I'm here to help you fix the error that you're currently experiencing right now, kstansbury.
I'd like to verify if what page when running payroll did you receive the error so I can walk you through from there. Before we run payroll, let's make sure that the employee's information are complete. Usually, the error message also tells you what's lacking or needed to be fixed first.
Let's also verify if the error you were prompted with is a browser-related issue. There are times the browser's cache store internet files that cause unexpected behavior on frequently visited sites such as QuickBooks.
To start with, log in to QuickBooks Online through a private browser and then run payroll from there. Here are keyboard shortcuts that you can use in opening one:
If you're able to submit payroll successfully, we can switch back to the main browser to clear the cache. Other support browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox can also help us prevent unusual behavior.
Here's a reference that will walk you through in getting started with payroll.

I am already to the step to submit payroll but get this error
I tried to go to chart of accounts and edit the payroll account but get an error there as well stating I cannot because the account is already set up for online
Thank you for the additional details, kstansbury.
The payroll accounts are preset when you activate payroll. If you've changed any of them before running your first paycheck, please bring them back to their original setups, like the Account type, Detail type, and the parent account assignment.
You can also check the Accounting Preferences for payroll to be sure they have the correct assigned account.
After bringing back the original setup of the accounts and making sure that you have the right accounting preference, try creating your first paycheck again.
Let us know how it goes.
I am not certain how to set them back as I said the online banking before I said a payroll in the payroll account is a banking account that is a separate checking account that I transfer money from the main account to cover our payroll cost. So, I am totally lost now.
Thank you
I have set up my payroll to the checking account that we withdraw from and went to the chart of accounts and it is under banking not expenses. I am uncertain how to reset it as I set up the online banking before we subscribe to payroll.
I am lost now
Thank you
