Hi, Sarah. I'm here to share with you some information about the old and new Tax Center in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
The two tax options used by QBO are the old or manual and new or automated sales tax. The old tax setup allows you to calculate and use taxes for your transactions manually. While automated sales tax lets QuickBooks automatically do the sales tax calculations for you on your invoices and receipts for easy and accurate filing.
Intuit is currently rolling out the new or automated sales tax for all QuickBooks users. Once you've signed up for a new account, you'll get to enjoy the automated sales tax. If you still use manual sales tax, you can switch to the new sales tax system following these steps:
In the new sales tax system, you're still able to use custom rates on invoices and receipts. You can use custom rates to manually track special taxes like meals or excise tax. Or, use custom rates if you feel more confident tracking sales tax manually.
I'm adding these links and video article to learn more about the new sales tax setup offered by QuickBooks:
When you're ready to pay or file your returns, you may review the resources from these articles as your guide for both manual and automated sales tax:

I'm still not clearly seeing what is DIFFERENT between the old and new systems. This has been the most ridiculous question to get answered. Why is there not a place to see the old vs. new? I am in the old tax center still but do not manually determine what my taxes are. So I'm not convinced that any posts like this are actually answering this question.
I appreciate you joining in on this thread, akricker. Allow me to share additional information about the old and new Tax center setup.
In QuickBooks Online, the program provides you with two tas options on how you can track your sales tax returns. As my colleague mentioned above, these tax option setup determines your preferences on how you want to track your taxes.
With the new Tax center option, QuickBooks automatically calculate your sales taxes based on what and where you sell. If your state changes something, like sales tax rates, QuickBooks will auto-calculate and update your tax rates. With the old Tax setup, this requires your time and effort in calculating and using taxes for your transactions manually. You can follow the steps above if you'll want to switch to the new sales tax system.
As Intuit aims to provide convenience to customers, I'll be taking note of your concern for you to differentiate both options.

Will the old tax center be eliminated by Intuit? As an Intuit Accountant, I find the old tax center more accurate in capturing ALL reportable sales. The new tax center has many pitfalls and does not even closely reflect what numbers are needed to complete tax agency forms.
I see you're more comfortable handling your taxes using the old tax center in QuickBooks Online, heather. Let me guide you in the right direction to make sure your suggestions are noted.
