Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

Hello there, Jon_42.

Let me add information regarding the feature to Import Google Timeline trips.

Regarding your concern about the Labs option from the Gear icon, you can locate it in QuickBooks Self Employed (QBSE). Since you mentioned that you have QuickBooks Online (QBO), it explains why it isn't present at your end.

On the other hand, the Import Google Timeline trips feature is only available in QBSE. Therefore, you might need to cancel your QBO subscription and purchase QBSE to switch products and utilize this feature.

However, we encourage checking out our other product options, such as QuickBooks Solopreneur, if you're a new customer and want to purchase QBSE. You can contact our Sales team to discuss better options that suit your business needs. Please visit this website and look for the contact details in the upper right corner: Self-Employed Accounting Software | QuickBooks Solopreneur.

Moreover, you might want to scan these resources for guidance on tracking mileage in QBO:

Kindly inform us in the Community if you have additional questions when tracking mileage or other related concerns in QuickBooks Online. We're here to help.

Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

The Import Google Timeline trips option hasn't been removed from the list of available features in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE), as shown in the tutorial.  Let's work together and get this feature available on your end, Jon_42.

To start, we can double-check your Google Timeline settings. Make sure that the option to import work trips from Google is enabled. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Labs.
  2. Locate the Import your work trips from Google option.
  3. Click the Try it out button.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions on how you can bring your mileage data to QuickBooks.

Once done, you can attempt exporting your trips from your Google Timeline file and importing them into QuickBooks Self-Employed.

  1. Login to your Google account. Keep this open in a separate browser tab.
  2. From a different browser tab, sign in to QuickBooks Self-Employed.
  3. Go to the Miles menu.
  4. Choose the Add trip ▼ dropdown.
  5. Select Import Google trips.

If the problem persists, use a different web browser to access QBSE. There might be a temporary issue with the browser you're using that's causing the option to not appear. For more details, here's how  you can perform the import trips: Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Also, I've added these articles as an additional reference in managing your tracked mileage:

Hello there, Jon_42.

Let me add information regarding the feature to Import Google Timeline trips.

OK. Now I have QBSE and still can't find " Labs option from the Gear icon". Thank you for any guidance.

Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

I appreciate you for learning more about the product, @Jon_42.

Usually, we can see the Labs feature in QuickBooks Self-Employed Solopreneur (QBSE) subscriptions through the Profile settings (Gear icon) under Tools. Since this option doesn't show on your end, I recommend logging in using a private window. Private windows don't store any history or form data, unlike the regular browser, which tends to hold onto information. Over time, this could cause problems while working with QuickBooks.

To save you time, you can use either of these shortcut keys:

  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift +N

If it works fine from there, switch back to your regular browser and clear its cache

  • Go to the Gear icon and select Labs.
  • Locate the Import your work trips from Google option.
  • Click the Try it out button.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions on how you can bring your mileage data to QuickBooks.

The screenshot is attached for your visual preference:

If the issue persists, try using other supported browsers to narrow down the cause.

Moreover, you'll want to check this article to learn about QuickBooks Solopreneur, and how it’s different from similar QuickBooks products: Introduction to QuickBooks Solopreneur.

Please don't hesitate to respond to the thread should you need additional assistance managing timeline trips in QBSE. I'll be here to assist, 24/7. Stay safe.

Option is not there. I've tried Chrome and Firefox, windows and mac, cleared cache. Please, can someone verify that is showing up on their QBSE right now? Thank you

Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

I've got you covered on how to get your trips from Google Timeline into QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE), Jon.

We appreciate you performing the recommended troubleshooting steps to get this resolved. Since you are already using QBSE and you use Google Timeline to track your miles, we can get a link to your Google Timeline file and import it into QuickBooks Self-Employed. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to the Google account you want to export miles from. Keep this open in a separate browser tab. Then, sign in to QuickBooks Self-Employed.
  2. Go to the Miles menu.
  3. Click the Add trip ▼ dropdown and then Import Google trips.
  4. Choose the Google Takeout link.

This opens up the Google Takeout page in a new web browser tab. Then, hover over your Google profile icon to make sure you're signed in to the correct account. Here's how:

  1. In Google Takeout in the Select data to include section, select the Location history checkbox.
  2. Choose the Multiple formats button and then JSON from the Location history dropdown. Then select OK.
  3. Select Next step. In the Delivery method ▼ dropdown, click Add to drive.
  4. In the File type & size section, select .zip for the type and 2 GB for the size.
  5. Press Create Export.
  6. Google may take a few seconds to create the file. When it's done, select the Open in Drive link.
  7. Select the verticle ellipses ⋮ and then Share.
  8. Click Copy link.

You now have the link to your Google Timeline file. Then, import trips into QuickBooks Self-Employed:

  1. Go back to QuickBooks Self-Employed.
  2. Go to the Miles menu.
  3. Select the Add trip ▼ dropdown and then Import Google trips.
  4. In the section titled Import your work trips, paste the Google Timeline file link into the Google Drive URL field.
  5. Select Import.
  6. Your Google Timeline trips are now in QuickBooks. Then, go to the Miles menu.
  7. Review the imported trips
  8. Categorize each as Business or Personal.

If the same thing happens, please contact our Customer Support Team for them to help you out with the process. Here's how to reach them:

  1. Go to Help (?) and select Contact Us.
  2. If you’re using the QuickBooks Self-Employed app, tap the + button and select Ask QB Assistant.
  3. Enter “talk to a human”, then select Continue.
  4. Select Have us call you to get a call from a support expert.

This link provides these steps if you ever need them again in the future: Contact QBSE Support. I'm also including this resource which gives you a rundown of all the things you can do with the system: QBSE.

That's it! Please let me know how it goes or if I can be of additional help. I'd be glad to answer should you have any follow-up questions. Take care always.

Thank you for your prompt response, @Jon_42. Let me provide some information about importing your mileage.

The "import Google Trips" into Solopreneur is currently unavailable. However, it would be a great feature to add. In the meantime, we can send Feedback to our project Engineers for this.

Here's how:

1. Go to your Gear icon.
2. Under Profile, select Feedback.
3. Provide your opinion, and then click Next.

I suggest using MileIQ and QuickBooks for easy tracking of your mileage.

Moreover, let me share these articles for your future reference in your mileage:

Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

Thanks for returning to this thread, Jon_42. I'm glad to share information on what QuickBooks product offers your needed feature for mileage.

The current QuickBooks product that supports importing Google Timeline is the QuickBooks (QB) Self-Employed subscription. This version is designed for self-employed individuals and is a perfect fit for managing Schedule C or Form 1040. For more information about QB Self-Employed, you can check this article: Overview of QuickBooks Self-Employed.

However, if you wish to add this feature to QB Solopreneur, you can follow my colleague's advice on sending feedback to our product developers.

In addition, you can review this article to learn how to transfer data if you want to switch to QB Self-Employed: Manually import transactions.

Feel free to reply to this thread should you have more queries regarding your mileage in QuickBooks. We're always happy to help.

Lots of products! I thought Soloprenuer was self employed. That is where the link goes. How do I get QBSE? Anyone have a direct link so I don't screw it up for the THIRD time? Thank you for your patience.

Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

I'm here to ensure you can successfully import your trips in QuickBooks Self-Employed, Jon_42.

I've checked with the error message you have shared in the screenshot and found no similar issue reported. Have you tried importing the trips using the Google Timeline shared by my colleagues above? If yes, and the same problem happens. I suggest manually adding trips. Here's how:

  1. Go to Miles on the left navigation menu.
  2. Click Add Trip. If this is your first trip, QuickBooks will ask you to complete the fields in the Vehicle info.
  3. Enter the date of the trip and description. The description should include the business purpose and the starting and ending locations.
  4. Enter the mileage, then tap Save.

However, if none of the solutions solve the issue, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Support Team. They have the necessary tools to diagnose the root cause of the problem. Additionally, they can submit a ticket to our engineering team to escalate the issue if needed.

Also, I've added steps below to ensure your trips are correctly categorized:

  1. Click the Miles menu.
  2. Review the imported trips.
  3. Categorize each as Business or Personal.

To find out how QuickBooks Self-Employed calculates the mileage you can deduct from your taxes. Refer to this article for future reference: Learn how QuickBooks Self-Employed calculates mileage deductions.

Please keep us posted if you have other questions or concerns about working with your mileage in QuickBooks. We're always here to help you keep your record accurate. Have a great day!

Is the Import Google Timeline trips into QuickBooks feature coming back?

I am also getting this error. Tried everything in this thread. I have Self-employed. I see all the options and got the .zip file into Drive, but when I put the link into the appropriate field I get the pop-up "Something didn't connect No trips were imported yet. Try again in a bit." I have tried in February and again today. I am not happy with the process so far and since I pay for this subscription I shouldn't need to manually enter every single trip!
