Desktop Pro 2016 and Windows 11

I'm running Desktop Pro 2016 on Windows 10 and really don't have a need to upgrade Quickbooks at this time.  I would like to, however, upgrade to Windows 11.  Has anyone had success in running an older version of Quickbooks on Windows 11?  Many thanks

Welcome to the Community space, @KParent1.

Thank you for sharing the details of your concern. I'm here to provide some insights regarding upgrading to Windows 11 in case you decide to do so.

Considering that you mentioned not upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop, I suggest you refrain from doing so. This is because upgrading to Windows 11 might result in compatibility issues since QuickBooks Desktop 2022 and later versions are the only ones compatible with the new OS.

I wouldn't recommend to run QB Desktop on Win 11. Unless you have no other choice.

Did you have any success installing Desktop Pro 2016 on Windows 11?

@ardyiii

Did you encounter any error message?

Another option, try to install it on Win 8 compatibility mode.

Sorry I never saw your question earlier.  I never did try - I have another computer with Windows 10 so will just leave it on there.

A related question... I have already upgraded to QuickBooks Online but I still have Desktop Pro 2016 on my PC and regularly use it to access historic reports.  I don't enter any new data on the desktop version.  Will I still be able to access the data on Windows 11? Thanks.

It's good to know that you've upgraded to the online version, @g_dely.

Please know that your QuickBooks Desktop version doesn't support Windows 11. You can check the system requirements for Desktop Pro 2016 to verify its compatibility with your operating system.

@g_dely

Have you tried to install your QB Desktop 2016 on Win 11? We can still run QB Desktop 2009 and later on Win 11 Home with minor issues.

Thanks Chrea.  No, I haven't tried.  My PC is pushing me to upgrade to Windows 11 and I just thought I'd explore all my options before going ahead.  That's good to know that 2009 is working for you. Thanks.

If you can't install it, you can use the trial version of a newer version (e.g 2021) to access your historical data for good as a workaround.

I have upgraded to Windows 11 and yes Quickbooks 2016 works on Windows 11.

Plus Quickbooks 2011 works on Windows 11.

If you reside in Canada near Ottawa, Ontario I can tell you exactly who can install it for you.

Thanks

Thanks for posting that . . . good to know   I really do not want to go to a subscription based product and right now. I'm running Desktop Pro 2016 on Windows 10 but would need to switch to Windows 11 eventually.

I was able to install QBPro 2016 Desktop on my new computer with Windows 11, but it doesn't seem to be able to restore my previous files and it won't let me transfer it to the new computer. Are you familiar with a workaround to get it to restore to a backup file or transfer the old files onto the new machine?

@tdaerr

Did you reinstall the same QB Desktop 2016 license from your old machine? What error message did you encounter?

I did use the same license, yes.

When I open it and select Open or Restore and existing company, restore a backup copy, local backup, I select the backup file on the flash drive that I saved from my previous computer, I save it with a new company name, and "Please insert disk 1 in drive and click OK."

I don't have a disk 1 or any disk, what can I do?

Try to copy the backup file from the flash drive to your computer. Then restore it locally.

I tried that, now it doesn't ask me to insert a disk anymore, it just does nothing - goes back to the "No Company Open" screen where I started from.

It is possible that your backup file is corrupted. Can you secure a new backup file from your old computer? If not, consider purchasing a third-party file repair service.

Wow, I wish the lady I was talking to at tech support might have suggested this. All she wanted to convince me of was "not compatible" and then put me on hold for a ridiculous amount of time before I hung up, I'm sure she was trying to get me to a sales agent to sell me something new.

Thanks, that flash drive apparently has problems! It worked to restore my company files once I backed them up to another flash drive.

Thanks so much!
