Owner's Contributions/Equity show as income

Thanks for reaching out to us, Lauren. I'd be glad to provide the necessary steps to handle an owner's contribution in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Based on your scenario, it seems that you have recorded your personal deposits to an incorrect account, which is why they appear as income in your profit and loss report.

To sort this out, you'll want to ensure you're affecting the equity account to track your capital investments properly. But before that, set yourself up as a vendor first to track your contributions. Once done, follow these steps to set up an equity account:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙, then select Chart of accounts.
  2. Click New.
  3. Pick Equity from the Account Type ▼ dropdown.
  4. From the Detail Type ▼ dropdown, choose Owner's Equity.
  5. Tap Save and Close.

Then, here's how to record your investment using bank deposits affecting the equity account:

  1. Click the + New button and tap Bank deposit.
  2. From the Account ▼ drop-down menu, pick the bank account into which you're depositing the money.
  3. Pick your vendor profile in the Received from field in the Add funds to this deposit section.
  4. Select the proper equity account from the drop-down list in the Account field and enter the investment amount in the Amount field.
  5. Complete the necessary fields, tap Save and close.

Regarding the deposits you've recorded, you can edit them and post them to the correct equity account and vendor profile. Also, if you've connected your bank account, you can match or categorize the transactions associated with your deposits.

After you record an investment, check out this article if you need to register payment for yourself, your partners, or co-owners later: Record paying back an investment.

Please let me know if you have other concerns or clarifications about recording the owner's contribution to your business. I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Have a great day!
