The Add Attachment link that shows when I single-click a transaction in my checking register has stopped working as of about March 7, 2024. The dialog opens to select the file to attach, but when I do, nothing happens. I have been able to work around this by clicking Edit and then using the Add Attachment link near the bottom. Attachment problems have plagued QBO off and on for more than a year. It appears they have broken this feature again with the March update.
I appreciate you for letting us know, Roland12. Let me provide troubleshooting steps to help resolve and add file attachments from your bank registers.
In QuickBooks Online, some specific attachment file types are supported by the program to enable uploads to your transactions. To avoid or remedy these errors, make sure your company name in QuickBooks Online only contains accepted characters from this list. You may check this reference for more insights: Add or delete attachments in QuickBooks Online.
If the issue still persists, you may consider performing troubleshooting steps to help rectify the possibility of a webpage issue. Sometimes a browser is loaded with frequently accessed pages, which results in some unusual behaviors. With this, you'll need to access your account in a private browser to ensure the program runs without storing cache files. You may use these keyboard shortcuts:
If you're able to add the attachment again, you may get back to your default browser and clear its cache or use a different supported browser.
Furthermore, I'm sharing this guide to help you track and review your accounts to make sure they always match your bank and credit card statements: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
I'll keep this thread available if there's anything else you need further assistance with when adding attachments and managing transactions in your file. Feel free to let me know anytime, and I'll be around to get you covered. Stay safe!
Additional info:
I have seen this behavior yesterday and today on three different computers (two Macs and one Windows 10) and with two users. All using Google Chrome. The Windows user had just installed Chrome within the past week. Last week the attachment link in question worked fine on all three machines.
Any replies that tell me to clear my browser cache will be ignored.
Have any other users experienced this? I strongly suspect a bug was introduced with the March version, since we usually get updates around the start of the second week of the month.

I have found a very simple workaround. Please let me know if it works for you.
Single-click the transaction in the register, and then click the Edit button, as you would do if you needed to split the transaction. When it opens full-screen for editing, use the Add Attachment link at the bottom. That one still works for me.
This work around worked for me - thank you!
Thank you so much. It worked! I'd been trying to attach on the line item before opening the edit as it has always worked in the past. Thank you for figuring out the step needed for the rest of us
You're welcome, Star. Glad I stumbled across that. Everyone, please do not click the Accept as Solution button, as QBO has not fixed this malfunction. I'm debating whether I should go through the hassle of contacting Support or just wait to see if it clears up next month.
Thank you for being more help than QB Support LOL That works for the most part, but I add expenses "in bulk" in the register, and the solution doesn't work for that. I have to create the transaction, save it, then go back and open, edit, add attachment, then save again. Super frustrating and a super time waster! I wish they would just fix the bug, instead of offering generic fixes that don't work- clearing cache, private browser window... none of that works!
Hi MIchelHMC, I have not noticed that behavior. Most of my attachments are single files, but I do attach multiple files quite often. I just tested it and was able to do four at one time. Are you attaching PDFs?
I have noticed that on deposits, there is no Add Attachment link at the bottom of the Edit window, but the attachment dialog does open if I click the word Attachment, or anywhere inside the drag-and-drop rectangle.
I am in the process of handing off our church's bookkeeping duties to a new person, and this is not making training any easier! Thanks for the kind words.
Correction: The word to click at the bottom of a deposit is Attachments (plural).
I still cannot add files, I'm trying to add a simple pdf as usual. The workaround through editing a categorized transaction is not working either. I've logged out and back in already. The attachment link activates but is completely unresponsive. Other ideas???
I appreciate the initial steps you've taken, @ali820. I'm here to provide an additional troubleshooting guide to rectify the file attachment in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Since you have already tried other steps and are still experiencing the same issue, I recommend performing basic troubleshooting to determine if it's a browser-related problem. Sometimes, a browser may be filled with frequently visited pages, leading to certain unexpected behaviors. To address this, open your QBO account in an incognito window to ensure the program runs without storing cache files. You may use these keyboard shortcuts:
If this works, clear your cache and cookies to update any website preferences that might interfere with the program's functionality. If not, you can switch to a different supported browser that is compatible.
You may also want to refer to this article to help you identify the supported file types and learn how to attach a document using these supported files: Add or Delete attachments in QBO.

Please let us know if you have questions about file attachments. I'm here to help. Take care.
I'm sorry to hear that, ali820. After reading your post I tried it again and it is still behaving the same for me as before: the attachment link that initially shows when I single-click a transaction in the register does not work, but once I open the transaction for editing, the link that is displayed there works.
I have had a running battle with the attachment feature. Now when I can't get it to work, I report the malfunction, make a folder to hold the files that I would have attached, and hope that the next month's update fixes it. I don't have hours to spend with QBO support when all they're going to do is tell me to clear my browser cache. I doubt the responders are even human.
I appreciate you returning to this thread and providing an update about your concern, @Roland12.

I am still having the attachment problem. Initially, the expense show a "0" in the attachment column. I do the same thing: save the transaction, open it, edit and add the attachment, then save and close. Seems like a pretty simple for QB to fix, but not much of a priority for them as we have figured a work-a-round. Although time consuming and frustrating for us. Matt
Same here. Thanks for the report.
Yes, this ongoing problem exists for me (probably since March as well) and every time I get frustrated I send them another "feedback" message about the problem. The more feedback they get for an issue the faster it gets moved up to the top for resolution I was told. Squeaky wheel...
I have retired from my bookkeeping position, but still have access to our organization's QBO file. I tried attaching a PDF in the register this morning without going to "Edit," and it appears to be working properly again. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks.
I value the efforts you have made to inform us about this matter and for consistently assisting other participants in this discussion, Roland12. Allow me to provide you with the latest information regarding this situation.
