Paper size for check printing

The 9.1 update to QB for Mac 2024 has broken check printing. I can no longer print on check size paper. The update refuses to allow check printing on any size paper other than letter. I called Intuit about this. Nothing has been fixed. There is absolutely no reason to REMOVE this functionality from the software. Not sure what to do about it since Intuit typically does not listen to their customers. Anybody have a work around? Or a way to get Intuit to listen?????

And to now make matters CONSIDERABLY worse, this morning QBMac is crashing when I simply to try to print a check. I'm still running R8.1 in order to print checks onto check size paper, but this morning all of a sudden I can no longer do that. I deleted the app, copied from a backup and printed one check. But the next attempt to print a check QBMac crashed again. I'm a 25-year QB user but I am at wits end. I have to be able to print checks - Intuit is effectively removing that functionality from their software - it's insane.

Hello @lomontman , a new update was just released (R9.2) that has the ability to print a single check using the envelope feeder (or custom paper size).  When printing, if you choose the option for one check on 1st page, it will allow you to choose custom paper sizing options now.

Fantastic! Glad the engineers were able to fix this. Thanks for letting me know.

Updated to 9.2. Does not fix problem. After successufully printing a check on check-size paper, QB crashes trying to print to a single check.

Did you send in the crash log by any chance?  I'm wondering if there's anything in there that might give an indication as to what caused the crash.

Is Intuit ever going to fix this??????

Version 10.1 - still cannot print on check size paper.

I assume they've taken away this functionality forever. Appalling.

Thanks for following up with the Community, lomontman.

Since you're still unable to print on check sized paper, I'd recommend continuing to get in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

They can be reached while using QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Help, then QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  2. Use your Search questions, keywords, or topics field to enter a question or topic you need help with.
  3. Select Contact Us.

Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

I've also included a detailed resource about working with checks which may come in handy moving forward: Create, modify, & print checks

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a great Tuesday!

Is it still crashing when you try to print checks, or can you not choose to print single checks?  If it's crashing, did you send in the crash report for this?  Depending on which of the situations you are encountering, any details will help trying to find a solution for you.  The crash log can help narrow down specifics if there is one.

Not crashing. Simply cannot choose any paper size other than "Letter". I was told that this is because the program will crash if alternate paper sizes are allowed to be chosen, and the impression I got was a fix was being worked on. There have been a couple of updates since then though and no fix has occurred. I believe this is intentional to make QB Desktop Mac consistent with QB Online, which also will not allow check printing to any paper size other than Letter. And to sell Intuits "solution" to the problem, some kind of template for lack of a better word to which checks are attached.

Ok, the update that was released that allowed printing again with custom sized paper was for printing a single use check.  So on the Print Check window if you have 'Checks on 1st Page' set to 1 then you should be allowed to choose a custom paper size.  However, if you are choosing 3 checks to a page then it will require the Legal size paper for printing checks.

I will try that, thank you.

Yes that worked - for about 5 or 6 checks. Now QB is crashing again. No crash log is being generated. Utter garbage.

Do you have another computer you can access your company file from and try printing as well?  If not, does this system have another Mac OS User you can log in as and then open QuickBooks Mac and attempt printing?  I'm wondering if something has happened with the printing preferences, trying either of these options should generate a new printing preference and will let us know if that is the problem.

Loaded QBMac 2024 onto a MacBook Air and transferred my company file to that computer. I am able to print checks successfully. I've printed 5 or 6 times.

When I go back to 10.1 on my main computer, and bring up a print dialog and try to change settings in the dialog the program crashes. Earlier, I couldn't even get to a print dialog, the program would crash as soon as I went to File -> Print

So QB is not playing well with the printing software on my iMac. How does that get fixed?

And just to be clear - I'm running Monterey on the MacBook Air and Ventura on the iMac - print dialogs are different.

Issues like this can indicate software compatibility problems, corrupted settings, or issues with the printing software or drivers on your iMac, lomontman.

You can reset the printing system on your iMac. Sometimes corrupted print settings are responsible for crashing. Resetting the printing system may clear any problems. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu and System Settings, then click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar.
  2. Control-click the printer in the Printers list on the right, then choose Reset Printing System. Note: If no printers appear in the Printers list, you can Control-click the empty list and choose Reset Printing System.
  3. After you reset the printing system, the list of printers in Printers & Scanners settings is empty.
  4. Add the printer again.

On top of that, double-check if your current operating system is supported with your current iMac. However, if you’re still experiencing the same issue, I recommend contacting our support team so they can check why this is happening. Once you're on the page, choose QuickBooks for Mac and Continue. Follow the prompts so you'll get in touch with one of our support team.

If you have any other concerns or questions, let us know so we can get back to you. The Community team is always right here help.

Ok, it sounds like something happened to the printing preferences.  What you can try here is resetting this within QuickBooks.  Try bringing up a Check that you'd like to print, while the check is open on the screen hold down the following keys "Shift+Control+Option', with all 3 held down go to File and choose Print Check.  It should take just a split second but the print dialog window will open.  Then let go of the keys and try printing the check now.  This should reset the printing preferences for you and get QuickBooks back to a default printing state.

Nope. Didn't help. As soon as I change the paper size to check, QB crashes.

lomontman

Nope, doesn't help. Reset printing system. As soon as I try adding "check-size" paper QB crashes. Been a problem for a while now through a number of upgrades. Intuit needs to fix this so QBMac runs properly on an iMac running Ventura.
