Setting up a New, and restoring an old company on Desktop Version

Good day

 

I am a long time user of the Desktop version of QB.

My usage is on a personal level, and have no need for a costly monthly subscription.

I paid for, and rightly own my software, and think I should be able to use it as it was advertised.

 

Yesterday I wanted to set up a new company, but had to sign in for some reason.

I thought this suspicious, and decided to restore an old company and try it that way.

I then got a message prompting me to update to the latest version, but I didn't do that.

I was afraid if I updated, I would be locked out of my current Desktop companies, and forced to go to a monthly subscription, which I do not need, nor want.

The message also said that after the update, I would no longer be able to open older companies, or something along those lines.

 

My thinking was, if my Desktop QB is no longer supported, why would Intuit want me to update unless there was some ulterior motive to move me to the subscription.

 

So the bottom line is, can I safely set up a new company in my current Desktop version of QB.

Allow me to share some clarification about upgrading QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). 

 

When you upgrade to a newer version of QBDT, you'll need to purchase a new license or subscription. You'll need to install it on your computer and convert your company file.  First off, let's make sure to back up your company file and restore it to the new version of QBDT. 

 

Once you convert your file,  you will not be able to open it in an older version of QBDT.  

 

Yes, upgrading to the latest version of QBDT requires a subscription. This means that you pay a monthly or annual fee to access the software and receive updates and support.

R17 is the latest released version for QBD 2019. I believe you should not get any update notifications. Can you share screenshot(s)? Click the camera icon on the menu to insert the image here. Did you just reinstall your QBD 2019?

Well, son of a gun

It let me create a new company this time.

Weird.

 

I HAD three companies before I made the new one, which is the fourth company.

Now my list only shows three companies, and one of them is gone from the list.

Do you know how I can get four companies to show in the list?

I figured it out.

Not sure why it dropped it from the list, but I had to search for, and open the other company before it would show.

Yes, you can safely set up a new company file in your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2019, @bob_nj.

 

QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Windows 2019 was no longer supported starting last May 31, 2022. This includes QBDT Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions v19 in all versions. Since it is no longer supported, the prompt message for an update is just a reminder and a suggestion in case you want to experience the new features of QBDT. Still, you have the choice not to upgrade.

 

Although your version is no longer supported, you still can create a new company file. And to confirm, if you wish to upgrade, yes, you no longer have access to your older companies. Also, I'd like to mention that the reason why you're being prompted to sign in is to prioritize the security of your account. This is the new security protocol introduced to QBDT software users.

So, two questions, 

You said,  "if you wish to upgrade, yes, you no longer have access to your older companies."

What is an "Upgrade" exactly, and if I do, what happens to my old companies?

 

I ask that because you mention -->

in case you'd feel the need to upgrade to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop

I wouldn't mind paying and upgrading to the latest version of Desktop, but does this mean it has to be a subscription?

It looks like I will continue on with my Desktop version, as my needs don't require anything more.
