Crashes on Sonoma

Just wanted to chime in and say this WORKS for MacOS Sonoma 14.0.0 with the current version of QuickBooks Mac Plus 2022.

Tip: Press and hold the COMMAND key *immediately* after entering your password and pressing OK. Whatever you do, DO NOT click Home afterwards. The Home screen is what crashes QB.

Thanks Brooks, you just helped me save a client of ours who was in full panic mode.

So far it sounds like the workaround works for 2022 and 2023 (and 2024 but there's already an update there). Doesn't appear to work for 2019.

maxwelk1 reports it not working in 2021. I tried 2021 (following the steps with option keys and such) and got a hang on opening the sample company file. I forced quit the app and relaunched and it opened the Sample Product company file.  But it crashes when I attempt to open the Write Checks window or the settings window. (One thing to note - if you've already submitted a crash report you can hit command-Q when that comes up to quit it rather than wait on it).

Still trying to find a work around for those versions.

If you noticed, IntuitBrooks never provided any response to anyone using QBD 2020 or any older version. I believe that's a strong indication that they won't be releasing any patches for any of it. Consider immediately installing the trial version of QBD 2022 and/or 2023 and using the workaround to get it running on Sonoma. You may have time to consider the option of whether to purchase a new subscription license for QBD 2024 in October OR run a trial version of QB Desktop Windows for good on Parallels OR convert your data to QB Online or another cloud based accounting app.

I think QB Online is way overpriced! If you have inventory/items then you will pay $100 per month for one company! A desktop subscription will cost considerably less. I briefly tried QBO but it was horribly slow. Since I have a Mac Plus subscription I am now running QB 2024 successfully.

I've been a loyal QuickBooks user since my LLC was formed in 1998. I dutifully purchased updates every few years and eventually moved from Windows over to Mac probably around 2004 or 2008.

Sadly this has been the default behavior of QuickBook Desktop for Mac since as long as I can remember. The new Mac OS is released and then the long line of QuickBook customer carnage begins, along with a giant pile of excuses by Intuit support. Thankfully I do not let Apple auto-update my Mac anymore. I've learned this painful lesson more than once with Intuit, and VMWare...both companies seem to require paid updates to their software if you are not running the very latest version...it feels like it is purposeful shake down...

Truth hurts but desktop customers should know by now that Intuit has deprioritized Desktop versions of QuickBooks. They want you on their monthly $$ Online product. As others have noted many companies were ready on Day 1 for Sonoma but not Intuit...They've had all summer to work out the kinks on Sonoma Betas but instead we hear how Apple did not give them time to test. Hahaha. Sorry I do not buy this one minute.

Ok, here is a solution I have not seen offered to people and I'm not sure why...maybe because it is a hassle...but less of a hassle than uninstalling Sonoma!!

Get yourself Parallels or VMWare or Virtual Box or some Virtual Machine Software. Download an image of Ventura and install Ventura as a Virtual Machine. Install your old QuickBooks onto the Virtual Machine running older MacOS Ventura...and disable auto-updates on your Virtual Machine. Now you can use your Sonoma as normal but when you need to use QuickBooks, you'll have to bounce into your Virtual Machine running Ventura.... this isn't ideal, but it will get you back up and running while you wait to see if Intuit will provide a solution that doesn't involve huge monthly or annual costs...

PS: can someone from Intuit at least be useful and provide a path to purchase QB 2021 while it is still supported? So far the only solution is use QB Online OR pay an huge annual fee AND get excuses for why the software isn't compatible for weeks and weeks...

I would say you are very blessed if you can find a new license for QBD 2021 for Mac or even a reused one at this time. I have been taking that search since last year for my clients. If you don't mind using the trial version of QB Desktop Windows on Parallels, you can use it for good.

Crashes on Sonoma

INTUIT has created a nightmare for Mac users of Quickbooks

After the crashing in Sonoma it leave my small business in a big mess, Ive lost years of invoices that I need

We now at the end of the month have to start over invoicing month, over 500 entry gone! and btw switching to online quickbooks doesn't restore everything that we have done

If you added anything in the description like our shipper number and customer purchase order they are not imported, just the saved item description

So I have 10 years of invoices without any traceability to purchase orders

THIS NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED SOON

I have the same problem. Get to login screen and that's it. Freezes up. What's quickbooks solution? Sign up for Online at a cost of $180 per month. But since we're forcing us into this it's 50% off for the first year. Big deal. At least that will give me a year to find a different accounting program. How can I downgrade my OS. I can't even pay my employees right now

I have the same problem. Get to login, then the spinning wheel of death. After a 3 hour chat yesterday with QB support. The only solution is to upgrade to Online Essentials for $180 per month. But 50% off for the first year. At least that gives me a year to find another accounting program. Can't even pay my employees

Same problems after Sonoma upgrade.  A consistent hang at loading the company file.

Called tech support and the technician wanted to see the system. Shared control, they saw the problem and then proceeded to tell me my system was all screwed up and that all my data files were corrupted.  They then wanted $3000 for a 6 month data management fee to fix the problem.  Yes, $3000.  That was the lowest tier.  There was a $4000 and $5000 dollar option.   My data files aren't corrupt but someone at Quickbooks tech support is.

I uninstalled the previous Mac Desktop Plus 2023 using CleanMyMac and reinstalled.  That allowed me to open the company file.   But as everyone else previously found, don't use the home or you will hang.  Not sure everything else still works.

What is incredibly wrong here is tech support knows this issue but are turning it into a giant "data management" fee scam.  Bad enough they weren't ready for Sonoma,  this may need a class action lawsuit if others are getting the whole "data management" fee scam thing.

Don't upgrade if you haven't already.

it's almost like ransom.  what a way to win customers, no?

We'll make sure you are dependant on our software then we'll wait for something to break and FORCE you to upgrade.

Nice strategy. One would hope they make the new software so compelling that one would WANT to upgrade, what a concept.  Instead its upgrade or die.

Be careful with Parallels.  Been there, done that.  Parallels drive became corrupted in a Mac OS update.  Lost that data.

I have tweeted to  @AlexGBalazs and @sasangoodarzi, Intuit's EVP of Development and their CEO.  I let them know that I would like to see a patch for QB Mac 2019 and am willing to pay for the patch, although that should not be necessary as Intuit knew ahead of the launch that Mac QB Desktop apps would crash. Or, they should have known as they had the Beta Sonoma OS from Apple up until the announced official release date and knew that that all their Mac Desktop software including their latest versions did not work and would crash.  (I am assuming all versions of MacDesk Top software was being tested and they found that all versions had some sort of problems. They talked about having to patch 2024.)  They should have known this and communicated this problem to their clients.  This as an Intuit problem for not notifying clients in advance that their Mac Desktop users should not upgrade.  They certainly have the means to notify me when there is a new product that they want me to buy, so I am sure they could have given me a heads up.  I am very disappointed that they are not stepping up and offering a patch/s for 2019 and versions forward.  This software is less than four years old and should not be sunsetted so quickly.   Intuit needs to do the right thing for it's clients.  QB Mac 2019 does everything I need it to do and I do not want to be forced to remain on an older OS because they will not allocate some engineering resources to keep the product compatible with OS upgrades.  I am not asking for new features, just a reasonable update to work on a new OS.

What a complete and utter fiasco! Is it utter incompetence? Or is it that they just don't care?

How did you contact their “Support”? I'm not sure they came from Intuit. Make sure not to call any number you find on the internet casually.

Rip off! Online support is borderline worthless. If an issue is even slightly difficult, don’t put any stock in what they say.

Please watch this video and follow carefully every step. Explanations are extremely clear. It will downgrade from Sonoma to Ventura. You only need a USB key of 16gb or more. I did yesterday, it took me several hours but I can now use QB desktop 2019 for Mac. Once done, disable autoupdate on Apple settings and Apple Store.

Here's what I have experienced on this issue.  I upgraded to Sonoma yesterday but did not attempt to use (Quickbooks for Mac Desktop 2023) until this morning.  Everytime I attempted to open the Home Page I got the beachball which never quit until I used force quit.  After about an hour of googling and trying different things, I gave up.  Soon after I opened the app again and did not try to open the homepage, but was able to select anything from the other dropdown menus.  So it appears the drop down menu "Open Home Page" is the glitch for me.  I haven't done more than enter a few invoices so haven't found any other glitches.  I hope they can resolve this and everyone's issues soon.  The new price for Desktop 2024 is $649. Quite an increase considering the months they had to address this issue.

Hi I recently update to Sonoma 14.0 operating system on my 3 Mac computers and now when I try to print an estimate from my quickbooks online it doesn't print it fully. Just our logo and grey boxes print. The words I've typed in for the price, description etc do not print. But if I save it to my desktop, then open it in acrobat or word, it prints just fine. It is printing fine on my other computers that were not updated. The invoices print just fine as well. I contacted Apple support and they wanted me to contact you as well. On Safari, web browsers, the estimates open in "Preview" to then print. It looks like a glitch between QBO, preview. Do you know anything about this glitch?

Oh, geez!  I am traveling and have not printed anything and will not be able to print until I get home tonight to try it out.  I am sorry you are having these issues.  Until I get home and do some "real" work I have no idea what will happen.  I have many checks to print tomorrow and am fearful about that now too.  I will let you know.  Sorry, for your troubles.

Work around for Sonoma Crashes

Reposting as it keeps getting buried. This does not seem to work for 2019 but does work for 2023 and 2022 and perhaps others:

To get the app to launch without opening any company file hold down the option key while launching the app. This prevents QuickBooks form opening your previously used company file.

Then select your company file from the "No Company Open" Window.  Hold down the command key while opening the file. This prevents the last used windows from opening.

Then go into QuickBooks->Preferences. Select the Toolbar & Tabs icon in the 3rd row down and then uncheck the Use Tabbed Windows checkbox.

Avoid opening the home page.

"As others have noted many companies were ready on Day 1 for Sonoma but not Intuit...They've had all summer to work out the kinks on Sonoma Betas but instead we hear how Apple did not give them time to test. Hahaha. Sorry I do not buy this one minute. "

The "kinks" are Sonoma bugs.  We report them to Apple during the beta and recognize that Apple may not fix them. But they do fix many of the bugs as the thing progresses.  We endeavor to come up with solutions for the ones they don't fix by rewriting affected code paths. There are fixes for the main crashes we are seeing and we will be rolling them out as soon as possible in supported versions.

Apple tends to fix the bugs that show up in Apple, Adobe and Microsoft products. But there doesn't seem to be any one working at Apple using QuickBooks Mac.  Which makes sense - they are employees of a large organization and not using small business software.

Anyway, we have been working on solutions. Once Apple announces the release date (and thus the final beta candidate) we need adequate time to test all the versions of QuickBooks we have to update.  It takes time to test each version of QuickBooks on each operating system.  That's the delay you are seeing.  While people hitting issues with Sonoma is bad it is much worse if we ship something that destroys someone's data. We have to be careful.

We are not allowed to update unsupported versions. The unsupported versions can no longer download online banking data so that's one way to tell.  But if you've upgraded to Sonoma and are on a supported version I'd advise trying the work around I posted and waiting as we roll out fixes to supported versions.
