QuickBooks Premier 2018 Closes After Logon Screen

When I try to open our company file in QuickBooks Premier 2018 I get the password screen and, after successful login, QuickBooks paints the 'Home' window, the left Icon Bar, pauses for a second, and then just shuts down.

I have tried restoring from numerous known good backups and they all do the same thing. It feels like this could be a QuickBooks installation thing because this company file opens up just fine on the desktop at our office. So, I tried 'repairing' my laptop's QuickBooks installation and that didn't help.  I then uninstalled and reinstalled QuickBooks and still have the same problem.  I also tried running QuickBooks as an administrator with the same results.

Another weird thing is that we have a second company file that works perfectly fine on this same laptop.  That said, this file did experience the same thing a month ago but then just mysteriously started working again after numerous different restore attempts and is still working fine today.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this or maybe has a suggestion of something else to try?

Thanks in advance.

QuickBooks Premier 2018 Closes After Logon Screen

Hello, Knights of St Patrick.

Repairing the installation is one way to fix the crashing issue. I appreciate your time doing what you can to fix the issue. I have another solution for this.

It's likely within the company file itself instead of the program. Certain corrupted data in the company file can cause crashing issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

The file might be the culprit but let's ensure your QuickBooks Premier copy is updated to the latest release. Critical patches and updates can help fix the crashing issue. Here's how:

  1. Open the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click to the Update Now tab.
  3. Hit Get Updates to start the download.
  4. Restart QuickBooks after getting the updates.
  5. On the prompt, choose the option to install the new release.

After updating, open and log in to the company file again and check to see if the issue is there.

If it still closes, then let's download and run the QuickBooks File Doctor utility. This can scan issues and help you fix them easily. Follow the steps and details here: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.

When you're able to fix the crashing issue, you can visit our articles for guides and tutorials on doing specific tasks in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks Premier 2018 Closes After Logon Screen

Thanks for the response and suggestions.  Unfortunately, nothing has changed - I still can't open the file.  Our other company file does work but the other one still closes after login when the 'Home' window & Left Icon Toolbar are rendered.

I downloaded and loaded the QuickBooks Tool Hub.  I took both the "Quick Fix my File" and the "Run QuickBooks File Doctor" options.  Neither reported any errors and attempts to open the file before and after each option still failed. Incidentally, there is no error message or error screen - the program simply closes.

The last window displayed by File Doctor did say, "QBDBMgrN not running on this computer" and "CylancePROTECT is active on this computer and may be blocking QuickBooks".  I don't think these should be issues because the other company file opens just fine.

I have also attached the "QBWin.log" file (as a PDF) as there are a couple of error messages and I thought that might shed some light on the problem.

Any additional thoughts?

QuickBooks Premier 2018 Closes After Logon Screen

Hello, Knights of St Patrick.

You're welcome and thanks for getting back to me and for the details provided after running the File Doctor.

I did review the QBWin.log file and found several logs related to data corruption. Before we take this issue to our support, there's one more solution we can do.

Have you tried the QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery tool? If not, you can run it to restore or fix those damaged data. Check this article for the steps and details how: Recover lost data with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery.

If it still crashes after creating the ADR copy, you can contact our support so they can look deeper into the file. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu (you can do this without opening a company file).
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help
  3. On the pop-up window, click the Contact us link.
  4. Choose Solving Issues & Error Messages, then File & Network Management as the topics.
  5. Scroll down, then click Start a message or choose other means of reaching an agent.
