Missing payroll tax filing history after moving to new computer

I used the "move QB to another computer" function when my old computer's memory crashed.  I followed all instructions and I believe it was a "clean" transfer of all QB accounting and enhanced payroll information - with one exception: I've lost the entire history of my payroll tax filed (and saved) reports, as well as all electronically filed reports.

When I did a recent filing on the new computer, QB stored that file in a new directory located at c:users/public/public documents/intuit/quickbooks/company files/(company name)Tax Form History.  But this directory only has one .pdf file, being the one that I just completed and saved.

I'd like help with the following:

1) would like to direct QB to save tax filings and efilings in my personal user directory - not the public directory

2) I would like to retrieve all prior e-filing history

3) I would like to retrieve all prior tax .pdf filings

4) the public user directory path also includes qb letter templates and other qb files in directories like 'nudgeconfig', 'spell_checker', 'printer settings' and a few others.  I feel that these should be with the program files on the "programs" directory under my user name (x64).

Am I better off reinstalling everything and trying again? - how do I set up file paths for my saved files - both in QB and QB enhanced payroll (desktop versions)?

Missing payroll tax filing history after moving to new computer

Hello there. I understand the importance of preserving your payroll tax filing history and retrieving prior e-filing and tax PDF filings. I'm here to guide you on how you can retrieve the missing tax forms.

In QBDT, the previously filed forms are typically stored locally on your computer's hard drive within the company file. Thus, the missing payroll tax filing history is still present in your old computer's local drive or within the company file itself.

If you no longer have access to the old hard drive, there is still a way to retrieve the missing forms. You can run another copy of the form within QBDT and save it for your records. To learn more about this one, see the View and print payroll tax forms article.

I have the same issue. Is it not possible to repopulate the saved filings section in quickbooks desktop file forms section? We always have to look for the old records within the computer?

Thanks

Thank you for following this thread, mistymossy.

I recognize how concerning it can be to realize your payroll tax filing history did not transfer after moving QuickBooks to a new computer. Let me point you in the right direction on how to show the Saved Filings section.

When you move QuickBooks to another computer, the information stated above doesn't automatically come over. That said, you'll have to manually browse to the old computer's hard drive (connect it externally if needed).

Next, navigate to the path where your company file was stored to see if the Tax Form History folder still exists. Then, copy this over to the new device.

I have this helpful article that gives a general overview of moving QuickBooks to a different computer: Move or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop. From there, you'll learn which features are being moved and can't be copied to your PC.

To prevent accidental loss, make sure to create a backup copy of the company file. Furthermore, utilize these resources to stay on top of the year-end filings as well as processing your tax forms and payments:

Don't hesitate to reach out to me again if you have additional questions about restoring your tax filing history, mistymossy. I'm committed to helping resolve this in whatever way I can. Have a good one.

Since I already loved the file from my latest backup and then added the intuit data protect files, do so need to redo everything to do the migration?

And if so, how ?

Thanks

Missing payroll tax filing history after moving to new computer

Hi mistymossy,

Hope you're having a great day! Let me continue to help and answer your question about repopulating the forms or the links to the forms in the Saved filings section.

Redoing the process will not restore the links to the forms. So, just be sure to transfer the files to the new computer so you can access them anytime.

You can do a wildcard search to find the form location on the computer you've previously used. By default, the file has this local address in your C drive: c:users/public/public documents/intuit/quickbooks/company files/(company name)Tax

You can also extract the forms on Intuit Data Protect if you're using it.

If you have other questions about finding your forms, feel free to go back to this thread. I'll be happy to answer more questions.

Missing payroll tax filing history after moving to new computer

I think my original post got hijacked!  I have transferred all the company tax files from the old computer and can see all my tax filings going back to 2016.  I can scroll down the display on the payroll tax liabilities page and can see all of my e-filings, but mysteriously, only my tax forms history and payroll runs since May 2023. I’d like to recover all my payrolll and payroll tax filing and efiling histories!

How can this be achieved?  I have now run QB on my new computer for a month, so I have too many transactions, filings and payroll to go back and reinstall a backup.

Thank you for getting back to us, @HR-Solutions.

I'll share additional information to find your payroll tax filing and e-filing history in QuickBooks Desktop.

When transferring files from your old computer to the new one, you could have manually moved them to avoid instances in which not all files will transfer.

Meanwhile, you can locate the form location on a computer you've previously used. You can perform a wildcard search. By default, the file is stored in the following local address on your C drive: c: users/public/public documents/intuit/QuickBooks/company files/(company name)Tax.

Otherwise, I recommend logging in to Intuit Data Protection to retrieve old payroll data. Once done, you can import the recovered file to your new computer.

For future reference, you can read these articles about using Intuit Data Protect:
