Plus = subscription. You have to renew it annually. They have announced their plan to increase the price for renewal within this year. Otherwise, purchase a one time license for QBD 2021 Pro and request a refund for your QBD 2021 Pro Plus.
I’ll also mention that I received an email from Intuit regarding Quickbooks’ use of Internet Explorer. Since Microsoft will be ending support for IE, Intuit is suggesting everyone upgrade to Desktop 2022, that would use Edge. How conveeenient for Intuit.
You should avoid using QBD 2022 for the time being. If you need to upgrade your data from an older version, consider using the trial version for QBD 2020 and 2021 instead for up to 90 days or more. You can decide whether to purchase a one-time license for QBD 2021 or wait for the upcoming QBD 2023.

Funny you should say that because I have been charged the update fees every year even after canceling it. My current version is 2020 and for the last two years I have canceled my "subscription" for the upgrades because I do not need them and I have always used the DESKTOP version. I found that once again even after canceling my subscription that Intuit charged my card for the NEW LARGER annual fee. I ended up needing to call my credit card to BLOCK Intuit QB from making any more charges to it. I opened my desktop software and was told I only have 7 days to use my software unless I pay the bill. Yeah what customer service. I have been using QB since 2003 and I would be fine going all the way back to that version but I HAVE PAID for the Desktop version of a software and they are trying to block me from seeing my accounting data for everything since 2003........ Seems like a bizarre strategy to me. Kevin
Rose-A, I am using QB Pro 2020 and I have not been doing the upgrades. I spent a LONG LONG time on teh phone with QB staff trying to sort out this issue and thoguth it was resolved taht I can maintain my 2020 license and just no longer have access to support and so on as my annual payment covered. Turned out that they even still processed the "AutoPayment" after I had already canceled that and I had to contend with that through my CC Company. Wen I went back to open my software (which I have been a user starting in 2003) it said I only have access to my data for 7 days then I will no longer be able to access my data. I am using DESKTOP on my DESKTOP (nothing online) so what do I do to resolve that?
I think I did...... I do not understand why it only shows the 2009 & 2012 as active. I have paid for the updates for years and I have the original discs for 2003 other upgrades I downloaded the files. My program files show 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 & 2020. Prior to the 2012 update I do not think I told the software to leave my older versions on my computer. I am not sure what the "plus" means and when and why that was added to the program name because I have only ever wanted and used the desktop versions and not online versions. For a short time I did use the Payroll & Merchant services so that could have been when plus was added. I have tried canceling the annual subscriptions many times in the past and they just kept going through but with the huge cost increase I am no longer willing or able to pay for those updates and I do not need them.
Kevin
I think it's horrible that we are forced to go to a yearly subscription, Ive used Quickbook for 20+ years and think it's a slap in the face to have to purchase this every year now.
I've used Quickbooks Desktop for years. I'm a 1 man shop.
When "I AM READY" to upgrade to the next release, I pay for it and download it.
There is absolutely NO WAY I'll put my data in the Cloud.
I simply can't afford an annual subscription of $649 every year. It's looking like you've switched to subscription.
My question is if I upgrade to Quickbooks Desktop 2024, does it quit working a year from now? Or does that simply mean that you receive no further support and updates?
If it ceases to work, I can tell you, I'll begin shopping for another On-premise product that doesn't require an annual subscription...
I was told that 2022 would let you use it after the sub expired, but no access to support (which is horrific anyway), and no access to data backups. However, I've had multiple people come into my store lately indicating that QB has told them it WILL stop working for 2023 and later if you don't pay. It's obvious they are trying to muscle everyone into the cloud. I'm going to use my 2021 version until the wheels fall off, and I'm out too.
We appreciate your dedication to using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and understand your concerns about the recent changes to the software's subscription model, Camrhon. We would like to provide a clear explanation of what upgrading to QBDT 2024 entails and how it relates to the software's functionality and support.
When you upgrade to QBDT 2024, it does not mean that the software will cease to work a year from the upgrade. You can continue using the software as long as you pay the renewal. However, it's important to note that certain services such as payroll, live technical support, online backup, and online banking may no longer be available, and you will not receive the latest updates and support for the version you have upgraded to.
To further clarify, the upgrade to QBDT 2024 ensures that the core functionality of the software remains accessible to you. You will still be able to manage your financial data, view reports, and perform essential accounting tasks. However, the lack of the latest updates and support may impact the software's compatibility with evolving technology and changes in tax regulations.
We recommend that you consider the long-term implications of not receiving the latest updates and support, especially in relation to regulatory compliance and the evolving needs of your business. Exploring alternative on-premise products is a valid consideration, and we respect your decision to choose the software that best aligns with your business requirements.

Even though you said you were giving a clear response, you didn't. You said "When you upgrade to QBDT 2024, it does not mean that the software will cease to work a year from the upgrade. You can continue using the software as long as you pay the renewal." Does the software continue to work or not if one doesn't renew? Some of us don't need payroll, backup, or support. Please actually clarify.
"...You can continue using the software as long as you pay the renewal..."
Same question as @Pat MaGroin ... I have clients that are looking for options and are most likely going to leave QBs due to the gouging for QBDT and the subscription pricing/requirement. But if they did renew to upgrade to QBDT2024 and opted not to renew the subscription, will QBDT2024 continue to operate as the older QBDT versions did? Just no updates? Or if you do not have an active Account/Login, does the Software shut down? I understand the Company File is still on the Client's machine and does not go away. But useless to you without a way to access it.
It seems that Intuit has taken on the Boing strategies of profit over quality or Customer Service. Really a shame, but it isn't the first company to go down this path and it won't be the last. Curious to see who steps up and replaces them in the market.
Hi there, Pat MaGroin.
I appreciate you for coming back to the thread to ask for additional clarification regarding your concern. I'll provide further insights on how accessing your company file works with the current plan you had and ensure you can manage your data smoothly.
Please know that all 2021 versions of QuickBooks Desktop will be discontinued after May 31, 2024. This also means you won't receive critical security updates protecting your data starting June 1, 2024.
If you do not renew or upgrade your subscription from after the dates specified above, you may continue to open or access your company. However, you will no longer be able to record and process online transactions. That said, it is recommended that you upgrade to the latest version so you can continue to use the application effectively.
Additionally, if you choose the QBDT 2024 annual plan, it will be activated for one year and receive the latest critical security patches and updates. If you fail to make your payments on time, the system will automatically put your file on hold for one week. The timeframe begins on the date/time that the system discovers your subscription is inactive. Thus, you can only access your company's information for viewing purposes.
Lastly, you may read this artilcle if you need to see what features are included in the QuickBooks Desktop 2024 release and how you can use them to benefit your business: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2024.
If you have any additional concerns about managing your subscription in QuickBooks, please add them to this thread. I'm here to help you further, Pat MaGroin. Take care!
Thanks for the clarification. But this is why my clients are looking for other options.
If you don't need the payroll module, I have another option to consider. Contact me in private for details before you consider switching to another program.
@Pete_Mc and whomever else needs more clarification.
ChristyAnn, did clarify it better, but let me put it simply, as I'm an accountant and have been given information beyond what some normal public people get...
As soon as you kick the software over to Subscription Based (started with 2021 if you purchased the plus version, but everyone was forced over for the 2022 version), you then lost functionality when your subscription ran out (you have a little grace period), but then you'll only have VIEW access, you won't be able to record anything... That not only includes any all types of plug-ins you use, but any manual transactions you try to enter.
They have started phasing out Desktop. You can now only get Desktop Premier by calling them directly and asking them for it. After July 2024 they say they won't allow any new subscriptions on Desktop, unless you are purchasing "Enterprise" edition. That will likely be the last one standing soon.
Your 2024 licenses will continue to work in the future (until they decide they don't want to support it anymore, and as long as you continue to pay annually).
Its a really sad day in the Accounting world when Intuit decides to alienate their user base!!
All of my clients are brand new start-ups, and do not have money to pay the high price for Enterprise... and they absolutely hate QuickBooks Online! Therefore, when my business needs to continue to survive, we will be shopping around for other vendors that provide better service and products.
Yea, just making sure that the QB staff is clear on what happens. You let your subscription laps and you only have Read Only functionality.
It is not like the QBDT we've had for decades where QBDT still worked, just no support or updates. It is one of the main reasons I think some people are moving on. That and pricing.
Yeah, they are being purposely vague. I'm riding my 2021 until the wheels fall off and I'm out. The support isn't great, I don't need payroll, and I don't need them to backup my data. This is clearly a slow squeeze to get everyone online. They should just be transparent about it.
I would use a laptop that isn't connected to the internet that just runs your QB 2021 if that's your plan. However, eventually I'd suggest switching eventually, or lose all your access to a software bug, that refuses to run on any new Windows update.
I'm not sure if you're aware, but whenever you boot your computer up, QB is looking for updates, whether you've opened the app or not. You'll never know if Intuitive might download an update that could shut down the app's operability. With some of the obscure responses they're giving, I wouldn't put it past them.
I've been using QB since the early 90's. I even used one of the old DOS versions. For years I've provided bookkeeping services to several companies at a time, using an accounting version of QB. I think Intuit sees there's money to be made by forcing us to separately sign each of those companies to a subscription.
The last couple of months I've been looking at an app (strangely enough) called Bookkeeper, from avanquest. $39.99. Even some of the most recent startup bookkeeping software companies are getting up there in price, Zoho, Xero, Wave, and others, and they're also online.
Unlikely Intuit would sneak in an update that would disable the older type of QBDT, that would go against the license and probably cause a few huge law suites. That's one of the reasons they switch models and agreements. They can say the new version works as long as you have a subscription.
Also very easy to stop QBDT from looking for updates. You just turn off the Service.
Xero will probably be my next step or fresh books. At this point I'm pretty disgusted by these tactics that if I'm forced to go cloud it will be with one of those companies.
