Good day:

Does QB require the middle dot in credit card names / GL accounts?  For example, one of our credit card's name begins with 22300 · Bank of.....  Is that middle dot assigned and required by QuickBooks or could it be replaced with a hyphen?  I understand that it is used as a separator but does it have to be that middle dot specifically?

Thanks for getting back with the Community, GalinMcMahon.

You're correct, once your Use account numbers option is enabled, QuickBooks will use the middle dot you're referring to to separate your account numbers and account names.

If you'd like to submit feedback about this, you can use the steps in Rasa-LilaM's post to do so. Your feedback's important to Intuit. It will be reviewed by our Product Development team and considered in future updates. You can stay up-to-date with the latest news about your product by reviewing Intuit's Product Updates webpage.

You also have the option of using the workaround mentioned in Angelyn_T's post to turn off your Use account numbers setting. Doing so will remove the middle dot you're referring to.

Please feel welcome to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a great Friday!

Thank you for your inquiry, Galin. Let me share some insights about the accounts in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Once the option to Use account numbers is enabled, the system utilizes the middle dot to separate your account number and name. If you don't want to see the dot symbol for your accounts, you can follow these steps as a workaround.

  1. Disable the account numbers for your accounts.
    1. Click on Edit, then Preferences.
    2. Go to the Accounting section, then Company Preferences.
    3. Untick the Use account numbers box.b1.PNG
    4. Hit OK.
  2. Modify the Account Name with the number and name using the alphanumeric/sign you want.
    1. Look for your account, then click on Edit.
    2. Input the details in the Account Name field.b13.PNG
    3. Tap on Save and Close.

Once done, revisit your Chart of Accounts to see the result.

On the other hand, I'm adding this material for more tips while working with your chart of accounts: Add, edit, or delete accounts in QuickBooks Desktop.

Thank you kindly for the reply, Angelyn.

Looking into the Account Listings and the Account Edit, we don't actually use that middle dot.  QuickBooks adds it automatically.  There doesn't seem to be a way to change what it is adding, i.e. defaulting to a dash rather than the dot.  Is there a company-wide setting that needs to be changed?  Or is there perhaps a hidden corner within QuickBooks that will allow us to change this separator?

To recreate:

Chart of Accounts

Right click an account that has the dot

Choose Edit Account

The Edit Account window has the account name and then, under it, "Subaccount of."  Regardless of whether or not it's a subaccount, QB names the line 'Account #' [dot] 'Account Name' if there is no subaccount or 'Account #' [dot] 'Account Name' [dot] 'Subaccount' if there is a subaccount.

Just to be clear: The only way to not include the middle dot after the account number....is to not use account numbers?

Also, what about the middle dot between the account NAME and the subaccount name?

I'm a little confused as to why QB would use a non-standard symbol in such an important field.  I would think a hyphen would be much more universally-useable.
