We went paperless 10 years ago and relied heavily on the Document Center in QB desktop. It was sold to us by QB as the wave of the future. :(. Now that Intuit has decided to phase out Desktop, has Intuit come up with any tool to migrate the attachments in bulk from desktop to online? We have 10 years of information, and it would appear that documents can only be moved manually, one at a time? There has to be an easier way. Please tell me that there was some foresight here by Intuit. There has to be a migration tool for this.
I can see the importance of being able to migrate attachments in bulk. I'll elaborte some details on this, rabidchkn.
QuickBooks Desktop is a more traditional accounting software that you download and install. While QuickBooks Online is best for businesses that need real-time collaboration and access to their QuickBooks files from any device. But both software caters to the same type of businesses.
For now, moving attachments in bulk is unavailable in QuickBooks. While this isn't a possible option, you can search and use a third-party application. You can also search online if it's not available in our QuickBooks Apps Center. This way, you'll be able to select an app that suits your business needs and helps you in moving your files (attachments) from desktop to online.
Moreover, you may notice differences in how your data appears once you've moved them to QBO. To learn more, check out this article for more details: Learn How Features And Data Move From QuickBooks Desktop To QuickBooks Online.

I truly prefer the desktop version, but I am forced to upgrade to online to keep payroll as is. I have searched for a 3rd party app to address this need, but have not found anything from a reliable source. Is intuit working on this issue, or do I need to switch accounting software?
No third party apps support migration of attachments. You can purchase a 3rd party service to convert data with attachments to QB Online or another accounting app. Contact me in private for details.
This is truly one of the most frustrating parts of the conversion.
The fact that Intuit is basically forcing people to convert, and then giving them NO options to help transfer a giant filing cabinet that THEY BUILT and encouraged the use of is absolutely insane.
I agree this is unacceptable. I am forced to move to QBO because Intuit is discontinuing QB Point of Sale, and the new software won't integrate with QB Desktop. I also have now lost 8 years of data/attachments. This needs to be addressed - Quickbooks customers pay A LOT for these services, and this run around for small businesses is ridiculous.
I agree. Finding out about this the day AFTER we converted makes me both an angry customer.
this should be clearly advertised so that customers have a chance to develop a work around or make the decision to leave the QB world altogether.
You can use the trial version to access your data files with attachments as a workaround. You don't have to bother converting it to QBO or other accounting programs.
Thank you. We are now looking at workarounds. What is the "trial version" that you mentioned?
Which QB Desktop year version do you have?
2023
You can use the trial version for QB Desktop 2023 Enterprise.
Hello - has anyone had experience with the attachment migration service Fourlane started offering?
Received this http://eepurl.com/iKVeSs the other day, had a consultation, and ready to go for it.
Been waiting 5 years for a service to help migrate 8k+ attachments.
Would love to hear anything about this service or the company anyone has to offer.
Much appreciated.
Keith
They said the fee for this service is usually around $5,500 + tax. Unless they lower the cost, it's too much.
We have better options to recommend:
1. Purchase a 3rd party service to convert data with attachment starting from $1,500, OR
2. Use the trial version of QB Desktop to access your historical data with attachments for good. You don't need to migrate the attachments data to QB Online.
4Gal - thanks so much for your response.
I always loved the idea of not migrating the attachments. However, if I am understanding suggestion #2, the users that only have access to QB Online would not have access to the attachments we leave behind with QB Desktop. Our attachments have become more operational than historical, and we find ourselves needing access to some that are decades old but not knowing in advance which ones. Which puts us back to needing to migrate them all.
With respect to suggestion #1, if you know of a 3rd party service, other than Fourlane, that could help us with migrating our attachments to QBO, please let me know!
Thanks,
Keith
You should contact @Fiat Lux - ASIA .
They've posted the service in this thread. Keep in mind, converting data with attachments can take weeks if you have large data to complete.
