1099 NEC for tax year 2023 for filing on January 23, 2024

You're welcome, USABRAVO.

I'll provide additional information about when the 1099 NEC form will be available in QuickBooks Desktop for 2023.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues Form 1099 NEC to report nonemployee compensation for independent contractors, freelancers, and self-employed individuals. If you have engaged in such activities in 2023, you may expect to receive a 1099 NEC form from the entity that paid you. However, the IRS only makes the form available to filers starting January 1 of the following year, which means that the 1099 NEC form 2023 will be available on January 1, 2024.

If you use our system to keep track of your income and expenses, you can rest assured that we'll be ready to help you file your taxes as soon as the form is available. We understand how important it is to stay on top of your financial obligations, so we'll ensure you can review and file all your 2023 transactions in our system by January 2024.

Then, you can start e-filing your 1099 before January 29. This ensures your 1099s can be postmarked to your contractors by January 31. You can e-file 1099s through January 31 to be on time with the IRS. E-file is open until April 30.

Additionally, these articles will direct you on how to create your vendor' 1099s, the procedures to file them, modify your contractor 1099, and solutions to frequently asked questions regarding the form:

If you have additional questions about the 1099 and other forms (payroll or contractor), comment below and tag my name. I'll jump right back in to respond to them. Have a good one!

Welcome to the Community, @USABRAVO.

I'm here to share information about when you can run 1099-NEC 2023 in QuickBooks Desktop.

You can start as soon as January 1, 2024, to prepare your 1099-NEC 2023. It is important to begin the process early to ensure you have enough time to gather all data and correct if there are errors before January 31, 2024. It is the deadline for filing with the IRS and sending copies to your contractors.

When you're ready, you can start e-filing and make sure your 1099s can be mailed to your contractors by January 31. Then, e-file them on January 31 to be on time with the IRS. E-filing is open until April 30, 2024.

Here are some resources you can read to help you in managing 1099s with QuickBooks Desktop:

Thank you for that general information it is helpful.  However, the main question is when will the update be available for updating QB to run the 2023 1099's.  We are only about two weeks away from 2024 and QB is still running 1099 data for 2022 tax year.

My question as well, just did the latest update for desktop, then I had customer service call and it took over 5n minutes for them to verify my account, the agent did not understand the question, finally her reply was that the forms were released in November 2023 and that I just needed to update.  My entire conversation with her was a waste of time.  I had several other questions as well regarding efiling the 1099s.

Now that we will need to efile many of our 1099s, I understand that is done via Tax1099.  How does the billing work.  Do we as accountants get billed or does the client.  We would like to pay the fee and we will bill our clients directly if that is an option for this.

I appreciate you sharing this in the thread, Lisa. Allow me to share some information about the billing of 1099-NEC in Tax1099.

The billing and payments option in filing the form depends on the billing information attached or linked to the Tax1099 account. Thus, accountants or clients can file the form and pay the fees associated with the process.

Since you want to pay the fee and bill your clients directly, I recommend reviewing the billing information in the Tax1099 account and then updating it to your billing information instead. Once done, you can start submitting the forms for your clients and pay the fees.

Additionally, once done, you can check the submission status of tax forms.

Warm welcome, Shislop. Let me provide information so you can print your 1099 NEC for the tax year 2022.

If you filed your forms using Tax1099, you can print a copy by following the steps in this Tax1099 article: Where Can I See My Submitted Forms?

Meanwhile, if you filed your 1099's outside QuickBooks, I'd recommend contacting the IRS to get a copy of the prior tax forms.

Moreover, you can run a report to view the total payroll wages, taxes, deductions, and contributions.

I'm here to support you further if you require assistance printing your 1099 NEC or any other forms. Kindly respond by tapping the reply button below. Best wishes, Shislop!

Am I missing something, or are we just getting totally canned answers from Intuit?

I am using Quickbooks 2020 for Mac and have all the latest updates installed, but the app won't give me an option to create and file 1099s for 2023.

Dear Intuit: When will this option be available? It is January 5, 2023, and pretty soon my vendors will start asking me where their 1099s are.

I had the same questions and I am using QB 2022 not on Mac.  I updated my program under HELP... scroll down and update.  As soon as the 1/1/24 hit my 1099's were ready to run.  I am thinking that you need to have a newer version to get the update other than QB 2020.

I'm sorry to hear that you're facing challenges with QuickBooks, where you're not able to create and file 1099s for 2023. I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you, and I'm here to help.

For now, the best thing we can do is to update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release, here's how:

Update QuickBooks for Mac

In-product update

  1. From the QuickBooks dropdown, select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version is available, select Install Update.
  3. When prompted, select Install and Relaunch.
  4. When the update is complete, QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens.

Manual update

  1. Uninstall QuickBooks for Mac.
    1. Close QuickBooks.
    2. From the Finder menu, select Go Applications.
    3. Drag the QuickBooks icon to the Trash.
  2. Reinstall the latest version.
    1. Go to QuickBooks Downloads & Updates.
    2. Make sure to select the correct country, product, and version.
    3. Select Search.
    4. Select Download to download the installer file.
    5. Double-click the .dmg file.
    6. Drag the QuickBooks icon to the Applications folder to install.

Note: To verify the update and check the release number, open QuickBooks and press Cmd+1.

3. Restore your company file in QuickBooks.

Update QuickBooks Server for Mac

  1. Go to QuickBooks [year] Server next to the Apple logo.
  2. Select Check for QuickBooks Server updates.
  3. Select Install Update.
  4. Select Install and Relaunch.

Furthermore, if the issue persists otherwise, then you have to process it outside QuickBooks. My colleague above provided steps on how to file your 1099's outside QuickBooks.

Moreover, I'll be sharing the following resources to help you learn how to print 1099 and, if available, 1096 forms in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac:

Print your 1099 and 1096 forms

If there's anything else you need to accomplish in creating a 1099 for 2023, please don't hesitate to leave a reply. Keep Safe!

I am on Quickbooks Premier Non-Profit Edition 2021.

Following all the conversations above, I also have done everything.  The first report of eligible folks had vendors way before 2023.  Then it seemed to narrow it down to 2023 applicable vendors and all I did was hit the "continue" button. Now I seem to have 2023 vendors, but some have their amounts less than the $600 report amount.

I don't seem to be able to delete them, so do you just print and pitch?  This was really a hard process and it seems like you would put the amount > in if, Quickbooks does not have it hardcoded.  I could also see where if someone would be doing past years they could enter the year they want the data from.

Hi there, whitson0104.

I'll make sure your vendors show up on the 1099 NEC when filing the 1099.

To start, you'll want to check if your contractor is active and set up for 1099 tracking.

Here's how to check:

  1. Go to the Reports menu at the top.
  2. Select Vendors & Payables.
  3. Choose 1099 Summary.
  4. In the 1099 options dropdown menu, select All vendors.
  5. If you see the missing Vendor, make them a 1099 Vendor.

Next, ensure your payments for this contractor meet the threshold since only those you paid above the annual $600 cash threshold will get 1099. Lastly, make sure you're paying contractors from the right expense account.

For more details, see this article: Troubleshoot missing contractors or wrong amounts on 1099s.

Additionally, I've included these articles that'll help you learn more about preparing and filing 1099 forms:
