I've encountered a problem when manually moving an account in the chart of accounts in QB 2022. In hierarchical view, click and drag an account, drop it (within the same account type) where I want it but it drops a couple of lines away and will not go where I want it. Does anyone have a fix for this issue?

I appreciate the screenshots you've provided, DawnTully.
I replicated your situation just to verify and it turns out that you should be able to move the accounts you're trying to order in the Chart of Accounts.
The suggestions shared on this thread by my colleagues are designed to fix this behavior in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Since you're still experiencing the same issue, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Team. They can conduct further investigation to find a solution for this.

Hi there, @Anonymous.
Thank you for posting in the Community. I'd be happy to help share some details about manually rearranging the account in the Chart of Accounts (COA).
Let's make sure that you only drag and place the parent account with the same account type. Also, ensure to drag and drop the same subaccounts under a parent account.
However, if you see an unusual error message that isn't related to one of the causes listed below, I recommend using the Re-sorting list feature to resolve the issue. This restores the default order of your lists and allows you to rearrange them.
You'll want to know about the account types in COA, you can reference this article: Learn about the chart of accounts in QuickBooks.
I'm just a reply away if you need any further assistance in managing your accounts. Wishing you and your business continued success.
Thank you Abigail, however I am not trying to order my accounts out of their account type. In fact I'm simply trying to order subaccounts unsuccessfully. This is truly a new twist I've never encountered in over 25 years of using Quicken-Quickbooks. It's not covered in any help category nor in any conversation I can find in the community.
The list is in hierarchical order
I'm moving accounts with their own type
Keeping subaccounts with parent accounts.
Do you have any other ideas of what is causing this behavior?
Thanks for keeping us updated of the situation, DawnTully.
Let me add some additional steps to help you resolve the issue.
This might be caused by a possible data damage. We can perform the Verify and Rebuild Data. This tool helps identify any minor issues within your company file and automatically fixes them.
To Rebuild Data, here's how:
Note: Assisted Payroll customers should consult an Assisted Payroll agent before running Rebuild Data.
To Rebuild Data, you can follow these steps:
After the steps, please run the Transaction Detail report and check to see if the transactions for Simple IRA are showing up. Otherwise, you can follow the other solutions shared in this article: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file
To learn more about the reports and how you can customize them in QuickBooks Desktop:
Please let us know again on how it goes after trying out the steps. We want to make sure this is resolved for you. Stay safe.
Thank you RenjolynC, however this file has had a rebuild very recently with no errors and continues to experience this issue.
Additionally, this issue persists across several files that I manage, indicating it's unlikely a corruption in any file.
Good morning, @Anonymous.
Thanks for reaching back out and letting us know rebuilding the data didn't work to help fix your issue.
Since the problem is persisting, I suggest contacting our Customer Support Team so further assistance. Here's how:
It's that easy!
Keep us updated on how the call goes. We're always here to lend a helping hand. Best wishes!

Can you post screenshots of the issue? Perhaps a "before" and "after" and note what you tried to do and what happened? That might help people here understand. Since it's happening to all of your files, I suspect it's QB working as designed, if not a confusing design...
As you can see these are all accounts of the same type and the list is in it's original order in Hierarchical view in the first picture. In the second picture I dragged Old Port Specialty Tile to BENEATH Hammond Lumber and on release of the mouse it lands above Hammond Lumber. 3rd Shot I had to drag Old Port Specialty Tile beneath Maine Paint to get it to land beneath Hammond Lumber where I want it to live.
I appreciate the screenshots you've provided, DawnTully.

That's weird. I'd guess there's something wrong with the internal index or something like that. Unfortunately, fixing the index by re-sorting the list (from the Account button at the bottom of the list) will return all the accounts to their default order. This post is marked fixed. How did you fix it?
The issue is NOT fixed. Several replys indicated the only fix would be to ask for a Quickbooks helper to call me to discuss. I was getting MANY emails and the only way to stop the emails was to mark the matter fixed.
I did ask for the call, received it, walked through it with the agent while she was logged in to my computer to see it for herself. It puzzled her. She did the same thing on her own computer and encountered the same problem.
After more than 25 years with Quicken/Quickbooks I have only encountered this issue with the Accountants 2022 version. As with every new version there are always issues such as this the programmers sooner or later resolve, so the only thing to do is to report it, hope they can address is quickly, hope for a fix in an update and stay on automatic update. If you've got a better idea I'm all ears. Please and thank you.
Hello when I merge reports between two companies my chart of accounts (only some of the expense accounts)
get out of order.
My accounts match perfectly to each other meaning I have the same number and description for both of the company files I am merging.
It is bringing up the Taxes above the other expenses. My numbers are in line with my type of accounts and everything..
Any ideas on why it keeps doing this.
Hi, Cinergi.
There are times that an issue like this occurs when QuickBooks encounters unexpected browser-related crashes. To resolve it, try logging into your account on an incognito window. Here is a list of keyboard shortcuts to open one:
If it works, you can go back to a regular browser and clear its cache. Piled browser history can be the reason for some issues on the page. You may also switch to a different browser like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
Also, you may visit our Self-Help page for tips on managing your account.
I want to ensure that you're able to continue working on your QuickBooks. That said, let me know how these steps work on your end. I'll be around to help you.
I'm just a post-away whenever my help is needed.
We do not use online QB but the Enterprise Desktop version so excuse me if I am ignorant on this what does
the browser have anything to do with opening our QB on the desktop?
Not sure if my other post went through so I apologize for duplicate.
I am not sure why the browser has anything to do with Our version of QB since we use the
Enterprise DESKTOP version and do not login on line for any of our many company files?
