Importing Journal Entries into Quickbooks Online

I understand that in quickbooks online I should be able to import journal entries from an excel or csv file.  Yet when I follow the instructions given here:

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-uk/import-or-export-data-files/import-journal-entries...

journal entry isn't available.

Importing Journal Entries into Quickbooks Online

Hello there, @SillyMookie.

Let me share with you some information about importing journal entries to QuickBooks Online.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) has multiple ways of importing bulk transactions. One of these is by using an Excel CSV file that's limited to deposits, checks, and payments. The option to import journal entries differ in the country/region of QuickBooks you're currently using. The instruction on the link you've added is actually for QBO UK versions.

For QBO US, you may consider using a third-party tool to import your journal entries. You can check for supported apps from the Apps menu or through this link: Find the right apps for your business.

I can see how importing journal entries would be beneficial to you and others as well. Rest assured our engineers never stop to develop QuickBooks and deliver the best experiences for all users. Hopefully, this will be included in the coming updates.

The feature is unavailable in QBO US version. Utilize the trial period of TPImporter to do so.

This is stupid. If it's available in another country, it should absolutely be no problem to enable it in the USA. Some of us actually care about out company data and don't want to have to share it with 3rd party apps after paying hundreds of dollars to use this software. Shame on you.

@Angelyn_T   why on Earth is the ability to import journal entries still not in the US version of QBO???  These posts were from late 2020 and it's almost June of 2021.  This has been in past versions of QB and I don't understand why it would be removed from the US version when it's available in other regions' versions.  You said you'd push this request to the development team and that was over six months ago.  Is Intuit a partner with one of the apps that will do this in the app store and that's why the answer being put to us is to use one of those?  The ability to import journal entries is standard across the board for accounting software, and it doesn't appear that it's a technical issue since it's currently operational in other regions' versions.  You would also think this ability would be part of the most expensive Online Advanced package which allows imports of other data.  Please give a meaningful answer about this.

Importing Journal Entries into Quickbooks Online

This just might just be the deal breaker for me. I don't want to manually enter my payroll information for 8 different classes, over 100 different lines. This is a must have with for online accounting these days. I should be able to import and export all my data. I was able to do this with my 25 year old desktop software that cost me only $150/year. I'm now paying over $3000 for my 4 companies. I thought Quickbooks was support to be the leader in small business software?

@MN_Mom1

Utilize an importer tool as I mentioned in earlier post. Otherwise, switch to QB Desktop with a one time license and deploy a private cloud if required. It costs less than $1000 for one user to manage 4 company files per year.

This does not seem like something that needs to be developed or sent to researchers or me to waste my time telling QBs for the 1,000th time that this is something that would be nice, since it is already developed and being used (just not in the US). Not sure the reasons QBs Online continues to make things so difficult. I am sure this will get the robotic response of how QBs is doing all they can, but that simply is not enough, especially when the capability already exists.

Dear Quickbooks, I am not in the US and I also do not have this feature. WHY? It has been raised since March 2020. It is unfair to deny your customers this feature when we used this feature on Quickbooks desktop before this. And to top it off, you cannot even put a tentative date to when it will be made available. What is really going on? I find it impossible to understand that such feature takes more than 1 year to develop.

How do users escalate our requests for software enhancements?  If importing journal entries is available in some regions, why not all?  Importing is such a common function in almost all software now, this should be a standard.

Hello,

I am also in desperate need of importing Journal Entries after selecting QuickBooks as my company's new accounting system this month. I absolutely need this ability, it is in every other accounting software. Please respond and let me know how this is possible, I cannot move forward with my large recurring journal entries without it.

Thank you.

@toddmitchell1

If you want still using QBO US version, you have to use a 3rd party tool to import JE.

https://transactionpro.grsm.io/qbo

Otherwise, consider switching to another accounting app.

@Fiat Lux - ASIA thank you. Good to know there is a work around even if using a paid external app. I really like QBO Advanced for the price and I have  my forecasts, classes and reporting all set. I just need to import a large number of journal entries, I do hope there is a built in tool for this soon. -Todd

To echo everyone else here, why is a simple (and very common) feature to import Journal entries still not available, or only available in some versions?    How much more can the community keep asking for this very common accounting feature?

Importing Journal Entries into Quickbooks Online

Hi Imok9,

I understand how convenient to have a feature that can import journal entries in QuickBooks Online. While this option is still unavailable, I'd recommend sending feedback to our Product Development Team. Please know that we always take our customers' requests and ideas into consideration when prioritizing feature development. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Click the Gear icon, then choose Feedback.
  3. Enter your comments and product suggestions.
  4. When you're done, click Next to submit feedback.

In the meantime, you'll want to consider visiting our QuickBooks App Market to find a third-party importer that best suits your business needs. You may follow these steps in searching the app within your QBO account:

  1. Sign to your company file.
  2. Select Apps from the sidebar menu.
  3. Go to the  Find Apps tab.
  4. Enter "import journal entry" in the search bar or click the Browse category button to filter the results.

Additionally, I encourage visiting our FAQ page to learn more about the data that you can import into the program.

You can always drop a comment anytime if you have other concerns or follow-up questions. Have a good one.

Feedback has been sent and sent and sent, but Quickbooks is NOT listening to its customer base.  Maybe it's time for a class-action against Intuit for failure to provide a basic, common accounting function within its QBO application. It's absolutely ludicrous for any QBO subscriber to have to pay for a side app in order to import journal entries into QBO.  This has been an issue almost two years at least - fix your product.

Good luck - been almost two years and still unable to import JEs into QB.  I suggest buying a different accounting product not owned by Intuit.

If the feature is critical for your business, you should migrate your data to another brand and purchase a 3rd party conversion service if required.

I have also submitted Feedback, more than once...  It seems the community requests for this will just go unanswered.   What makes this missing feature especiallly frustrating is that you will find tutorials and documentation widely available from Intuit that show how to import Journal entries, then when you try to follow those instructions, you find that the feature is not available in your region.   It seems pretty stupid, and we are left to assume this is a business arrangement with 3rd party importer tools and not a development issue.

I feel the same way, but the alternative products to QuickBooks cost much more, even after the third party app fees. We are happy with Transaction Pro and we can run a normal accounting operation, importing JEs as most decent sized companies do. We also imported some past bills, invoices and payments from our last system using Transaction Pro. I would look into it!
