multi factor authentication

For the past week or so I am being asked to authenticate my account every single time I log into Quickbooks.  That can be several times a day that I have to click pictures and then have a code texted to me before I can log in.  I don't understand why this is happening.  I'm using the same computer I've always used for QB online. This is extremely annoying.

Hi, mbell19.

Your device may not be recognized if you are accessing your QuickBooks Online account using incognito or private browsing mode, or have recently cleared your browser cookies and local cache. In these case, you will need to verify your account as if you were using a new computer.

Also, you can check the Remember my user ID when logging in to your account. Please see screenshot below:

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I did recently clear my cache.  However, I have verified myself every day for the past two weeks, so I should not have to keep doing this.  In fact, I've just had to do it again. I have the remember me boxes checked as well.  This is going overboard.

Also, I am not in private browsing mode.

Hello there, mbell19!

I called QB support and hopefully the problem is resolved. I was told to go into my security settings within my profile and check that two-step verification was not turned on.  That setting was in fact turned off, yet I was still having to do two steps to log in. I turned that option on - then off again - and so far that has fixed the problem. So it seems there was a glitch within QB that was acting like I had that feature turned on, when I didn't.

As an update, it mostly appears the issue is resolved, but I have still had to receive a text to log in a couple of times since my call to QB - just not every time anymore. I still feel like there is a glitch within QB online that's making this happen, since I do have two-step authentication turned off in my security settings.

Hi mbell19,

Thank you for calling our QuickBooks Online support as advised by my colleague and for updating us.

Since you've already tried checking your browser settings, I suggest contacting an IT professional. This way, he/she can further check your computer and browser setup and keep this authentication problem from coming again.

Please let me know below if you have any other questions.

I am having (and have had for months) the same issues as the OP. Just this week alone, every time I've logged in over the last 3-4 days I have to do the image Captcha and then do the text message 2-factor code. Extremely annoying. I've contacted QBO support about this in the past, no resolution. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when or why QBO requires multifactor auth. I don't clear my cookies, I'm not in private browsing mode, and I have the intuit.com domain whitelisted in my ad blocker.

Hi there, @jmv_colorado.

Thanks for coming to the Community. I'm here to help share some information about the Two-step Verification when accessing QuickBooks Online.

Your account's security is QuickBooks top priority. Passwords, on their own, are not always secure. This is why we added the Multi-Factor Authentication and Two-step Verification to ensure that only authorized person can access your account.

To learn more about the accounts verification process in QuickBooks Online, please refer to this article: What is the difference between Multi-Factor Authentication and Two-step Verification?

However, you have the option to turn this off by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Intuit Online Account.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Select Turn Off to expand the Two-step verification section. You will be prompted to enter a phone number if you initially did not enter it during the set up of your account. Enter the number you want to use to verify the account and select Turn on text message verification.
  4. Choose to receive the one-time passcode by either text message or voice message and select Turn Off.

That should do it, @jmv_colorado.

You've got me here if you have any other questions about this concern just let me know by leaving a reply below. Take care!

In the Accountant's Version, there is no provision for each of my Team members to enter their own cellphone number.  Am I going to get text messages throughout the day with no clue who is needing a code - or if I am in a meeting, they can not run payroll?

  2. Go to the Gear icon and then select Manage users.

  4. In the User Type column, select Edit to change their role to admin.
  5. Click the small arrow in the Action section. Then, select Make primary admin.
  6. Select Make primary admin again to confirm.
