Welcome to the Community, Sam 12701.

In QuickBooks Desktop, you can set up the preferences to remind you when the item exceeds quantity on hand or quantity available. It's possible the Warn if not enough if not enough inventory to sell option is enabled. You may turn it off by following the steps below:

  1. Go to Edit on the top menu.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Click Items & Inventory.
  4. Tap Company Preferences.
  5. Uncheck the Warn if not enough if not enough inventory to sell option.
  6. Press OK to save the changes.

When creating a transaction, this will not pop up if the item is less than the quantity on hand. These steps may or may not work since you are using an outdated version of QuickBooks Desktop. If you need to upgrade to the newest QuickBooks version, then the program has a 3-year life cycle. That means you have to convert your data file(s) in stages from 2013 to 2016 or 2019 until 2022. Here's an article you can refer to for more details about upgrading QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise

Appreciate the update, @Sam 12701. I'll help update your preference.

In QuickBooks Point of Sales, a warning message for out-of-stock items is configured as one of the reminders. You'll want to go to the Reminders menu from the Inventory tab and choose Reorder Items to perform the needed preferences.

thanks for the reply, but this doesn't answer my question.

under the INVENTORY tab and REMINDERS there is no option for me to set the system should warn me when "trying to sell any item that is currently out of stock"

i used to get a pop up msg saying "are you sure you want to add item to a sale? this item is currently out of stock"

this msg stopped coming. that is what i'm referring to.

please help

thank you!

Thanks for coming back, Sam 12701.

Inventory reminders help you track and manage your inventory by alerting you to situations that may need your attention. We can go to the Available tab to turn on these settings. Just go to Inventory on the top menu and choose Reminders. Select one of the available tabs and choose Reorder Items.

If the same thing happens, try repairing the software to fix any damaged components. Just follow the steps and details in this article: Repair QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale. The steps provided may or may not work since you're using an outdated QuickBooks Point of Sale version. These steps may or may not work since you are using an outdated version of QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale.
