that when I downgraded it turned the "track class" setting to "off" and none of my classes would show.  We figured this out after over an hour on the chat with a rep.  So if your classes ever disappear go look at the settings they may have been reverted to "off".  I honestly think that was probably a ploy on their part as well.

I was also forced to go through this very aggravating process yesterday.  It is totally incomprehensible to me that Intuit would do this to their customers.  The ill will created by this maneuver will last a long time!  The next question in my mind is, what happens at the end of your "trial period."  Do you automatically just start being billed at the (ridiculously) higher rate, or will there be an option to go back to your prior plan without having to call support?

Just a note to those who use classes and divisions, once we got back to our prior version the classes and division were unavailable and had to be turned back on.  My client panicked when they were gone thinking we had lost them.  They were all still there once they were turned back on.

I have a bookkeeping service business with approximately 120 clients.  I have a number of clients using QuickBooks online, but personally I have not found it to be user friendly.  After this I will absolutely not recommend the online version to anyone and will do my best to dissuade them from choosing it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, @SSandvik. I can provide clarification on the experience QuickBooks Online Advanced free upgrade.

This was launched to provide customers with a no-obligation and risk-free opportunity to try out QuickBooks Online Advanced. The trial is free of charge and your clients don't need to worry about being locked in. Once the trial is over, the QuickBooks Online subscription will automatically revert back to the previous version, unless the user specifically chooses to upgrade to Advanced.

Should any user wish to return to their QuickBooks Online Plus account before their trial ends, they can do so by contacting Support or by downgrading their account.  I'm including an article which covers this experience, as well as containing the steps for downgrading: Update on the QuickBooks Online Advanced free upgrade period.

I'm here if you should have any questions about this or anything else. The sharing of ideas and solutions is one of the many things that make the Community such a great place.

Are you going to credit each and everyone of your customers for the time that we have wasted because of this very unprofessional forced "trial upgrade"?  I personally want a free month of my standard service for free.

But why do I need to go through the hassle of trying a product that I don't want to try, or spend 10 minutes going into my settings and downgrading when I never wanted to upgrade in the first place?  This is extremely obnoxious, and just adds to every obnoxious thing that Intuit always does.  My only options are to "upgrade" for a discount for two months, not interested, or try the stupid 30 day trial that I don't want to try. Why can't I dismiss it??

To avoid that screen, I installed the app on my MacBook and before the forced try it screen popped up I clicked on "Banking" and it worked to avoid the screen.

We have over 200 clients in QBO and I experienced the same as you. I was told when the advanced first came out that no existing users would be forced to upgrade even if they were at or over the limit. What happens if you follow their instructions above is it makes the client look like they are a new client with no prior payment history. I too am very upset about the whole way this has been handled and have voiced my firm's opinion to our Intuit Rep.  What I am truly worried about is what is to come, that they will be forcing existing clients into the upgrade.

Very underhanded marketing scheme in my opinion and the marketing campaign needs to stop and apologies need to go out to clients and firms alike.

The fact that they are forcing people to try this version is ridiculous.

The insanity is only outmatched by the fact that the No option they give you is entirely misleading.

Not sure what their thought process here, but I think they need to reevaluate as soon as possible.

I left negative feedback with them and hope more do the same.

It took me hours, online and on the phone, but I found the best solution for me.  I found that their many price increases over the last several years have actually been forced upgrades.  But.... We had a choice and QuickBooks never told us.  I just down graded from approximately $60/month to $15!!!  So their dirty trick has saved me almost $550/year.

Hello everyone. I'd like to take a moment to thank you all for sharing your viewpoints.

Also, I'm glad that @raokindness has found the plan that best suits their business. The following article contains additional information on downgrading a subscription should anyone have questions or would like to refer to it in the future: Downgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription.

If anyone has questions about the experience QuickBooks Online Advanced free upgrade, I recommend the article that I linked earlier: Update on the QuickBooks Online Advanced free upgrade period.

I hope that everyone has a pleasant weekend ahead. The Community is always here, so please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

OP Question: I Was Forced to Upgrade to the $150/month Pro or Pro Trial Version of QBO!

Since Intuit QuickBooks say they care so much about customers and QBO users felt it was forced to upgrade from $60 plan to $150 plan, maybe they need to come out with an article like:
How To Free Downgrade QuickBooks Online Advanced Anytime. Period.

I Have already declined both the upgrade and the next day school deposit.... I have done this multiple times and still getting the offers and is slowing down my work.  Please turn it off!

This QBO product is quickly turning into garbage and I will not recommend it.

Your link to downgrade doesn't work. Multiple attempts results in the same "Something ins't right. Try again later." error message. This is ridiculous that people have to waste time fighting with this.

Greetings, @jenpcpa.

I'm determined to help you get to the bottom of that error message without a moment's delay. To clarify, are you receiving that error when you click the article link that @David-212915 provided for Downgrading, or when you add /changeplan to the URL and press enter as the instructions describe? For either method, I'd recommend clearing your browser cache and trying to load the page again.

Web-based platforms like QBO collect cache files (cookies) to save you time when loading repetitive data and images. These files can often become outdated or corrupted, causing issues like the one with the Downgrade page you're trying to load. Clearing them out usually resolves these issues, and here's how you can accomplish that in all supported browsers:

Clearing Temporary Cache Files

By doing this, you'll force QBO to load a fresh copy of everything it's loading. Please feel free to follow up with me right here in the Community, I want to make sure you're taken care of. Thanks for dropping in, I look forward to hearing from you again.

Not the link to the article. The link in the article that takes you to the "downgrade service" screen. It worked after I cleared cookies.

BUT, none of us in this thread should have to go through that.  Quickbooks has been slowly raising rates and bumping people up to higher plans for a while now. It's not right. I shouldn't have to go through all of this to stay on the plan I originally picked. We are looking for accounting software alternatives.

Fortunately, I'm a small bistro and I guess I will look into purchasing an alternative online accounting package. Too bad greed is the primary motivator for software moguls. I've been a loyal QuickBooks Customer since the 1990s. Thought this will be painstakingly timely, and something I'd rather not do. It appears in order to find personal peace of mind I must make a personal statement to myself and move on to another accounting software... Too bad, way too bad... :(
