QuickBooks crashes after login UNLESS network disconnected

I have several QuickBooks company files stored on a Windows server which is running the QB Database server. Other users have no problem logging into these companies. When I login to any of these companies QuickBooks appears to load for a few seconds then crashes before any company windows appear. (I do always get a login screen.) If I copy those companies to my computer I get the same result. If I copy them to my computer then disconnect my Internet connection I can get into them. I have tried different network connections. I have tried creating a different Windows user account on my computer. If I attempt to login to these companies from another computer it is successful. I have completely removed and reinstalled QuickBooks on my computer.

What could this be? I'm inclined to believe QuickBooks is doing some sort of Internet check during the company opening process which is unsuccessful, but disconnecting the Internet causes that check to be bypassed. My next step is to wipe the computer and start fresh, which will have to wait until after fall tax season.

QuickBooks crashes after login UNLESS network disconnected

I can imagine how difficult it is to open your companies in QuickBooks Desktop seamlessly, @kwade. I'll provide some troubleshooting steps to help you get around this issue.

We can first update the program and verify your file type. This might be the root cause of the problem. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
  2. Ensure the file has the (.QBW) extension. You can't open other file types.
  3. Make sure your file isn't compressed or encrypted:
  4. Right-click the company file and select Properties.
  5. Select Advanced.
  6. Clear the Compress and Encrypt checkboxes.
  7. Select OK.

If the issue persists, refrain from saving your desktop settings before exiting QuickBooks. The program will reopen any closed windows when you close your company file. QuickBooks might freeze if you have an extensive report or multiple windows programmed to open on startup.

To open your company file without saving Windows, here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. In No Company Open, select your company file.
  3. Press and hold ALT on your keyboard, and then select Open. Don’t let go of ALT until the file opens. If QuickBooks asks you to sign in, release ALT and enter your password. Press and hold ALT again, and select OK.

If your company opens successfully, turn off the Save the Desktop option when closing preferences:

  1. Go to Edit and select Preferences.
  2. Select Desktop View.
  3. Click Don't save the desktop and then OK.
  4. Close and open QuickBooks again and open your company file.

If the file opens without any issues, you are ready to compare your data. Otherwise, perform Solution 3-in this article o fix this: Can't Open your Company File in QuickBooks Desktop

Thanks for trying. If you will actually read my post you will find that I am far beyond the "Here's how to open your company" solution.

Hi kwade,

I see that you've done a thorough checking to resolve the crash issue when you open your company file and I appreciate your effort. I have one more thing to add.

You can run the QuickBooks Tool Hub, particularly the Network Issues function. We do this when there's a crash behavior when opening a company file. Please refer to this article: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub. The first set of steps in the article is the installation process and the second set is how to use the hub.

If the problem persists, the next set of steps is to re-install QuickBooks, but I would recommend wiping out your PC, like what you've said, to start fresh.

Let me know if you have more questions. I'm just here to help.

Yes, I've done this. As I mentioned, other network users have no problem opening these files. Also, if I move the file to MY computer the problem persists UNLESS I unplug the network cable.

QuickBooks crashes after login UNLESS network disconnected

I understand your frustration with this issue, @kwade.

Experiencing crashes with QuickBooks immediately after login, except when the network is disconnected, can be quite perplexing. This indicates that there might be an interaction or conflict between QuickBooks and the network connection.

Since the issue persists even after doing the steps provided above, I suggest contacting our support team directly. They have the tools to check your account in a safe environment, and they can help find the root cause of your issue and find a fix.

Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Navigate to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Continue.
  5. Sign in to your Intuit account and select Continue and then Continue with my account.
  6. Click to Chat with us or Have us call you.
