Join nowI am the new treasurer for a small networking group. The previous treasurer apparently used their business copy of Quickbooks desktop (assumed) to keep the books.
We are so small, I'm sure we can do the books with just a spreadsheet, but I want the old data as a starting point.
How can I open the file and retrieve the information?
Why don't keep using your current QB Desktop? It should be a one time license and you have nothing to loose. Anyway, utilize the trial period of the exporter tool

The previous treasurer is no longer a member of the group. As stated, that treasurer user their copy of Quickbooks, so the program is no longer available to the group.
OK, problem solved.
I don't find the website particularly user friendly, but I finally stumbled onto a page where I could download and install a 30 day trial od Quickbooks Desktop.
Did that, and got the backup data installed, and now just have to figure out how Quickbooks works.
Hello, @Anonymous.
You need to download and install your own copy of QuickBooks. Once completed, you can restore the back-up copy of your QuickBooks company file. From here, you'll be able to continue managing your QuickBooks account.
Here's how:
You can refer to this article for more detailed steps: Download QuickBooks Desktop.

Hello QuickBooks Team,
I am in the processing of selling my business. I have used Quickbooks for 22 years. The buyer is asking for access to my Quickbooks data file but I only want to provide access for the past 3 years since the data is sensitive and not necessary to show him 22 years of payroll, etc.
How can I extract all the transactions for the past 3 years into a separate data file?
Keith
Dear Quickbooks Team,
I'm interested in extracting the past 3 years of data from my Quickbooks files that contain data for the past 23 years. How can I extract the complete set of books covering the most recent 3 year period and omit the prior 20 years worth of data?
Thank you !!
Hello there, @briaudit.
You can run a report that suits your business and financial needs.
Here's how:
I've attached this article if you want to customize your report: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.
Keep me posted if you have any other questions. I'm always here to help however I can. Have a great day!
If you only need to present the report for the last 3 years operation, it would be easier to export it to XLS/PDF. But should you need to create a separate data file, utilize the 3rd party migration tool to do so.
