Quick Books will not open after update.

I recently upgraded to QB Pro 2020 and have had no problems.  This morning I had an update for the program.  Now QB will not open.  Can someone please help me?  I have restarted my computer, but that did not help.  I know it had something to do with the update.  It was working fine last night when I turned it off.

Quick Books will not open after update.

Thank you for joining the QuickBooks Community, VickiL. That was a great idea to restart the computer to make sure there weren't any pending updates. Before proceeding, did you receive any error messages when you tried to open Quickbooks? In the meantime, I would recommend launching the Quickbooks Tool Hub. This tool will help fix company file issues, program issues or errors, and much more. Here's how:

  1. Close your Quickbooks Pro program.
  2. Download the recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub and save the file where it can easily be found.
  3. Once it downloads, open the file (QuickBooksToolHub.exe) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. You will see this icon displayed on your desktop, double click it.
  5. If you're not able to find it, use your Window Start Menu and search for it.
  6. Once that application launch, you could do one of these two things: If you are experiencing an error message when opening the company file. Select the Company File issue tab, then choose Quick Fix my file and the Quickbooks File Doctor. If you are having issues opening the program, use the Program Problem tab. I suggest selecting Quick Fix my Program.

Once the tool has finished running, opening back up Quickbooks to log in to your company file. For more information on fixing common problems and errors with the Quickbooks Desktop Tool Hub, this article would be very resourceful.

Keep me posted if you run into any more problems. I'll be on standby. If you have any more questions, feel free to reply below. The Community and I will do our best to help. Take care.

If you're encountering our "You do not have sufficient permissions to the specified folder" message when trying to access a company file, there's a list of things that could be causing it:

  • The file's located in a restricted location.
  • Folder permissions aren't set up properly.
  • The folder where your company file's stored is damaged.
  • The file's saved in a protected location, such as the root of C:// Drive or Program Files on a Windows Vista, 7 or 8.

Since there's a number of things that can cause this error to display, you'll want to check each possibility. Initially, I recommend downloading and installing a copy of our QuickBooks Tool Hub, then running QuickBooks File Doctor. Doing so can help fix common errors.

Next, try setting up QuickBooks to "Run as Administrator".

Here's how:

  1. Close your books, right-click the QuickBooks icon, then choose Properties.
  2. Access your Compatibility tab and tick Run this program as administrator.
  3. Press Apply.
  4. Select OK.

In the event our error's still displaying for you, move your company file to its default location:

  1. Close QuickBooks if it's open, then browse to the area where your file's stored.
  2. Right-click the QBW file and hit Copy.
  3. Access its default location (C://Users/Public/PublicDocuments/Intuit/QuickBooks/Company Files).
  4. Paste your clipboard into the folder.
  5. Try opening your file again.

If you continue encountering this message, you'll want to proceed with our additional troubleshooting steps.

I'll be here to help if there's any questions. Have an awesome day!
