Hi there, iMe547.
I would love to help you delete the template, but I need additional information about the issue. Can you share the screenshot of the error again? It seems that the image wasn't attached to your post.
I am looking forward to your reply. Have a good one.

Hello, iMe547.
When posting a screenshot in the Community forum, please make sure it doesn't contain any personal or company information. If it does, you can edit it first since the page will remove it automatically.
Once done, you can post a new reply or update your previous comment. Then, either select the Photo icon or click the Choose File button to attach a screenshot. Please see the image below for your reference.
If you're looking for a way to make the template you've customized the default, this isn't an option. You can select the template and save the invoice. QuickBooks remembers the most recently used template and uses it when creating a new invoice.
Check out this article to guide you in creating a custom template for your forms: Use and customize form templates.
We'll keep an eye on your response, don't hesitate to post again. We're happy to help.
Oh sorry wait I send it
Thank you for the screenshots, iMe547.
It seems that you're trying to delete an original templated. Thus, the system prompted you with an error message.
As for making a manually created template a default one, this option is unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop. The system follows the format of the previous transactions.
While this option is unavailable, I'd suggest sharing a feature request with our developer's team. Let me guide you with these steps:
I've also added these links that have detailed information on how to resolve errors when customizing templates and on how to maximize the functionality of QuickBooks Desktop:

I'm actually using QB desktop 2023 but it will not let me delete a template. I receive a message telling me I have to make it inactive, which I did. The problem is that when I print the invoice, it continually defaults to the inactive template which I made inactive.??? Can you help?
I appreciate you joining the thread and sharing details about your experience in deleting an invoice template in QuickBooks Desktop, @daynarp. Allow me to give you some ideas about it and walk you through what to do.
QuickBooks remembers the template that you previously used, then set it as default and use it for new invoices. This is likely the reason for it to still appear on your Invoice page even after deactivating it.
Although it's inactive, QuickBooks won't allow you to delete it given that it's used in at least one transaction. To prevent it from being displayed, you can choose to hide it instead. Allow me to demonstrate how to do this:
It's also important to have an alternative template available to replace and assign for your transactions.
If you're all set with this, I've got some helpful articles you can explore about managing templates and fixing issues you may encounter when you use them:
Please keep in touch so I can help you further with invoices or QuickBooks in general. Take the best care!
