Put simply, a payroll subscription is entirely separate from the amount you pay for the software each year. You can use it in conjunction with any current version of Desktop.

A current version is basically one that isn't three years old. For instance, Desktop 2024 will be compatible with payroll and other QB services until May 2027.

If you want to use payroll with QuickBooks, you'll need to either get in touch with Intuit about a payroll subscription or seek out a third party service that can integrate with QuickBooks.

Be warned; it's not exactly cheap.

This includes the capabilities to file and pay both federal and state payroll taxes, and electronically file W-2s at the end of the year.

QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Assisted, on the other hand, offers a more hands-off experience. This full-service option means our team takes care of the payroll setup, along with the filing and payment of your payroll taxes, allowing you to focus more on running your business.

You need an Enhanced Payroll subscription to integrate with QB Desktop Pro Plus. Another option, use an old QB Desktop with a non subscription license + Payroll Mate. You will import payroll data as IIF to QB Desktop.
