Any suggestions on what course of action to take in case the file n email was opened?

Did you use any login credentials after you open the file? You can change the password to be sure.

I wanted to join this conversation that I'm thankful for this thread because I received this phishing email yesterday afternoon. We do have Norton, and it appeared legit to me. I did open the pdf, but I don't think this will do anything to your device. I was going to call, but I googled the number first, and that is how I found out it was fraud. I searched "does intuit own Norton", and I came across this conversation. Thank you, again.
